Go through chapter-5 Lines and angles.
DAY – 1
1. Fill in the blanks:
(i) Two angles forming linear pair are ………………
(ii) If two lines intersect at a point, then the vertically opposite angles are always …….
(iii) If two lines intersect at a point, and if one pair of vertically opposite angle are acute then other pair
of vertically opposite angles are…………..
2. Answer the following:
(i) Can two acute angles forms linear pair?
(ii) Can two right angles form linear pair?
(iii) Can an acute angle be adjacent to an obtuse angle?
3. Define Adjacent angle with figure.
DAY – 2
4. Give two examples of vertically opposite angles in your surroundings.
5. In the given figure write: E D
(i) Five pairs of adjacent angles.
(ii) Four pairs of linear pair of angles.
(iii) Two pairs of Vertically
Opposite angles.
A O B
C
6. Give two examples of linear pair of angles.
DAY- 3
7. Solve the following as done in example:
Example: C D
If ∠AOC = 35° , Find other angles.
(2x+1)°
Solution: x°
A O B
Since ∠AOC, ∠BOD and ∠COD forms straight angle.
Therefore ∠AOC + ∠COD +∠BOD = 180°
i.e. 35° + (2x+1)° +x° = 180°
i.e. 35° + 2x° +1°+x° =180°
i.e. 3x° + 36° = 180°
i.e. 3x° = 180° - 36°
i.e. 3x° = 144°
i.e. x° = 144° ÷ 3
i.e. x° = 48°
Hence ∠BOD = x°= 48° and∠COD = (2x +1) ° = (2 x 48 +1) = (96+1) = 97°
Now solve the following:
(i) If ∠AOC = 47°, find ∠BOC. C
A O B
(ii) If ∠POR= 40° and ∠QOS = 25° , find ∠ROS.
R S
P O Q
(iii) If ∠XOZ = 112° , Find ∠YOZ.
Z
X O Y
8. In the given figure ∠ABC and ∠BCD are adjacent angles. Give reason. A B
C D
DAY – 4
9. In the adjoining figure:
(i) Is ∠1 adjacent to ∠2?
(ii) Is ∠1 adjacent to ∠3?
(iii) Is ∠1 vertically opposite to ∠4? 1
(iv) Is ∠1 and ∠5 forms a linear pair? 5 2
4 3
10. Find examples from your surroundings where lines intersect at right angles.
11. If two lines intersect, do they always intersect at right angles? If not, give examples.
DAY – 5
12. Solve and find the missing angles :
(i) A B (ii) M P
x° (x+1)°
55°O y° (2x + 5)°
z°
C D Q N

Some important topics
The word democracy is derived from the Greek word Demos and Kratia which means
rule of the people. Democracy is therefore any system of government where people have
a choice to choose their representatives.
How did democracy originate : Democracy existed in ancient Greek city States .They
believed that all males should take part in the process of decision making .Slaves and
women had no such right. However this was possible because Greek city States were
small .In modern era democracy originated in Europe. The glorious revolution of 1688
and the bills of rights that Limited the power of the King. American war of independence
and French Revolution which popularized the ideas of liberty, equality and fraternity.
these events made a significant impact in other parts of the world when democracy
expanded from Europe to other parts of Asia and Africa. Initially only the rich and
privileged people were allowed to vote. It was a long struggle for the poor and women to
get their right to vote. Democracy focused on two features:1)People had a right to choose
their representatives and 2) curbs were placed on the power of rulers through periodic
elections.
Equality in democracy
Democracy stands much superior to any other form of government in promoting dignity
and freedom of the individual .Every individual wants to receive respect from fellow
beings .Often conflicts arise among individuals because some feel that they are not
treated with due respect. The passion for respect and freedom are the basis of democracy
.Democracies throughout the world have recognised this at least in principle. Article 15
in the Indian Constitution guarantees equality to all the citizens of the country
.Untouchability has been abolished. India is still struggling for equality. Equality means
the state of being the same especially in status, rights or opportunities.
Equal right to vote
India is a democratic country where all adults who are 18 and above are allowed to vote
irrespective of religion, caste, education level and financial status called the universal
adult franchise and is an essential component of all democracies. The two ways in which
the government has tried to implement the equality that is guaranteed in the constitution
is first through laws and second through government programs.
Enhancing human dignity
People are not discriminated on the basis of caste, colour, creed, status, class ,gender,
place of birth, religion ,property etc. The principle of equality of all citizens is
recognised. In India laws like prevention of untouchability Act 1958 and prevention of
civil rights act 1976 have been made. Reservation for scheduled caste and Scheduled
Tribes and backward classes has been provided in government jobs and educational
institutions. Scholarships for girl child and dalit children have been launched .Mid day
meal scheme in government schools has been introduced to encourage children to attend
school.
Democracy promotes dignity and freedom of an individual in the following manner:
Long struggles by women have made people realise the importance of respect and equal
treatment for women in a democracy .This realisation has helped v the disadvantaged and
discriminated castes of the society by providing them with equal status and opportunity
.Expectations from democracy also function as the criteria for judging any democratic
country. Democracy examination never gets over as it passes one test it produces another
test. As people get some benefits of democracy, they ask for more and want to make
democracy even better. The fact that people are complaining, protesting, expressing
views are testimonials to the success of democracy.

Day 5 :
Long answer questions :
1) Explain various forms of government with examples?
2) How does democracy accommodate diversity?
3) Does inequality exist in other countries of the world
Check your answers :
1)Various forms of government are :
1) Dictatorial form of government : In this form of government power is
concentrated in one person or a group of persons. The citizens have no role in
governance. The Dictator imposes his wish on the people example in Iraq under
Saddam Hussein.
2) Monarchial form of government: In this form of Government the power is
concentrated in a king or a monarch. It is of two types: constitutional monarchy
and absolute monarchy.
3) Parliamentary form of Government : In this form of Government the executive
is a part of the Legislature and responsible to it. If the Prime Minister loses his or

the chief executive and is elected for a fixed term. The legislature cannot remove

democracy offers an opportunity to this diversity to negotiate through dialogues and
discussions.

Rosa Parks an Afro-American woman who refused to vacate herseat for a white

discrimination on the basis of race, religion or maternal origin.
