president’s message

What a year this has started out to be! Our reservoirs have replenished, for the most part, the hills are green, and the wildflow-ers are just starting to grow.

For some of us in construction, the rains have set us back a little, while at the same time generating more work. For others in maintenance, the rain and heat have kicked the weeds into gear. It seems as though everyone is busy. Thank goodness for all the rain. We really needed it.

Our chapter started the year off right with a great Kick-Off event at the end

of January. We had a good turnout of members, some wonderful food, and were entertained by a great band. We are hop-ing they can join us for our beautification awards. Thank you to David Wyche of Rainbird for sponsoring the event, CLCA Insurance Solutions for contributing to the beverage service, and to all of our sponsors who contributed to the raffle. Also, this was the first meeting where we were able to announce our 2017 Partners. Thank you to all the companies who have agreed to partner with us this year: Rainbird, Hunter/FX, Toro/Irritrol, Air-Vol Block, Purlieu Landscapes, St. Francis Landscaping, KD Janni Landscaping, Engel and Gray, Ewing Irrigation, and Bayer. Please support the firms who sup-port our chapter.

Thank you to our March dinner meet-ing sponsors Gentile & Associates and EZ Flo. And, thank you to Jonathan for cooking up a great spread of tacos! It was nice to get everyone together for a very informative and timely dinner meeting.

The chapter is planning a State Water Board Panel Discussion at our meeting in May. This will be a great opportunity for landscapers and the public alike to learn about upcoming changes to water restric-

tions in our area and at the state level. This event will be open to all, including the public. Watch your email and this publication for more information coming shortly.

Our annual Beautification Awards event is coming! Start thinking about which projects you would like to enter, and look for the application coming soon. Judging will take place in May, and the awards banquet will be held in June. This is our biggest event of the year, and I encourage everyone to get involved. It will be at a new venue this year--Price Barn, 510 W Ormonde Rd. in San Luis Obispo--so plan to attend. This will be a great change in the event. This is always a well attended event and a great opportunity to mingle with your competition and local suppliers. It's also a fantastic way to view some of the best landscaping being done in our area. We hope to see you all there whether or not you enter a project.

One final thing... LEAF scholarship applications are due April 15, 2017. If you are a student or know a student studying horticulture, please let them know about these scholarship opportunities. See page 4 of this issue for more information.

Because every year the number of stu-dents needing financial assistance grows, the California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) developed a schol-arship foundation, the Landscape Educational Advancement Foundation (LEAF), to help students pursuing a career in horticulture.

The CLCA is pleased to announce that the application for 2017 LEAF scholarships is now available online at http://www.clca.org/clca/downloads/leafapp.pdf .

LEAF is here to help!Since 1972, the California Landscape Contractors Association's Auxiliary has offered scholarships to college and uni-versity students majoring in landscape-re-lated programs. In 1988, the Landscape Educational Advancement Foundation (LEAF) was formed to carry on the tradi-tion of awarding financial aid to deserv-ing students.

Any student attending an accredited California community college or state university majoring in a landscape-related program and taking a minimum of six units is eligible.

Please help us spread the word by let-ting students know of this opportunity.

The application deadline is April 15, 2017Applications are available online at clca.org/clca/downloads/leafapp.pdf

For LEAF scholarship posters or more information about LEAF, please visit the website or email [email protected]. Recent Cal Poly Recipients Bresa Martin is a freshman at Cal Poly SLO majoring in Agricultural and Environmental Plant Science. She hopes to be actively involved in landscape design, independently or with a firm.

Jessica Sheets is a junior at Cal Poly SLO majoring in Agricultural and Environmental Plant Science. She would like to work with a firm that specializes in environmentally sound practices focusing on water conservation and xeriscape.

Jackie Wang is a junior at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo majoring in Agricultural and Environmental Plant Science. She hopes to work in public horticulture in design, construction and maintenance.

Yes, the rain has been a welcome experi-ence this winter. However, with the abun-dant rain fall, what will be next? Weeds! The most effective and efficient way to control weeds in the landscape is with properly timed applications of pre-emer-gent herbicides. Acting like an invisible barrier below the surface, pre-emergent applications prevent weed seeds from sprouting and pushing through the soil surface. With continued control, with spring and fall applications, weeds can be a thing of the past. Timing is critical with pre-emergents since they do not control existing weeds. Applications must be made prior to seed germination. Mid-March is an ideal time for most areas. The length of control var-ies depending on the product, but may be from four to nine months. To save time, choose a combination fertilizer/pre-emergent product. It is suggested to use a slower release nitrogen formula which provides a greater applica-tion window.

Summer BulbsIt’s not too late to plant summer bulbs. Surprise your customers with a burst of color provided by the little packages of petals. Dahlias, Begonias, Gladiolas, Ranunculus, and more are still available for planting. Installing bedding plants or landscape shrubs? Throw some bulbs in under the plant material for a wonderful summer surprise!Got Leaf Curl?“My fruit tree has leaf curl.” Most of us have heard this before. The question is what kind of leaf curl? Is it on peaches? Or on a cherry tree? On citrus? Leaf curl is caused by many different factors. Insects and diseases can cause leaf distortions in-cluding scarring that can appear as some kind of damage even though the pest may be gone. • Peach Leaf Curl is a common disease

affecting peaches and nectarines. Using a liquid copper spray is ideal for this disease. The secret is timing. Spraying at bud stage and again just after the blos-

soms start to fall will increase success in controlling this disease. If any leaves do appear damaged, simply pluck off the worst of the damage since the fruit is unaffected.

• Cherries: Curled leaves on cherries is usually the result of Black Cherry Aphids. Spraying when the new growth is emerging with Horticulture Oil can reduce the severity of the damage.

• Citrus are prone to scale which secretes honeydew and causes black mold to form on leaves. In addition, ants and aphids are attracted to the sweet nectar. Reducing or eliminating the scale can reduce leaf curl damage and the unat-tractive mold. Horticultural oil can help with this pesky insect. Put a sticky ring around the trunk to prevent ants from climbing into the tree.

Lien Paperwork

Purlieu Landscape is an awards win-ning landscape design + build company that builds relationships with its cli-ents through a unique creative process. This creative process involves the client throughout the entire development of the landscape. From the initial design consul-tation, to the completed construction, and to years down the road, we desire to give our clients a complete package of service and love.

Our mission is to design and build ed-ible and ornamental landscapes without putting additional strain on any site’s po-

table water system. We assess, design and install rainwater harvesting systems that meet or exceed the landscape's annual water use. The rainfall received on the site from the past year’s rainy season acts as that water source. This process eliminates the need for potable water and helps sus-tain a healthy garden for years to come.

Purlieu Landscape's general manager Taylor Boyle has served on the CLCA San Luis Obispo chapter board of directors as the VP of Membership and Public Relations since 2016.
