Two bodies had a partnership for a decade: ClassNK began usingNAPA software in 2005; the soceity & the company developedClassNK NAPA Manager in 2008; they both commenced thedevelopment of new interface for NAPA Steel & PrimeShip-HULL in 2011; they again began development of ClassNK-NAPAGREEN in 2012 and ClassNK acquires NAPA Group in 2014.

ClassNK states that its goal is not to generate greater profits,but to ensure safety, protect the environment, and contribute tothe development of the global maritime industry. By workingwith NAPA, the soceity can directly help develop and implementa wider variety of software solutions to support ship designers,yards, and operators around the world.

It is declared that designers should be free to choose what toolsthey use, and shipyards will not be forced to use NAPA or anyother software and NAPA will remain independent from ClassNKand will continue to supply services for any class society vesselsjust as before the acquisition.

NAPA will continue to develop its product lines independently asit always has - based on the needs & feedback of its clients andusers; ei class societies, ship designers, shipyards andshipowners. ClassNK will help increase the feedback process, andwhere possible provide direct support NAPA’s continueddevelopment activities. But where necessary, strict lines ofgovernance and firewalls will be established in order to ensureconfidentiality. Both bodies have worked together for many yearson various projects with multiple clients and have maintained,and will continue to maintain, the highest standards ofgovernance in protecting data.

Aweaker yen and an expanding economy mean thatJapan's maritime industries are now booming. In 2013,Japanese shipbuilders scooped up a massive 83 million

tonnes of new building orders for 1,900 vessels. Meanwhile,Japanese shipyards and marine equipment manufacturers leadthe world in advanced “eco-ship” technologies. Therefore;International Maritime Exhibition & Conference Sea Japan2014 was an attractive event for the industry.

During the exhibition, the Japanese classification societyClassNK organised a press conference to announce theacquisition NAPA Group. The society has an extensive globalinfrastructure in order to provide classification services to a fleetof more than 8,500 vessels, 1800 owners & 130 shipyardsaround the world. By working with NAPA, it aims to provideeven better design and operational services to owners andshipyards around the world.

Today, more than 90% of the world’s newbuildings are built byyards that use NAPA software in their initial design process. Itis assumed that NAPA is the world’s de facto standard fordesign support tools.

As regulations have become more rational and ship design hasbecome more complex, software tools have become essential tohelp designers carry out the vessel design process. Both ClassNKand NAPA have worked for decades to develop and provide suchtools to the industry.

The leading event in the Japanese maritime calender, Sea Japan 2014, took place in Tokyo on 9-11 April.

The latest technology in advanced maritime and new products were presented and the visitors tried to find

new business opportunities. During the event ClassNK held a press conference to announce the details of its

acquisition of NAPA Group.

THE NEXT GENERATION OF SHIP DESIGN SUPPORT

Today, ship design remains a tremendously complex and time

consuming process. NAPA has already developed NAPA STEEL,

which has the potential greatly increase the efficiency of ship

design. By working together, it is hoped to improve NAPA

STEEL’s functionality & usability and make it the world’s most

effective ship design solution. The existing ship design method

takes approximately 8,000 hours for 2D design + 3D modeling

whereas ship design with NAPA STEEL takes approximately

3,000 hours for 3D design & modeling.

Ship operations is becoming ever more technically advanced, and

shipowners are demanding a new range of software tools to help

meet the requirements of new conventions and to improve fuel

efficiency. It was to meet those growing needs that both decided

to collaborate to develop ClassNK-NAPA GREEN. By working

together they aim to make the product the most accurate & most

effective ship operations software available.
