Clairemont and Bay Park residents in the know are making

their way to the Morena District to pick up tickets for the 7th Annual Taste of Morena, coming up on Wednesday April 23rd. This springtime family-friendly event has become a favorite of the foodies in the area who look forward to the opportunity to sample menu items from the thriving Morena Districts restaurants and breweries.

With attendance strictly limited to just 500, it makes sense to purchase tickets early; the event is always a sellout. Tickets are $20 and are available now at Coles Fine Flooring and Jeromes on West Morena and the US Bank on Napa.

For those who havent attended before, the Taste of Morena is a culinary tour of the area along and just o Morena Blvd., from Clairemont Drive south to Linda Vista Road. This year 18 establishments will be welcoming guests with sample-sized versions of selected menu items. The range of cuisines included shows o the diversity of the restaurants in the Morena District. Bistro and BBQ, Cuban and Mexican, Italian and Thai; all are featured on the Taste route. Looking for something new? How about a gastropub or a

brewery tasting room? Your sweet tooth wont be left unsatis ed either whether its cake or frozen yogurt you desire, and of course a delicious cup of co ee from a locally-owned co eehouse will give you energy to make a few more stops.

Speaking of making stops, the Morena Business Association, which sponsors the Taste of Morena, has made it easy to travel to all the participating restaurants, with free shuttles stopping at 11 spots on a continuous loop through the evening. No worries about drinking and driving after a visit to one of the breweries! Plus the relaxed having-fun atmosphere on the shuttles always seems to facilitate new friendships.

Joining the list of restaurants on the Taste of Morena for the rst time are Zpizza, Bay Park Co ee and Fiji Yogurt. Past year favorites participating again this year are Bacis, Bulls Smokin BBQ, NY Giant Pizza, Sardinas, Bay Park Fish Co., Andres, Tio Leos, O Shore Grill, J.V.s, Luce, J&T Thai Street Food, Home Brew Mart at Ballast Point, Kona Kakes, Coronado Brewing Company and Dan Diegos. Even if you have attended a past Taste of Morena, with so many choices and some new spots to try, you

wont want to miss this one. Many of the restaurants o er come back coupons as well, so when you nd a place you love, youll likely have a coupon to make it all the better.

Another new feature this year is a canned food drive to bene t the Jacobs-Cushman San Diego Food Bank. Taste attendees who bring a canned food item to donate are entered in a drawing for gift certi cates from restaurants in the area (you do not need to be present to win), so bring along a can of tuna or chili to be sure you are entered.

If you havent done it yet, mark your calendar for the 23rd, and get down to buy your tickets now; remember, there are only 500 available and this event sells out every year. See you at the Taste of Morena!

    Visit www.exploremorena.com for more information.

    HAPPY EASTER!

IN THE COMMUNITY: On March 3rd, CC News publisher Janet Poutr participated in a special event at Sequoia Elementary school. As part of a nationwide Read Across America celebration honoring Dr. Seuss she read Green Eggs and Ham to Mrs. Harris 3rd grade class. The book sparked a lively discussion about what other green foods there are and which were the students favorites. Seems there are some avocado fans in the class!

Craft Beer & Pub Grub: OBriens is Tried and True

Y You know how you have that tee shirt that youve worn for years, its a little rumpled but still feels good every time you put it on? The one you keep wearing even though your signi cant other tries to get you to don something more stylish? OBriens

Pub is kind of like that shirt.OBriens, at 4646 Convoy St. in Kearny Mesa, is one of the citys oldest

and coziest craft beer bars. While there are lots of newer spots that might have better dcor, nicer xtures, tastier food, a more-attractive clientele or other advantages, OBriens is still a great place to spend an afternoon or evening.

As the name suggests, OBriens is a bit of an Irish pub, with green walls and chairs, dart boards, Harp and Guinness on draft, an unfortunate tendency to show soccer games on its TVs and signs with barroom homilies like Save the Earth, its the only planet with beer or There will be a $5 charge for whining.

But its really more a craft beer bar than anything else. There are 28 taps and, aside from the aforementioned Harp and Guinness, all are dedicated to good beers, whether theyre from local breweries, other U.S. cities or Belgium.

OBriens has longstanding relationships with many of the top craft breweries and always has good stu available. It usually has Russian Rivers famed Pliny the Elder and/or Blind Pig on tap, as well as fresh kegs from Alpine Beer Co. If you know craft beer, you know these are good o erings.

If youre new to craft beer or are otherwise unsure what to order, ask bar manager Tyson Blake for help and youll be in good hands. Few people are better at explaining a given beers characteristics. Tell him what you like or the kind of beer youre looking for, and he will pour you a couple tasters to help you decide.

