Claveria got its name after Governor General Narciso Claveria and was foundedin March 9, 1865. It lies on the north western part of Cagayan; it is bounded on thenorth by the Babuyan Channel, east by Sanchez Mira, south by Apayao Province andwest by Sta. Praxedes. A fast developing community. It is promoted as the Paradise ofthe North by local tourism industry
The splendors of the beautiful and fast growing town of Claveria can be tracedfrom its first settlers and some of their roots, who most of them were from the towns ofPasuquin and Vintar in the Province of Ilocos Norte. They blazed their trail north-eastward and crossed the Caraballo Mountain Ranges (popularly known to travelers asCalvario because of the dangers posed by its winding, precipitous and muddy roads) inthe quest for better life and greener pasture. The first settlers settled in a vast area ofthe forest situated beside a river full of fishes and lilies which they called bakungs. Theyfirst called the settlement as “Kabakungan” which means, where the bakungs are, untilfor obvious reasons, the place was renamed as Cabicungan.
