Beginning in September, Adult
Discipleship Classes will resume! Dr.
Brian Shelton will be teaching a class
entitled, “Kings of Israel.” For six
weeks, this Fall Adult Discipleship
Class will introduce the kings of Israel.
It surveys the books of I/II Samuel and
I/II Kings, highlighting the historical
situation of Israel, the personality of the
kings, and the contribution of Israel’s
leaders as examples to the faith. The
only book needed is a bible with the Old
Testament.

try, The Jetsetters, meets monthly on the 4th Tuesday
at noon in the Fellowship Hall for a covered dish lunch and program or activity. The August lunch-

the world. It won’t cost anything and you can do it
in less than an hour! Beth Crabill will be our tour
guide and lead us through some fun activities. Join
us on Tuesday, August 23rd at noon in the Fellow-ship Hall. Meat will be provided, but please bring a
side dish or dessert to share.

on the second Tuesday to enjoy great fellowship and
food. All ladies are welcome! On August 9th we
will be dining on Lake Burton at The Chophouse at
LaPrade’s. The bus will depart from the Church

lunch at the lake and bring a friend! Please reserve your seat at the table by calling or emailing the
Church Office by noon on August 8th.
United Methodist Men: The
United Methodist Men will gather on
Thursday, August 4th at 7:00pm in the

started in 2010. In its 6 short years, the CTS has
given over a quarter million dollars back to the com-munity. This ministry is a great help to our church
and our community. Tom Chesnick will be prepar-
ing our meal.

7:30am at Crossroads Café in Clarkesville for food
and fellowship. This is a great way to start your day!

Introducing CareMail, a new ministry of CFUMC We are excited to introduce a new ministry of the church, CareMail! Katrina Sta-
ples will coordinate this new program of keeping in touch with church members and letting
them know their CFUMC family is thinking of them. We are most appreciative of the
many years Katrina has faithfully volunteered on our receptionist team, and we thank her
for her many years of good service in this capacity. We are excited that she will be sharing
her talent of reaching out to others through greeting cards on behalf of the church. Please
take a moment to thank Katrina for her good work at the front desk and encourage her in
her new ministry of congregational care. Forms are available in the Church Office if you
would like to request a card on behalf of someone, or you may email Katrina,

Children and Youth Ministries The youth have had a great July!
We took our annual trip to Lake
Junaluska, July 7-10th. We had 15 kids
plus adults spend the weekend worship-
ing, packing meals for Stop Hunger Now
(pictured), and playing basketball, volley-
ball, mini-golf, and more! The kids had a
great time learning about having joy in the Lord
throughout the weekend. The youth fall calendar will be released soon! Our
next event will be Saturday, August 13th. We will play laser tag at Georgia
Joe's, which is next to the bowling alley. Email Brian Butcher to sign up!
We have reopened the sign up link for meals for youth meals! Please
contact Brian Butcher if you or a church group can provide a meal for the youth
on a Sunday this fall! You can sign up online at https://mealtrain.com/qqd39.
We appreciate the meals very much!
The children have had various activities throughout the summer, such as
game nights and attending the Summer Concert Series. Pictured: the children and youth performing VBS
songs for the congregation. Parents, be on the lookout for announcements about our Fall calendar!

CFUMC Preschool “Rooted in faith, growing in love”
CFUMC Preschool is gearing up for a great school year! We serve ages 2 - 5 and we have openings in
all classes. We would love to reach our maximum number of students. If you know or hear of anyone looking
for a preschool, please refer them to us. Sunday, August 7th, will be Preschool Sunday at the 11:00 Classic
Service. We hope to have past and current students attending the service. We will be sharing our recent Pre-K
graduation as well as a day in the life of our preschoolers.
We received several donations from Habersham County Head Start, and Ken Iossi, Campus Handy-
man, is giving our classrooms a fresh coat of paint. He is also working with Jerry Medlock to give us much
needed shade on the playground. We are so grateful for the support we receive through donations of educa-
tional materials, financial donations and the physical labor of those who help maintain the preschool build-
ing. The church staff and volunteers always go the extra mile to support the preschool and assist wherever
they can. Our program is very blessed and we ask for continued prayer as we begin our third year.
Preschool Open House is Thursday, August 11th, 5:00-6:30 pm. Anyone who would like to see the
preschool is welcome to attend. A huge thank you to the Hospitality Committee who will be providing re-
freshments for our families. Thank you for being a caring and supportive congregation. Our teachers feel
blessed to be able to teach children about Jesus.

