Hello Clairmont Family! Now that the weather is finally changing, I think we can officially say that fall is here! I want to first take a moment to say thank you for all you did to make my Installation service a wonderful and special occasion. I am thrilled to be officially in my role as Associate Pastor of Clairmont Presbyterian Church. I was grateful that my parents were able to be here to celebrate with me. As my mom said goodbye she told me that she was glad I was here, in this church, and though I was a long ways from home she felt like I was in the right place. It isn’t always easy to live across the country from my family, but I am deeply grateful to be welcomed into the Clairmont family. A few weeks ago I attended a retreat for first-year pastors in Louisville, Kentucky. As we made introductions the inevitable question was, “where are you from?” Since I first left for college it has always been challenging to answer that question, but recently it has become even more difficult. I am from Washington, but I lived in Idaho for a year and New Jersey for three years, and now I live in Georgia. While I will probably always claim an allegiance to the mountains of the Northwest, I am realizing that where I am from, or where I call home, has more to do with the relationships I have and the roots I put down. For me, that means I’m home when I’m here in Atlanta, GA. I will always love Washington. I will always remember my time in New Jersey (though I won’t miss the drivers). But this is a new beginning, and a new place to love and to call home. Though it’s often easy to look back–to long for the way things once were, I find comfort and hope in God’s promise in Isaiah 43:18-19, “Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing.” I think this is an important promise to hold onto as we look towards the future. What new thing is God doing in you? Among us? Hello Clairmont Family!

Now that the weather is finally changing, I think we can officially say that fall is here! I want to first take a moment to say thank you for all you did to make my Installation service a wonderful and special occasion. I am thrilled to be officially in my role as Associate Pastor of Clairmont Presbyterian Church. I was grateful that my parents were able to be here to celebrate with me. As my mom said goodbye she told me that she was glad I was here, in this church, and though I was a long ways from home she felt like I was in the right place. It isn’t always easy to live across the country from my family, but I am deeply grateful to be

welcomed into the Clairmont family. Among us?Blessings,

SunDAY SChOOL WORK DAY

On Saturday, October 18 from 10am-4pm, we will be revitalizing the Upper Elementary classroom in Milligan Hall. We are going to transform this nondescript, featureless space into a classroom these children will enjoy visiting each week. The plan is to turn it into a dock, much like one where the disciples spent time. If you have artistic or carpentry talent, or just enjoy painting, we can use your help! Even if you are not a painter, there are many tasks that can be done to brighten this room. Make plans to help us create a fun space for our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students (and their teachers!) We need help prepping the room the day before and at any time during the day on Saturday. Contact Wendy at [email protected] if you have questions or ideas!

haitian Partnership - This summer our Presbyterian Women Treasurer wrote a check to the Partnership for its Goat Project for $4,680. There were many, contributions from Clairmont members not associated with Presbyterian Women. The Haitian Partnership has been named a recipient of the national PW’s Thank Offering, one of two annual offerings. The grant is over $46,000. It is going to be used to create a center for maternal-infant health and to train 21 community health workers and traditional birth attendants. Once again, Clairmont’s PW will be encouraging our Clairmont family to support the partnership. Anne Kilpatrick will be coordinating this effort this year. Center for Lifelong Learning Prepares Churches for Aging Population with Older Adult Ministry Certificate Decatur, GA—The Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL) at Columbia Theological Seminary and the Presbyterian Older Adult Ministries Network (POAMN) are pleased to announce a new partnership that will better equip churches and faith-based organizations to address the needs of older participants. Beginning in April 2015, the CLL will be the host location for the Older Adult Ministry Certificate Program (OAM). The program meets a very real need for congrega-tions. It is not uncommon for churches to be half or more older adults, and in small congregations, nearly all may be older. Clergy and Christian educators increasingly recognize the need to know more about the second half of life as it relates to their mission and ministry. The program is open to participants from any denomination or faith tradition. Four core classes and a capstone project are required to complete the Certificate Program. Two classes will be offered each spring at the CLL; participants may begin with any of these scheduled classes. Pre-course reading and post-course assignments are required. The certificate course of study may be completed in 24-36 months. Columbia Theological Seminary is an educational institution of the Presbyterian Church (USA). The Center for Lifelong Learning serves as a resource for church professionals and lay people. For a current list of upcoming programs offered by the CLL, visit

ThCA gets a “Cool” grant from the Atlanta Community Food Bank! Toco Hill’s Community Alliance has received a substantial grant from the

Atlanta Community Food Bank. These funds will be used to install a

large walk-in in refrigerator and walk-in freezer, similar in size to what a restaurant might use. This will enable THCA to increase the amount of food distributed and the number of people served. The focus will be on fresh food, such as fruits, vegetables and dairy. The additional freezer space gives the option of distributing large pieces of meat, such as turkeys at Thanksgiving, and freezing any excess food we might have for later use. THCA continues to explore sources for fresh free food. We offer free groceries to all who ask, so if you need food or know someone who does, come 1790 Lavista Rd, Monday-Thursday 1-4pm. What is the Faulkner Fund?

Sometimes you see a memorial gift to the CPC Faulkner Fund. This fund began with a large gift from Elder Ken and Mary Faulkner, who saw a need for major expenses not covered in our church budget such as breakdowns in the air conditioning, maintain-ing the building, or repairing an unexpected roof leak. This fund has been greatly used and needs to be replenished from time to time or it will vanish. When giving a memorial gift to the church, please consider marking it for the Faulkner Fund. The need is there.

Heartfelt THANKS to my Clairmont family for the love and support I have received from you since I became a member of this special body of believers on October 25, 1987. My birthday reception, along with the sanctuary flowers, from Zoe and Eddie Daniel, made my heart overflow with love for you all and a sincere sense of gratitude to God for placing me here at Clairmont. A huge THANKS to the following named individuals who made my reception possible. They are: Lynn Black, Christine and Gene Callaway, Bruce and Dawna Daniel, Cyndi Harper. Amy Lockwood, Linda Massey, Deb Morelli, Barbara Powers, Kay Schoepke, Kip and Debi Schoepke, Allison and Jack Spangler, Gayle Turner and Margaret Watkins. It was here, at Clairmont, that I truly found God and began my walk with Him. So see, I owe so much to you all - you not only gave me a new life, you saved it. Finally, thanks again for all the cards, phone calls, gifts, breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. I have been completely overwhelmed by this, my Clairmont family. May our walk together continue, for at least a few more years, until I am called to my eternal rest. May God continue to shower His grace and love upon each of you as you seek to do His will in your life and may He bless this church as we move forward with Pastor Owen and Pastor Kimmy.

At the Azalea Village Workday (September 27) three houses were power-washed; two garages were cleaned out; unneeded stuff was put out on the curb; some furniture and appliances were provided (or hooked up) for a couple of houses. Afterward the volunteers who remained adjourned to Hot Wings Café II in Tucker for food and fellowship. Check out the AVM facebook page and you’ll find the names of all the volunteers who participated.

Our loving Christian sympathy is extended to Allan Wimbish on the death of his daughter, robin Cale on Sunday, August 24, 2014, in Richmond, VA and to the family and friends of former member Dr. glenn McCormick who died on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 in Aiken, SC. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Eileen at 66 Juniper Loop, Aiken, SC 29803.

WITh ThAnKS Thanks to Jane Jaros for volunteering to answer the phone at the front desk on Wednesday afternoons. Thanks to Mary Butler and Julie Walker for taking Judy Johnson to doctor’s appointments.