OBriens serves lunch and dinner with a menu thats heavy on pub

grub. I dont go out of my way to eat here, but the food is good enough and certainly helps soak up some of the delicious beer on hand.

The menu includes three kinds of French fries regular, garlic parmesan and beer-battered plus jalapeno poppers, chicken wings, nachos, burgers, sandwiches, soups and, yes, salads. It also has self-serve, all-you-can drink soda and tea for $1.25, which is nice if youre the designated driver.

The pub has a smallish bar with about eight stools and about a dozen tables inside. Some complain about the green pleather, low-pro le, swivel chairs on wheels, but I think theyre comfortable.

There is a large patio outside with more tables and (plastic) chairs, but beware that smoking is allowed and this place draws people who still like to pu cigars. The smoke can sometimes be hard to escape.

OBriens regularly has special beer tappings that can draw huge numbers of beer geeks, but its day-to-day crowd features a lot of regulars who work or live nearby. Many have been coming for years (and years) and its not uncommon to see a bartender whos ending her shift give folks hugs on her way out the door.

Its fun to go to new places and try new things, but OBriens is a pub Ive enjoyed for years, and expect to enjoy for years to come.

Part of enjoying craft beer is making sure everyone arrives home safely. If you are drinking, designate a sober driver, call a cab or use a service such as Uber or Lyft. New Uber users can get a $20 discount on a ride by using promo code mqgae.

    DISTRICT 6 UPDATE

From the office of Lorie Zapf

Hello Clairemont! Spring is o cially here in San Diego, and its time for spring events and a little spring cleaning at City Hall. I was honored to participate in CicloSDias at the very end of last month, and even partnered with other Councilmembers to use our o ce budgets to help put on the event. These events will be held periodically throughout the year in di erent parts of the City, and are aimed at promoting more bikeable and walkable communities. The rst event was held last year in North and South Park, and the rst one this year was down the hill in Paci c Beach. Im hoping we can host one of these events in Clairemont sometime soon! For more information on CicloSDias, and to nd out about the next one, you can go to http://ciclosdias.com/

Springtime at City Hall also means the start of the budget season. I will be submitting my budget requests to Mayor Faulconer in the coming weeks, and I want to hear from you on what your priorities are. Extended hours at our libraries or recreation centers? More police o cers patrolling our neighborhood? Bike racks at City buildings? Adding or increasing street sweeping? These are your tax dollars, and they should be used to impact what is most important to our neighborhood. Please take a few minutes this month to email me your budget suggestions to [email protected]. Im looking forward to working with Mayor Faulconer on a balanced budget that will improve neighborhood services and public safety.

B Beginning April 1st (no, this is not an April Fools Joke), tickets for the 18th Annual Clairemont Garden Tour will be available online at GardenTour.

ClairemontOnline.com.Online ticket prices will be: $12 for general

admission, and $10 for Seniors (55+). However, tickets sold in-person and day-of will be $15. So, if you want tickets at a better price, please purchase them online in advance!

A key feature of our previous tours has been the Garden Tour Expo which will be held at the Energy Innovation Center (EIC) at 4760 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., San Diego, CA 92117.

The Expo will include booths from our Garden Tour sponsors and will feature a cooking demonstration by Chef Palma sponsored by the Clairemont Produce Cooperative, and workshops in the EICs demonstration kitchen, residential smart home, California friendly landscaping, and rain water catchment/grey water recycling. At 3pm, there will be a reception and awards for the best garden and visitor favorite will be presented.

So, what does the Clairemont Town Council do with the money raised through ticket sales? It all goes right back into our Clairemont community via Town Council grants throughout the year. If you would like to volunteer for this years tour, please e-mail Ingrid Terpening, our 2014 Garden Tour Chair, at [email protected].

Our next Town Council general meeting will be held April 3rd at 7:00pm inside the Cadman Elementary cafeteria (4370 Kamloop Avenue, San Diego, CA 92117).

At our April 3rd meeting, we will hear a quick update from our Clairemont librarians representing the three branches at Balboa, Clairemont, and North Clairemont by Town Square. Also, we will host informational presentations on 2-1-1 San Diego, and on the Barrio Logan Initiative -- the latter of which will be on the June Primary Election ballot as Propositions B and C. Finally, we will be voting to ll a Director-at-Large vacancy on our Board.

For our May 1st meeting, the Clairemont Town Council, the Clairemont Chamber of Commerce, and the Morena Business Association will co-host a City Council Candidate Forum featuring the top candidates running in Districts 2 and 6 moderated by Janet Poutre. We are soliciting district-speci c and citywide questions to be asked. If youd like to submit a question, please visit our website: ClairemontOnline.com If you prefer you can mail your question to: P.O. Box 17793, San Diego, CA 92177-7793 or call 858-480-9430.

