Our Core Values
The Communication, Learning and Autism Support Service (CLASS) is
committed to offering support and training at an individual or whole school level
in the areas of Autism, Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
and Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD).
We believe that children with learning differences should be celebrated for their
strengths and supported with their areas of need.
To reflect these values we:
• value and seek the views of pupils through CLASS Pupil Voice materials
• value parent/carer input, recognising their expertise with their child’s strengths
and needs
• offer an extensive portfolio of services ranging from consultation, assessment
and specialist interventions to training and professional development groups
• provide a team of advisors and practitioners who hold additional Specialist
qualifications
• provide high quality training and support to schools and educational settings
at an individual or whole school level
• build capacity in schools through the role of our Link Advisors and our core
and traded offers.
One of our key strengths is to offer bespoke training and services. If you don’t
find what you are looking for in this brochure, please get in touch and we will
endeavour to accommodate your needs.

THE CLASS OFFER
The CLASS team can offer a range of expertise and services to your school. We have a
core offer of support available to all mainstream East Sussex schools, as well as a
traded offer. Traded Units can be bought via the Services to Schools Webshop. Support
for individuals from CLASS can also be accessed via the ISEND Front Door.
CLASS support via the ISEND Front Door:
CLASS support for individuals can be accessed via the ISEND Front Door process where
appropriate. Support accessed through the ISEND Front Door is offered as core
support for which there is no charge to schools.
CLASS can help in a number of ways depending on the needs of the individual and
the provision that is already in place within the school.
CLASS may provide schools with:
• Guidance involving consultation with the SENCO and recommendations.
• Enhanced Guidance involving observation, gaining parent and pupil views and
recommendations.
• SMART Interventions delivered by skilled practitioners modelling strategies to school
staff.
• Joint support with other ISEND services.

Core offer for primary schools:
CLASS offers a package of core support to primary schools. We aim to build the
capacity within the school to successfully support pupils with additional
communication and learning needs.
• CLASS Link Advisor - Each school is allocated a Link Advisor who acts as a key
point of contact. The Link Advisor works with the school SENCo to support whole
school development in relation to communication needs, learning difficulties and
autism.
The Link Advisor offers two Link Meetings with the school SENCo per year in order to
discuss, advise and signpost on identified issues. In addition, schools can access two
additional Drop In visits per year, the format of which can be agreed with the
SENCo.
• Core training - Primary schools are offered three training packages per year, free
of charge. These are universal level training sessions suitable for all staff in:
Understanding Autism
Understanding Speech, Language and Communication Needs
Understanding Dyslexia
Each training session is approximately two to three hours in length. These will be
delivered at a centralised location (please see Core training section).

Core offer for secondary schools:
CLASS offers a package of core support to secondary schools. We aim to build the
capacity within the school to successfully support pupils with additional
communication and learning needs.
• CLASS Link Advisor – Each school is allocated a Link Advisor, who acts as a key
point of contact. The Link Advisor works with the school SENCo to support whole
school development in relation to communication needs, learning difficulties and
autism.
The Link Advisor offers two Link Meetings with the school SENCo per year in order to
discuss, advise and signpost on identified issues, with a particular focus around
transition for vulnerable pupils.
They will also endeavour to be at one in-house information sharing session that the
school have set up.
• Core support options - Secondary schools are offered three choices from the
following menu of core support options per year, free of charge:
Understanding Autism
Understanding Speech, Language and Communication Needs
Understanding Dyslexia

UNITS
CLASS support is charged in units.
1 unit = 1 hour of an advisor’s time or 1.5 hours of a practitioner’s time. 1unit = £70.
The unit cost is reviewed at the beginning of each financial year. The current unit cost
can be found on the Services to Schools website. You can buy units at any time
during the year. After you have purchased units, we will keep you informed as to how
you are spending them. If you need to buy more you can do so at any time. You will
find more details on the Services to Schools website:
https://www.services2schools.co.uk/services/listservices/10 (Codes INC04 or INC04-1)
Alternatively, you can contact your CLASS Link Advisor or email

EXAMPLES OF TRADED SUPPORT
The types of support your school can access using CLASS units:
Consultation service
• Consultation Meetings – the role of Inclusion Manager/SENCo in a school can be
isolating and it can be useful to have the opportunity to discuss your needs with a
specialist.
• Drop-In Sessions for School Staff – an opportunity for teachers and support staff to
discuss any issues they may have in supporting the needs of their most vulnerable
learners.
Individual assessment and reports:
CLASS can carry out a range of individual pupil assessment in order to
ascertain a detailed picture of pupil attainment, strengths and areas of need using
standardised and diagnostic assessment tests.
• Individual Assessment for Exam Access Arrangements - A CLASS Advisor can act
as a Specialist Assessor and administer appropriate testing for Form 8 Access
Arrangements.
Traded interventions:
CLASS staff can run specialist individual or group interventions tailored to the needs of
your pupil(s) on a traded basis (e.g. Social Skills, Lego Therapy Approaches). The cost
of this will include planning and preparation. We recommend that member of
school staff attends any intervention sessions in order to be able to integrate
strategies into the school day and ensure sustained progress and generalised
outcomes.
Please contact your Link Advisor, or CLASS directly, to discuss further options.
Other services we offer
• Individual Pupil Observation – A structured observation used to inform inclusive
practice for an individual pupil to support their access to the curriculum and act as
an initial analysis of their need. This can be joint with a key member of staff.
• Support for Individual Speech and Language Therapy targets – CLASS
practitioners can help support staff develop their confidence and skills in delivering
Speech and Language Therapy targets/interventions to individual pupils
Guided mentoring through the OLT courses (SLCN, Dyslexia, Autism and Motor
co-ordination).