Don’t forget to submit your Time and Talent Survey by Sunday, August 7th! Are you looking
for somewhere to get involved or a opportunity where you can serve? Grab a Time and Talent Survey to
see all the opportunities available at CFUMC! Our goal is to collect a brochure per every member, all
ages, in our congregation. Brochures are available around our church campus. When you are ready to turn
them in, drop them in the baskets located in the Fellowship Hall, Sanctuary ramp exit, or Connection. You
can also drop them in the offering plate or bring them to the Church Office. Thank you to everyone who
has submitted a survey. We are in the process of reviewing those, and we will be in touch with you soon!
Thank you in advance for your desire to get connected in the ministries and service opportunities at
CFUMC!

for Certified Lay Servants as a ’broadening experience’.

First UMC (2870 Thompson Bridge Road, Gainesville):

Prayer Gatherings
Tuesday Morning Prayer: Our Prayer
Group has a lovely room in The Connection
Ministry Center, room C-17, and our group meets
every Tuesday at 9:30-10:30am. Come and join
this wonderful group of prayer warriors! God loves
a praying church!
Skeins of Love Prayer Shawl Ministry: A new
fellowship/outreach group began September 13th,
2012, at Clarkesville First United Methodist
Church. Ladies with an interest in knitting and cro-
cheting have since met weekly to make prayer
shawls, hats, and scarves. Their handiwork has
blessed hearts on a military base in Afghanistan,
been dispersed globally through United Methodist
Women, warmed people of the Redbird Mission
Conference in Kentucky, enveloped children of
The United Methodist Children’s Home, and com-
forted many folks right here in our community.
Skeins of Love invites others to fellowship
with them and share in this caring ministry. All
skill levels are welcome. Yarn and instruction are
available. They gather each Thursday at 10:00am
in The Connection Ministry Center of Clarkesville
First UMC on Washington Street.
CommUnity Thrift: Recent
gifts to the community include
CFUMC Building Fund, $1850; Shar-
ing & Caring, $400; $500 each to Habersham
County Senior Center, Clarkesville Soup Kitchen,
and Cornelia Soup Kitchen. Saturday volunteers
are still welcomed. Individuals or groups can con-
tact Jennifer Boydstun in the Church Office to find
out more. Thank you for supporting CTS with your
prayers, donations and purchases!
Clarkesville Soup Kitchen:
Please consider becoming a volunteer at
the Habersham Soup Kitchen in down-
town Clarkesville. Three to four hours per month
will help us continue to feed the areas hungry. In
our 25 years we have literally fed thousands. We
are currently looking for volunteers on the 1st, 2nd
and 4th Thursdays, the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays,
and the 5th Tuesdays of each month. We have fully
stocked freezers and pantry’s and are happy to as-
sist you as you cook or serve. We have re-vitalized
our kitchen and are now proud to only offer
“green” disposables. Please call today and help us
in our mission to feed the hungry. Contact Sharon
Smessaert, President and Administrator Director,
706-754-6539, for more information.
Desserts that can be frozen are a tremendous
help as they are often expensive for teams to pro-
vide. If you would like to donate a "freezable" des-
sert, you may contact the Church Office, 706-754-
2677.
The Cornelia Soup Kitchen is excited to
be transitioning to a new board. During this period
they have an immediate need to raise $1200 for op-
erating funds for August. Many in the community
benefit from the good work of the Cornelia Soup
Kitchen. Let's help! You may make a donation to
our church today, noted Soup Kitchen.

and a blessing. Please prayerfully consider serving in this ministry. Please contact Kelly Bur-

in Habersham to make this commitment
each month. A big thanks to our July drivers,
Howard and Eugenia Burke. Our August drivers
will be Rick and Alice Soderman. The dates are
August 1st-5th.
We are still looking for drivers to plug in
during the weeks to break up the routes. There's
only 9 meals on our route, which takes around 1
hour, 15 minutes. If you feel this ministry is some-

