Claremont Colleges 2011 REU
June 6-July 29
In addition to working on exciting research projects in mathematics and statistics, students will participate in workshops designed to introduce them to various aspects of a career in the mathematical sciences. A weekly speaker series and numerous social activities will round out the program. The application is available on: http://ccms.claremont.edu/REU Application deadline: February 15, 2011

Topics for 2011 Statistics and Knot Theory
Statistics and Knot Theory
Statistical Modeling of Music Prof. Talithia Williams, Harvey Mudd College Is it possible to extract information about the genre of a song based on a time series of the audio signal? We will look at modeling various genres of electronic music to extract information about rhythmic patterns and tempo that will aid in automatic assignment of genre.
Statistical Clustering and Classification of Music Prof. Gabriel Chandler, Pomona College We will consider the problem of classifying a seismic signal as having originated from an earthquake or an explosion. In particular, we will consider the task of assigning a time series to its genre for musical time series.
Virtual Shadow Module Invariants Prof. Sam Nelson, Claremont McKenna College Virtual knots do not fit in ordinary three-dimensional space, instead requiring nonzero genus or "wormholes" in order to be tied. We will define a family of new invariants of virtual knots using algebraic objects known as virtual shadow modules.