DESCRIPTION OF TRADED TRAINING COURSES
DST:
Learn how to administer and interpret the Dyslexia Screening
Test – Junior (DST-J) to build a profile of strengths and
weaknesses for pupils experiencing marked and persistent
difficulty in learning to read, write and spell.
The training takes you through a protocol for identifying dyslexia
and then focuses on each of the DST-J subtests in detail. You
will have an opportunity to do some tests and practice scoring
them.
Please note: You will need to own or purchase a DST-J
Emotional Regulation:
Find out about what may be underpinning the challenges in
being able to self-regulate. You will gain knowledge of how to
support young people with the recognition of emotions and the
development of regulation strategies.
You will gain an understanding of what materials and strategies
can be used including the ‘Zones of Regulation’ framework.
You will be given examples and suggestions on how to
implement materials with individuals, small groups and/or the
whole school.
Language Link:
Find out about why Language Link is an important assessment tool. Learn how to
set up and run language groups in your school.
Learn about useful classroom resources and how to use them.
Have an opportunity to problem solve with colleagues from
other schools and to explore resources that can be shared with
parents.
This will be 2 sessions.
Jump Ahead and Sensory Circuits:
In this training you will gain a deeper understanding of
developmental co-ordination disorder (DCD) and sensory
integration (SI).
You will have a clearer idea of the difference between
Sensory Circuits and Jump Ahead so that you can choose
which programme is most suitable for each individual pupil.
We will give you the knowledge you need to assess, plan and implement the
Sensory Circuits and Jump Ahead
programmes in your setting. You will have the opportunity to try out activities from
both programmes.

DESCRIPTION OF TRADED TRAINING COURSES (cont.)
Word Aware:
Find out about the importance and impact of developing
vocabulary with your pupils. You will gain knowledge of how to
put curriculum guidance about vocabulary into practice and
build on good practice.
You will learn a structured approach to teaching vocabulary in
the classroom.
You will have the opportunity to explore practical and inspiring
ideas that can be easily applied by busy classroom practitioners
to develop both spoken and written vocabulary. You will leave with resources
and ideas to apply immediately.
Speechlink:
This training will give you a comprehensive hands-on introduction
to using the SpeechLink programme. Learn about why supporting
speech development is important.
Have an opportunity to practise using the SpeechLink assessment
tool and resources to deliver effective interventions.
PLR:
PLR is a popular, ‘wave 3’ intervention, which targets reading development and
also impacts on writing and self-esteem.
The intervention has been widely recognised as successful,
and is included in ‘What works for pupils with literacy difficulties?’
by Greg Brookes from the University of Sheffield, commissioned
by the DfES.
The intervention requires a staff member to work 1-1 with a pupil,
at least 3 times a week (approx. 20 mins per session), for 12
weeks. Schools must send a teacher (SENCo/Literacy
Coordinator.)
and a TA who will train together on this 2 day course. Applicants must be
available to attend both days. Bonus: Schools will be given a PLR file containing assessment for learning
resources, and resources for use in the teaching sessions.
Makaton Level 1 and 2:
Recommended if you need to use Makaton in your work. You will
learn: signs and symbols from the core vocabulary, research into
sign and symbol use, symbol design themes and an overview of
alternative systems of communication.
You will receive manuals and a certificate of attendance. (This is an essential part
of entry criteria for Makaton tutor training).

development.
This course raises awareness of all aspects of the writing
process and how to identify barriers to writing, by looking at the
underlying skills needed. It provides assessment for writing and
good practice strategies/interventions for supporting children.
SRE:
This course will give you the confidence to address SRE with your children and
young people who are on the autism spectrum. You will learn
about the importance of giving children on the spectrum
accurate information and the need to develop social
awareness from an early age.
You will have an opportunity to openly discuss the complex
issues around sex and relationships education of children and young people on
the autism spectrum in a safe and supportive environment.
Women and Girls with Autism:
Find out about current thinking and developments relating to girls with autism
including a valuable overview of the autism spectrum. Hear
personal stories and case studies. Gain knowledge of how

Find out about the features of a demand avoidant profile and common issues
that may occur at school. Learn about the background and
some theories linked to demand avoidance. Look at the
impact on different areas of a pupil’s life. Hear about
intervention options, workable strategies and methods of
supporting these pupils. Learn about a range of measures to
help pupils re-engage with learning, consider a flexible package and use a range
of approaches.