individuals who may be willing to assist in trans-
porting some of their residents from their facility
to their places of employment throughout the
week. If you are interested in serving as a driver,
please contact the Church Office.
Children’s Church needs YOU!
Help us update our Military Wall of Honor We hope you have enjoyed the Military Wall of Honor located in the Connection Ministry Center. It is
our purpose to display how proud we are of all those Active Duty service members and Veterans who are part
of or connected with our Church Family. We encourage you to pray for them as we do in our Tuesday Morn-
ing Prayer Group. Their service protects our freedoms and way of life. We are a grateful church!
It is time to update! We need your assistance. We have been a growing church, adding many new
members. If anyone fits one of the following categories and is not currently included on the Military Wall of
Honor, please provide us with their information.
Active Duty Service Members: If you, your son or daughter, grandchild, nephew or niece are cur-
rently on active duty, please provide their name, email, or address. We will send them a letter asking
for information like that currently displayed on the Wall of Honor.
Veterans: Please provide the following: Branch of Service, Rank, Name, Number of years served,
Overseas Duty Stations, email or phone number.
Deceased Veterans: If your father, mother, son, or daughter was a veteran that has died, please pro-
vide the same information as listed above for the veterans. If you only know the name, that is enough
to add their name to the Wall of Honor.
You may leave your information in the Church Office or you may submit it to Sandy Stryker by email,
[email protected], or by mail, 135 Maize Mill Path, Clarkesville. We appreciate your time and effort to
help us with updates.

From the Desk of our Finance Chair:
I would like to provide the congregation a brief note on the current financial status of the church.
The summer months historically mark lower giving levels within the church.
The church has continued to fund all of the activities the congregation has committed itself to sup-
porting. Apportionments continue to be paid in full. The church has absorbed several costs concerning the
structural upkeep of the facilities. Please be aware that there will be a large expenditure forth coming for
the Connection building. We will be upgrading the air conditioning units for that building and all expendi-
tures will be paid out of the Future Facilities Fund.
Your gifts continue to allow the church to address a large number of needs with limited burden on
the budget. I look forward to many of the new projects, spiritual and physical, moving forward in the
church. As always the finance committee will use your gifts wisely to advance the mission of the church.
Your brother in Christ,
William J. Spivey

The Mailbox Thank you and your congregation at CFUMC for your generosity and support of the ministry of Wesley Woods through the
2016 Mother’s Day offering. The communities at Wesley Woods offer a higher quality of life for North Georgia’s older adults and
can often eliminate the need to move to skilled nursing of hospitalization. This allows residents to thrive in their communities
through living longer, healthier lives.

It’s “Thankful Thursday” at Camp Evergreen and I want to say a huge thank you to you all for your support, prayers, and encour-
agement. You are part of God’s abundant provision for both the Grady family and our ministry. You nurture us during the year so
that we can serve over the summer, and then you pour out your gifts and acts of service into that too. Wow! We are so blessed!
The Grady Family
How do you say “thank you” when you know the words are not enough? For all your cards, notes, phone calls, thank you. When
you live alone anything that talks to you, like the beautiful writings on the cards, is a lifting experience. I am so blessed to be able to
call everyone “my church family.” The Lord has blessed me abundantly over and over. For each and every one of you I thank God
every night in my prayers for your kindness.

Thank you for your recent gift to the Redbird Missionary Conference, Inc. We appreciate all of your help that you provide
through your prayers and support. Your help allows us to continue our mission, “to minister to the spiritual, physical, educational,
and economic needs of people and to equip them to fulfill their God-given potential.”
Shirley Ann Walker, Conference Treasurer, Red Bird Missionary Conference
On behalf of the staff and board of directors of Victory Home Helping Hand, Inc., thank you for your continued, generous sup-
port of this organization.
Casey Minish, Program Director, Victory Home
Thank you for sending me to Camp Evergreen. I learned that there are 118 different types of elements. I love the zipline when we
go swimming.

Dear Skeins of Love, our families that we serve adore the beautiful crochet and knitted blankets. Thank you for giving and loving
these children in such a special way!

The Pastor’s Report
by Rev. Brian T. Butler, pastor
A Brand New Building
I want to thank all of you who are continuing to give to our Future Facilities
Fund. Our Sharing the Future campaign is wrapping up with a burst of generosity as
folks continue to give toward retiring our debt for The Connection building.
Our Future Facilities Committee will soon be unveiling some plans for an exciting new build-
ing that will link our two main structures with a new fellowship hall large enough to accommodate our
growing congregation for special events and occasional Sunday meals. This will allow the current Fel-
lowship Hall to be remodeled into classroom space.
What I like about the plan is how it helps make the church more accessible for those with lim-
ited mobility. An elevator will make sure folks can go from floor to floor. Plus, the plan still allows
room for a future sanctuary along Washington Street when that time comes.
Of course everything will be highly publicized and discussed in many forums before you get to
vote on whether or not to proceed. In the meantime, “stay tuned,” for more news is on the way!
Love in Christ,
Rev. Brian T. Butler, Pastor
