LOCAL Henry County The�Voice�of �Henry�County�Since�1876 the finals and a 3-0 win over Williamstown in the regional tournament. That was nine straight sets of some of the best volleyball the team played all year. Better late than never, Lady Cats. The Henry County Wildcats golf team was denied a deserved oppor- tunity to go to the state tournament this year because of a rule change that went into effect before the season. The KHSAA decided that only one team per region would qualify for state for the first time, while adding a few more indi- vidual qualifying spots. The Wildcats finished a close third last year when two teams quali- fied. This year it seemed cruel that they finished runner-up in the region and still failed to make it as a team. However, Alex Hadden and Isaac Klempner, the team leaders since they were in middle school, qualified for state again. As for the team, they won multiple tourna- ments throughout the season and finished one spot short of qualifying for the new Kentucky Golf Coaches Association All-State Invitational Tournament, which was for the top 15 ranked teams in the state. The Henry County Lady Cats soccer team had an up and down season but they came together at the right time to win the 31 st District tournament with wins over Carroll County and their arch-nemesis, Owen County. The Lady Cats lost twice to Owen County in the regular season only to come back and beat the Lady Rebels 5-2 in the district final to earn a trip to the regional tourna- ment. The exciting thing about this team is that most of the starters are back next year. The Eminence Warriors volleyball team started the season strong but had some dev- astating injuries late in the season that almost ruined their season. The Warriors lost senior Madison Sweeney for a big chunk of the second half of the season when she went down with an ankle injury. Sweeney is one of the top hitters in the Eighth Region. Her younger sister Megan Sweeney then went down with a broken hand right before the dis- trict tournament. Megan Sweeney was one of the best all-around players for the Warriors this sea- son. Before these injuries the Warriors were 7-1 in district play and earned the top seed in the tour- nament. Madison came back for the district tourna- ment at about 50 percent strength according to her father and coach Ed Sweeney. She helped lead the Warriors to a victory over Gallatin County, which saw the Warriors qualify for region. But without Megan and without Madison at full strength, the Warriors failed to bring home the district title when they faced Henry County in the final. Madison Sweeney and Faithe Axline were the only seniors on this team so expect big things in the future from the Warriors. The Henry County Cross Country team had four runners qualify for state this year. Juniors Keegan Kurtz and Jackson Fischer went for the boys. Both have been to state before. On the girls’ side, Freshman Meg Golden and seventh-grader Akacia Kurtz made their first appearance on the big stage. That bodes well for the future of the program, if the Lady Cats can find some more girls to round out the squad. MORE FROM PAGE A10 Swim teams open season EHS, HCHS swim in Autumn Classic BY GREG WOODS [email protected] The Henry County Wildcats and Eminence Warriors swim teams opened their seasons at the Clear Creek Family Activity Center in Shelbyville in the Autumn Classic. Nine teams participated in the meet. Henry County’s girls finished sixth and the Warriors girls finished eighth. The Wildcat boys also finished sixth and the Warriors boys also fin- ished eighth. Bo Kasten led the Wildcats with a third place finish in the 100- yard butterfly and third place finish in 200-yard individual medley. William Clements had a third place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. For the Warriors Rachel Lynn had two top-eight finishes in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle races. Harrison Gilbert took ninth place in the 200-yard individu- al medley. “The relays kept Henry County competitive in the meet,” Tom Coons said. Coons coaches several of the teams at the meet including Henry County and Eminence. “Everyone contrib- uted to Henry County’s team score,” Coons said. “Considering they are in just their second year with a coach, they are still building and developing. “We had 72 percent best times at the beginning of the season. It is a great way to start the season.” Coons also sees prom- ise in the Warriors’ young program. “Eminence continues to improve,” he said. Each person that swam over the weekend helped with the overall total points. It is a good feel- ing that all contributed to their success. Better late than never, Lady Cats.

The Henry County Wildcats golf team was denied a deserved oppor-tunity to go to the state tournament this year because of a rule change that went into effect before the season. The KHSAA decided that only one team per region would qualify for state for the first time, while adding a few more indi-vidual qualifying spots.

The Wildcats finished

a close third last year when two teams quali-fied. This year it seemed cruel that they finished runner-up in the region and still failed to make it as a team.

However, Alex Hadden and Isaac Klempner, the team leaders since they were in middle school, qualified for state again.

As for the team, they won multiple tourna-ments throughout the season and finished one spot short of qualifying for the new Kentucky Golf Coaches Association All-State Invitational Tournament, which was for the top 15 ranked teams in the state.

The Henry County Lady Cats soccer team had an up and down season but they came together at the right time to win the 31st District

tournament with wins over Carroll County and their arch-nemesis, Owen County.

The Lady Cats lost twice to Owen County in the regular season only to come back and beat the Lady Rebels 5-2 in the district final to earn a trip to the regional tourna-ment.

The exciting thing about this team is that most of the starters are back next year.

The Eminence Warriors volleyball team started the season strong but had some dev-astating injuries latein the season that almost ruined their season.

The Warriors lost senior Madison Sweeney for a big chunk of the second half of the season when she went down with an ankle injury. Sweeney is one of the top hitters in the Eighth Region.

Her younger sister Megan Sweeney then went down with a broken hand right before the dis-trict tournament. Megan Sweeney was one of the best all-around players for the Warriors this sea-son.

Before these injuries the Warriors were 7-1 in district play and earned the top seed in the tour-nament.

Madison came back for the district tourna-ment at about 50 percent strength according to her father and coach Ed Sweeney.

She helped lead the Warriors to a victory over Gallatin County, which saw the Warriors qualify for region. But without Megan and without Madison at full strength, the Warriors failed to bring home the district title when they faced Henry County in the final.

Madison Sweeney and Faithe Axline were the only seniors on this team so expect big things in the future from the Warriors.

The Henry County Cross Country team had four runners qualify for state this year.

Juniors Keegan Kurtz and Jackson Fischer went for the boys. Both have been to state before.

On the girls’ side, Freshman Meg Golden and seventh-grader Akacia Kurtz made their first appearance on the big stage.

That bodes well for the future of the program, if the Lady Cats can find some more girls to round out the squad.

Swim teams open seasonEHS, HCHS swim in

The Henry County Wildcats and Eminence Warriors swim teams opened their seasons at the Clear Creek Family Activity Center in Shelbyville in the Autumn Classic. Nine teams participated in the meet.

Henry County’s girls finished sixth and the Warriors girls finished eighth.

The Wildcat boys also finished sixth and the Warriors boys also fin-ished eighth.

Bo Kasten led the Wildcats with a third place finish in the 100-yard butterfly and third place finish in 200-yard individual medley.

William Clements had a third place finish in the 200-yard freestyle.

For the Warriors Rachel Lynn had two top-eight finishes in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle races. Harrison Gilbert took ninth place in the 200-yard individu-al medley.

“The relays kept Henry County competitive in the meet,” Tom Coons said.

Coons coaches several of the teams at the meet

including Henry County and Eminence.

“Everyone contrib-uted to Henry County’s team score,” Coons said. “Considering they are in just their second year with a coach, they are still building and developing. “We had 72 percent best times at the beginning of the season. It is a great way to start the season.”

Coons also sees prom-ise in the Warriors’ young program.

“Eminence continues to improve,” he said. Each person that swam over the weekend helped with the overall total points. It is a good feel-ing that all contributed to their success. We have a lot to learn and lots of room to grow.”
