Modern Meander a mystery quilt by Debbie Caffrey
(Class 45)
Construction requires basic rotary cutting and
machine piecing skills.
Whether you’ve done one before or are new to the process, it goes like this:
pick up the first step and select fabric (at 20% off if purchased here).
Debbie will be at Open House on Sat., Jan. 9 to help with fabric selections.
Thereafter, get a new step each month, steps one through six.
The finished size of this quilt is 65 1/2” x 75 1/2”.
In August we will get together (no charge) to show and tell.
All mystery quilt participants are welcome, however far you’ve progressed.
Debbie Caffrey is a self-published author of fourteen books, dozens of patterns, and
more than 250 mystery quilt patterns. She has taught quilting since 1983, teaching
nationally and internationally since 1994.
Here is a little insight to Debbie.
“I am a puzzle lover, all kinds of puzzles: crossword, Sudoku, whodunit
mysteries, logic puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, math story problems, and even
cruising down the aisles of a home improvement store planning other
uses for what I see.
Once I bought a soapstone marker at a welding supply store. I use it to
mark quilts. What was I doing in a welding supply store? My husband
was buying a CO2 canister for his homebrew kegs. Neither of us was
interested in learning to weld, but that did not keep us from exploring
everything in the store.
I have sewn all my life. Before I was two years old I sat on the kitchen
floor with a pie tin full of buttons and strung them onto a piece of
crochet thread with a darning needle.
When I was seven we lived on a farm. To keep me busy through the summer my mother taught
me to sew on a machine that only went forward. I made all my summer clothes that year. All of
them were green because that is the one fabric we had. It reminds me of the scene in The Sound
of Music where the children are wearing play clothes made from the old drapes.
In 1983 I took my first quilting class and learned about the rotary cutter. My life took a major
turn. I began teaching quilting a few months later. It was hard to believe that my passions had
come together so perfectly. I could sew puzzles! That is exactly what I have been doing for
almost thirty years. I am still pinching myself!”

Making Waves Tote (308A) $59 + tax (kit included)
Friday, February 19 9:30am-4:30pm
The Making Waves Tote is the perfect size and can be put to good use in so many ways that you wish you have several of them. Once you see how easy it is to whip one of these up, there will be no stopping you from making more for yourself or friend. The front pocket fabric is created with decorative cover hem stitching and edged with Baby Lock’s exclusive wave stitch. To add an extra punch to the binding, the wave stitch is sewn along
the edge before securing the binding along the top. This project demonstrates that the chain stitch can be used for both a decorative effect as well as a functional one.
Touch of Class Wall Hanging (308B) $59 + tax (kit included) Saturday, February 20
9:30am-4:30pm If you love achieving professional results with a little amount of effort, then this project is for you. The Baby Lock Unity’s features guarantee all your sewing and embroidery endeavors will be pleasurable experiences. The state-of-the–art Guide Beam technology eliminates the need for drawing diagonal lines when sewing half square triangle because it shines a red line on the fabric making it easy to sew from corner to corner. Add exquisite texture by incorporating the built-in candlewicking and bobbin work stitches which add interest and dimension. The Baby Lock Unity also boasts of its new Needle Beam technology so you’ll never be confused again when to position your embroidery design. Additionally, you’ll definitely admire the large built-in lettering which is a focal point of the project.
Sign up for both 308A & 308B and receive a $10 discount.
