Classroom Highlights 8th Grade Highlights The class has immersed itself in the study of algebra, physical science, grammar, liter- ature, Bible, civics, and a number of electives. The guys and girls have separate classes for Bible. After laying a founda- tion in civics, they will delve into a study of the electoral process and this year's platforms. They eagerly await a field trip to Gettysburg, a visit to criminal court, a tour of our state capitol, and the high ropes course at Black Rock Retreat Center which will all occur within their eighth grade year. They are currently planning mission opportunities for the year as well. Many of them look forward to attending The Academy at WFCS for high school. 7th Grade Highlights Seventh graders are laying a foundation in English grammar, enjoy introductory Spanish twice a week, and will be completing studies of The Hobbit and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. They are exploring the themes of geography including movement, human environment, interaction & place. In science, the class is learning about organisms at the cellular level. They will present a “cell model pizza” as part of their project for learning about the activities that occur inside the cells of an organism. Pre-algebra is reviewing math concepts. The class is looking forward to the Gettysburg field trip with the eighth grade in the Fall. 6th Grade Highlights We are blessed this year to have seen a dramatic increase in the number of sixth graders with a total of twenty-eight! This led to the board’s approval to create two classes/homerooms for the sixth grade. Mrs. Julie Bales was hired full-time and is teaching math and literature. Mrs. Kim Smith continues to teach science. With the change in the schedule, introduction to Spanish, study skills and personal finance classes have also been added. In math class, the students are studying variables, algebraic expressions, and properties. They practice multiples daily, while learning to juggle! In science, the class is learning about the Earth’s surface through the study of maps. They were challenged to create a collage of the fourteen commonly used terms in social studies called the “general knows”. In language, the students are writing chil- dren's fiction stories using graphic organizers to ensure the inclusion of every essential element of fiction literature. They are also studying John Bunyan and his famous piece of literature, Pilgrim's Progress. 5th Grade Highlights Fifth graders are so enthusiastic about the start of school. Bible class finds us memo- rizing the Word of God, studying creation of the world, and preparing for our October 5 chapel. Our service project for the year involves reaching out to encourage a local cancer patient. This group has a passion for helping others. 4th Grade Highlights It is awesome to start each school day off with time in prayer and praise with our Heavenly Father. We have been studying the book of Samuel and learning more about God through our daily devotions. In science, we are learning how animals are grouped (those with a backbone and those without). During math, the students are busy using manipulatives to represent number and shape patterns. In reading, we've been practicing fluency and comprehension. We've also been busy creating compound sentences and sort- ing words with the "long e" pattern. We are excited to see what God will do in our classroom this year! 3rd Grade Highlights Third graders are eager to learn new things and have plenty of energy each day. We completed a unit on The Chocolate Touch and enjoyed tasting some new things. We are learning about the communities around us today and long ago and are looking forward to visiting Great Valley Na- ture Center in October to learn about the ways the Native Americans lived. We rejoice over God's protec- tion of His people in the Old Testament and are thankful He continues to protect us today. 2nd Grade Highlights Family pets are very special to second graders. We enjoyed reading about pets and bringing in pictures to accompany the short stories we wrote about our pets. Some of our pets even came in for a visit! We also had fun presenting our Short Vowel Sound Parade with each student choosing a vowel sound, carrying props to represent it, and then having the elementary classes try to guess our vowels. Later this month we will assemble school kits for our Bible class mission project which Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will distribute to students in poorly funded schools around the world. 1st Grade Highlights Students are busy as bees as they adjust to first grade routines. We memorized Luke 6:31 "Do to others as you would have them do to you", and are doing our best to show respect to our friends, teachers, and fami- ly. We have learned what it means to be a good citizen in social studies. Our reading theme is “Animals, Tame and Wild”. We will correlate this with a science unit on animals. The students will complete an animal poster to teach their friends about a favorite animal. We are looking forward to a field trip to Landis Valley Museum with 2nd grade in October . Kindergarten Highlights We have 18 new friends and are excited to learn and grow together each day! We are experiencing many school activities and routines as we learn to show respect, share and take turns, walk in a line and raise our hands when we want to share our thoughts and ideas. We are practicing many skills such as drawing, cutting and writ- ing. We are reviewing the letters of the alphabet and beginning to read sight words. In reading, we are listening to stories about how people live, work, and play together in our families and in our communities. In math, we are counting and writing numbers 0 to 5. We especially enjoy digging our hands into learning with a variety of projects like cooking, play dough, glue, sensory, and so much more! We share God’s word each day and know that God made us, God loves us and Jesus wants to be our friend forever! We are all children of God, created in His image and are memorizing our first Bible verse together to help us remember that; "I will praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Psalm 139:14
