DESCRIPTION

Casa San Pablo clay storytellers are terracotta narrative figures hand-pinched and hand-painted by San Pablo clay artisan and Casa San Pablo innkeeper An Mercado-Alcantara. The art of creating storyteller dolls was pioneered by Cochiti Pueblo potter Helen Cordero in 1964 and later popularized by succeeding Native American Indians. Inspired by the craft, Alcantara’s folksy storytellers pay tribute both to the rich Filipino pottery and storytelling traditions. It is not surprising that some of her works would include figurative clay caricatures of Maria Clara and Severino Reyes’ iconic Lola Basyang, effectively presenting a successful transport and fusion of original Cochiti pottery culture into the local brand of representational art. Flip through these pages to choose from our latest clay storyteller creations.

A painting of Our Lady of Sorrows was once washed ashore on Laguna de Bay but was too heavy to carry. Only when people began to sing, could they lift the image. Then they danced as well, twirling and swaying in a frenzy, prodding the Spanish friars to call them “turumba,” meaning crazed or insane. The Turumba Festival is held in Pakil, Laguna, up to this day.

This tablet captures a childhood memory: when once our family was in crisis, our grandmother called her grandchildren around her, brought out a huge rosary and asked them to pray with her. The Lady asked Juan Diego to gather Castilian roses from a snow-covered hill. “Impossible,” he must have thought. But there they were in full bloom. He gathered them in his tilma (cloak) and rushed to tell the bishop his story. Opening the tilma, he let the flowers fall out. But it wasn’t the beautiful roses that caused the bishop to fall to his knees; for there, on the tilma, was a picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary precisely as Juan had described her.

“All we have is the story we tell. Everything we do, every decision we make, our strength, weakness, motivation, history, and character—what we believe—none of it is real; it’s all part of the story we tell. But here’s the thing: it’s our goddamned story!” — Jess Walter, Beautiful Ruins
