T he opening reception will take place Saturday, April 4 from 7 to 10pm, with the show running through May 3, 2015. The artist will be in attendance at the opening reception. HAUTE FAUXX will be on view on view April 4 through May 3, 2015 at Ro2 Art DOWNTOWN, located at 110 N. Akard Street, between Main and Elm. STATEMENT: HAUTE FAUXX In recent years, Jesse Meraz has worked on various series of art works addressing a wide range of cultural and social issues relative to consumerism, sub-cultures, and sexuality. In his up-coming solo exhibition, HAUTE FAUXX, Meraz explores the seductive methods that Fashion uses to lure and convince people that they are a cut above the mainstream, if they obtain highly coveted “status” offerings. Fashion’s brand-scape and savvy marketing exploit people’s self-identity, the sensitivity of their feelings and desires. Fashion brings to light, perhaps, people’s lack of any real comprehension of the breadth and depth of their vulnerability. Meraz’s interests lie in the ambivalent relationship between art and fashion. The artist shares his visual perspective on the cultural phenomenon of the gap from perception to reality in the human pursuit of power, status, and the desire to be popular. HAUTE FAUXX is a collection of “displays” that employ the trappings of falsehoods, fantasy, and enchantments to address the Fashion industry’s empty promises but more importantly, the consumer’s attraction to “prestige” goods, fabricated truth and glossy lifestyles.
