A MESSAGE ABOUT ALCOHOL Your college experience will be defined by virtually limitless access to academic opportunities and resources. It will also be a time of vast freedom coupled with newfound responsibilities. With those responsibilities come obligations. Be aware that Duke has clear expectations in effect not only during New Student Orientation (NSO), but year-round. These expectations are enumerated in policies that flow from the philosophy of the Duke Community Standard, our honor code.

Regarding alcohol, it is illegal and against Duke policy to purchase, possess, consume, or distribute alcohol if you are under the age of 21, both on and off campus. Even if you are over 21, as a new student you are expected not to consume any alcohol during the entire week of NSO. Be aware that East Campus is an alcohol-free campus within and around the residence halls. Failure to follow these expectations may result in university disciplinary action and/or criminal citations. University disciplinary action may impact future opportunities for you, including study abroad, participation in DukeEngage, and your admission to graduate/professional degree programs.
