Classroom Management
Teacher's action which leads to the creation of a learning environment where positive interpersonal interaction is promoted and effective learning is facilitated (Hue Ming.T & Li Wai.S, 2008).
The teacher's ability to cooperatively manage time, space resources, student roles, student behavior to provide a climate that encourages learning (Alberto & Troutman, 1986).
"Classroom management is about creating the right conditions for effective learning - whichever method you use, whatever your classroom is like and whoever your students are Tom Scrivener
Which roles does a teacher use?
PLANNER- prepares and thinks through the lesson in detail before teaching it.
INFORMER- gives the learners detailed information about the language or about an activity.
MANAGER- organizes the learning space, makes sure everything in the classroom is running smoothly and sets up rules and routines.
MONITOR- goes around the class during individual, pair and group work activities, checking learning.
More teacher roles
INVOLVER: makes sure all the learners are taking part in the activities.
PARENT/FRIEND: comforts learners when they are upset or unhappy
DIAGNOSTICIAN: is able to recognize the cause of learners difficulties.
In your opinion which role is the most important?
The teacher
Your style of teaching will depend on the sort of person you are
Roger Gower & Steve Walters, 1983
Keep eye contact
To help establish rapport
To indicate to a student that you want to talk to him or you want him to do something
To hold the attention of students not being addressed
To take the place of naming students
To notice the students reactions
Presentation of new language
To check that everyone is concentrating
To maintain attention
To keep in touch with other students when you are dealing with an individual
To encourage contributions
To check that the students understand
Controlled practice
To indicate who is to speak
To ensure that students have understood
To signal to a pair or group to start, to stop or to hurry up
To indicate with an accompanying gesture that groups are on the right or wrong lines
Use of gesture and facial expression
Gestures and facial expression are an integral part
of any communication where people listen and speak
to each other. They help us get across what we want
to say. It is often recommendable to exaggerate
your gestures a little.
Teachers position and movement
What type of activity it is
What your role is
What the students role is expected to be
Who you are attending to and not attending to
Wheather you expect a student to talk to you or not
Activities with the teacher
in the front of the class
You can see what everyone is doing or trying to say
You can maintain control through gesture and eye contact
The students can see any visual aids or mimes you may need
You are mobile enough to help and correct individuals
The students can focus on you
Be careful not to
Be totally frozen out there in front.
Move around too much.
Develop habits like rocking backwards and forwards from one foot to the other.
Sitting arrangement
How the seats are arranged depends on the size of the class, the size of the group, the type of activity and the style of the furniture.
A) rows
