Classifieds Basketball is always the topic of conversation in March. This year, basketball is also a hot topic at the New Albany Animal Shelter along with kitten season. Soon, the shelter will be overrun with moms and babies. While the shelter does not euthanize due to space, it can easily become crowded and overwhelming for these already stressed animals. Stressed mothers can have a harder time keeping their little ones healthy while they grow. To help promote adoptions and reduce over crowding, the Shelter is embracing basketball madness and holding our Feline Frenzy, Shooting for Savings Promotion. This promotion will be held March 15-31st, 2013. For every cat (over 4lbs) adoption, adopters will get one chance to shoot a basket and receive half off of their adoption fee! All cats are spayed/neutered, microchipped, Felv/FIV tested negative, and current on yearly vaccinations. Some of these cats have already been waiting for many months for their forever home. These sponsored adoption fees are made possible by the Floyd County Animal Rescue League. Come see what all the hoopla is about at the Shelter and meet our furry friends who need a home. Shoot for a winning cause! Do You Have What It Takes?

Traveling Comfortably With Your Pets

Spring Break isjust around the corner. Manyfamilies take this opportunityto go on a vacation to escapethe stress of work and school, even if just for a week. Hereare some tips to help keep thestress levels to a minimumwhen traveling with your pets.

Your dog willneed a veterinary examinationand appropriatedocumentation to travel withyou. The law requires thatdogs going state to state –whether by car or airplane –travel with two documentsfrom a veterinarian: a healthcertificate and a certificate ofrabies vaccination. While atthe vets office, make sure all ofyour personal information iscorrect and the veterinarianhas an alternate phonenumber.

Make sure IDtags and microchip informationare up-to-date. Include yourpermanent address andtelephone number, emergencycontacts and cell phonenumbers. ID tags andmicrochips are useless if yourcontact information is not up-to-date and accurate.

Having a recent, clear picture of your animalcan help if the animal were toget lost. People are morelikely to recognize an animalafter seeing a picture.

Always keep acontainer of water handy with

you on all trips.Make sure the wateris kept clean andcool. As you drive, add water little bylittle to the waterbrought from home. This gradual mixingcan help dogs adjustto different water, important if theyhave easily upsetstomachs.

Use seatbelts tofasten carriers to the seat. Acrate won’t help in an accidentif it’s just sitting on the backseat. If you don’t use travelcarriers, use a restrainingharness. Dogs, like humans, can get thrown around in anaccident if not belted in.

Stopping everyfew hours is good for you andyour dog. It gives both fo youtime to stretch. It will alsogive your dog time toeliminate, have some water, burn off some energy, andloosen his muscles. Avoidleaving animals in the car unattended. The temperaturecan rise to 120 degree F in amatter of minutes, even withthe windows cracked open.Rotate who goes away fromthe car to make sure there isalways someone there with thedog.

If your familyplans on flying, make sure youtriple check all of therequirements needed for yourpet to board the plane. Allairlines are different in whatthey allow. Carrier types andsizes can be a huge issue inregards to how the pet will beflying - as a carry on or belowthe plane. Allow plenty of timebefore your flight in case anycomplications with your petarise. Seasonal temperaturesin baggage compartments ofplanes must be considered aswell.

If your pet hasanxiety issues, you may wantto talk to your vet prior to yourtrip for suggestions on keepingthem calm. In severe cases, medications may need to beadministered in advance.

Lodging whentraveling with pets can be verycomplicated. Doing yourhomework on pet friendlylodging can really pay off.Book rooms before leavinghome and confirm them fromon the road. Lists of dog-friendly travel lodges areavailable atwww.petswelcome.com andwww.travelpets.com Keep yourdog leashed when you exit andre-enter a hotel room. Even ifthe hotel is dog-friendly, not allthe guests may be. Becourteous to the hotel staff andguest. Introduce your pet tothe neighboring rooms andstaff, to help make everyonecomfortable. Pick up after yourdog, bring a sheet if your dogsleeps on the bed, groom dogsthat shed, and wipe paws onmuddy days. Make sure yourdog isn’t the reason a hotelmay change dog-friendlypolicies.

Don’t leave dogsalone in hotel rooms. If youmust, crate them with afavorite toy or treat that willkeep them entertained untilyou come back. Receivingcomplaints of your dog barkingor being destructive will not bean enjoyable part of your trip. Also ask about local pet daycare businesses or dog walkersif you must leave your dog foran extended period of time.

Plan ahead forsuccess later. Take the time topack carefully, get thenecessary documents and IDtags, and arrange dog-friendlyaccommodations. You – andyour dog – will be glad you did.

Standing Up For What's Right

Humane LobbyDay is an event sponsored byThe Humane Society of theUnited States where citizenanimal advocates like you gatherto learn and practice lobbyingfor animal protection laws at thestate level.

Typically, there area few topics in particular that

are focused on. This years topicsare spay and neuter programsfor low income families, and the"whistle blower" bill.Government funded spay/neuterprograms are important for anycommunity. Stray animals caneasily over an area very quickly. Many families can care for ananimals daily needs, but costlysurgeries may be out of theirreach. With governmentassistance, these families will beable to get their animals altered, improving the pets health andquality of life. Fewer stray andferal animals also reduces theanimals in shelters.

The whistle blower

bill will make undercoverinvestigations on farms a felonyif passed. Many animals onfarms may be mistreated by theirconfinements and how they arehandled or worked with. Farmproperty is also usually wherepuppy mills are located. Withoutbeing able to do undercoverinvestigations, these animalsmay not have a chance to get outof these environments.

We will beattending Humane Lobby Day inIndianapolis this year to talk togovernment Representatives andpush for more humane treatmentfor animals! We'd love to see youthere!