‘How t …’ Workshops
This year CLASS will be putting on a number of
practical, hands-on workshops. We want to support school staff
to increase their knowledge and understanding of
resources available to aid children’s progress.
Our workshops will run for approximately 2 hours and will help staff
to understand all of the tools that are at their disposal.
Workshops are offered on a Traded Basis. Units must be
purchased before booking on and can be found here:

DESCRIPTION OF TRADED WORKSHOPS
Makaton Refresher:
This workshop is for people who have previously undertaken Makaton Foundation
training who would like to refresh their skills.
You will be able to revisit:
•Signs and symbols from the Core Vocabulary (Stages 1-4 and Additional)
•Symbol design themes
Please note, all attendees will be required to provide a copy of their Foundation certif-
icate prior to booking a place on the course.
Social Skills:
In this practical workshop, you will learn how to run a social skills
group. Hear how social skills groups can support children and
young people who struggle to communicate and interact
socially with others.
Learn how to use a variety of activities to develop social skills
and how these can be adapted across a range of year groups.
CLASS will give you the tools to set up, facilitate and assess the
progress of students in a social skills group.
Comic Strip Conversations:
This workshop will provide an introduction to comic strip conversations created by
Carol Gray and an opportunity to review tools and examples. You will develop an
understanding of the benefits for learning and the rationale
behind the approach. You will develop skills in using a
communication system for pupils who may be struggling with
verbal expression and social understanding.
There will be practical opportunities to complete conversation
drawings and to systematically identify actions, behaviours and
thoughts. Learn how to provide visual representations of the different levels of
communication that take place in a conversation, using symbols, drawings and
colour. Use stick figures and symbols to represent social interactions and abstract
aspects of conversation.
Gain practical experience of using questioning about a specific situation or type of
social interaction. Learn how comic strip conversations can be used to problem solve
current issues and to develop plans for situations in the future that may be causing
anxiety.
Precision Teaching:
The Precision Teaching approach is a method of planning and teaching to meet the
needs of an individual who is experiencing difficulty with acquiring or
maintaining skills. It involves using short one minute tasks to support
the building of a skill. It has inbuilt monitoring functions to evaluate
the effectiveness of the teaching methods and to track the progress
the child makes very carefully, making changes to ensure the child is
learning as effectively and quickly as they can.
This highly practical workshop will show you how to apply the
precision teaching approach, giving you opportunities to practice each stage and
incorporate existing good practice.
You will leave with all the resources and knowledge to apply the approach
immediately in your school.

DESCRIPTION OF TRADED WORKSHOPS (cont.)
Speed Up:
This highly practical workshop will show you how ‘Speed Up’ can
be used to support the development of fluent handwriting in a fun
and active way. It is primarily for use with children from Year 3 to
Year 8 whose handwriting may be characterised as slow, illegible
and lacking fluency. The programme can however also be used
for children over 13 years of age who want to improve their
handwriting.
CLASS will teach you how to use ‘Speed Up’ to develop
kinaesthetic awareness. You will see how children and young people are helped to
internalise and develop control over rhythms and patterns of movement, as well as
appropriate levels of pressure to apply when writing. Improvements in these areas
will in turn support children to write with improved fluency and speed.
Word Aware:
Learn how to use ‘Word Aware’ in a practical way so that you can
use it with a small group of children identified as requiring
pre-teaching of classroom and/or topic vocabulary.
See how to put a group together, run a session and have fun
teaching the target vocabulary.
Please note, you must have attended the whole day ‘Word Aware’
training in order to attend this workshop.
CIP/In Print 3:
Hear how CIP and In print 3 can support a range of learners within the classroom to
better access their learning potential. Learn how to make resources for lessons that
can enhance the understanding and independent learning of
C/YPs through the use of visual supports. The workshop will raise
awareness of the importance of visual supports for not only children
with SEND but all children, as well as giving you practical hands-on
support to make initial resources.
Clicker 7:
CLASS will show you how to use Clicker 7 to effectively support children who find
writing a challenge; impacting on their learning and progress. This workshop will give
you practical hands-on guidance on how Clicker 7 can be embedded into the
classroom as a tool to discover the potential of reluctant
writers. Learn how to use a number of Clicker elements to
tailor the software to each learner’s ability and needs
e.g. intelligent word prediction, speech feedback and
Clicker grids.

children to develop the language skills that will help them to
reach their full potential in school.
How to develop shared attention and listening skills using the ‘Bucket Time’
Approach:
A practical workshop, designed to show how the ‘Bucket Time’ approach can be
used to improve attention and listening skills, both one-to-one or in
groups.
This workshop will teach you the stages a child will progress through
from being able to focus for a few minutes at a time to being able to

understanding of the strengths and challenges faced by children and young people
with autism and/or social communication difficulties. CLASS+ offer support in the
following formats:
• Weekly advice line