This is a luncheon meeting with ordering from the menu.

Being able to discuss politics with like-minded women is a treat for Republican women. We have worked on community projects throughout the year such as providing Christmas for our military families, providing needed items for the womens shelters, dictionaries to schools, Constitution workshop, and more. Have you discovered Clairemont Co ee yet? One of the coolest things about the cafe at 3095 Clairemont Dr., besides their delicious organic co ee, is the art on the walls. The co ee shop

has been displaying the works of local artists since it opened late last summer, giving the interior a great individual look, nothing like the corporate co ee chains we see everywhere.

If you are intrigued by art, or perhaps saw some of the paintings on display then you will be happy to hear of a new venture for the shop: Co ee with the Artist. On three Saturday mornings from 9am-11am Clairemont artist Joseph Metcalf will be painting live in the shop and chatting with patrons about his art. A selection of his paintings is presently hanging in the caf. If you have always wondered how artists come up with their ideas, or you are interested in trying painting yourself and have some questions, come over to Clairemont Co ee on March 29th, April 5th and April 12th and ask Joseph to share his thoughts while he paints.

Have Coffee with the Artist at Clairemont Coffee

One of the things he will no doubt be thinking about is the Clairemont photo contest he has come up with. Joseph is inviting anyone and everyone to submit a photo of their favorite Clairemont landscape: maybe that view from the end of your block, or a neighbors front yard when the roses are blooming. If its a photo of an outdoor spot you love in Clairemont, submit it to the contest on Facebook.com/clairemontco ee1. You can also vote there for the ones you think are the best of the photos submitted by clicking Like on your favorites. The one with the most Likes will win. The prize? Joseph will use the winning photo image to create a painting which will beautify a utility box in the community.

The winner will be announced at an evening reception and art show on Thursday April 17th from 5-8pm. There will be co ee tasters, giveaways, food and music. Joseph Metcalf will announce the o cial winner of the photo contest, and the winning image will be on display. All are invited to stop in and see the winning image and meet the artist who will transform it into a public work of art in Clairemont!

Hello Readers,Im happy to introduce our new contributor, Dimitri Panagopoulos, LL.M. Dimitri is

an attorney and the founding shareholder of Panagopoulos Embry P.C., a local law rm that provides legal representation and legal counseling to individuals, businesses and families. The rm is an active member of the Clairemont Chamber of Commerce. Dimitri holds an LL.M. , an advanced law degree beyond a Juris Doctorate, with an emphasis on representing small business owners. He has served on the advisory board for the San Diego County Bar Associations Business and Corporate Law Section and has published various articles related to business and corporate law in the associations publication Bar Report.

Dimitri will be writing an Ask the Expert feature for the CC News, focused each month on a legal question of general interest. If you would like to submit a question for consideration, send an e mail to [email protected]. Space limitations prevent using all questions submitted; thank you for your understanding.

I am considering starting a business. Should I organize as an LLC, a Corporation, or a Sole Proprietor?

Choosing which form of entity will vary depending on the kind of business, the potential liabilities to the owners for the businesses activities, the anticipated revenue, the number of owners and the

way the business is funded. For example, the LLC and the Corporation are entity forms that limit the

owners personal risk for the business liabilities. In both, generally, the risk is limited to their capital contribution, or how much money they put into the company. That means if the company gets sued or incurs a liability, the creditor will generally not be able to look to the owners personal assets (such as a home) for recovery. Contrast this with doing business as a sole proprietor, where there is no legal distinction between the business and its owner when it comes to the business liabilities.

Thats why the starting point is to meet with legal counsel to review the tax implications and liability risks in your situation. Of equal importance, if there will be more than one owner, is that you have proper documentation in place that re ects the true agreement between or amongst the owners regarding the management of the business, the agreement as to sharing pro ts and losses, and an exit plan in the event one or more of the owners must withdraw from the business for one reason or another.

By sitting down with legal counsel before you jump into business, you will be able to discuss these various concerns, and plan and protect your business to optimize your chances for success. As Benjamin Franklin very precisely articulated, An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

The above is intended as general legal information and opinion of Dimitri Panagopoulos, a licensed attorney admitted to practice in all California State Courts, the U.S. Tax Court, and the United States District Courts, Southern and Central Districts of California; and is provided for academic use. Anyone with a legal matter is encouraged to discuss their speci c concerns with an attorney of their choice. On The Mesa:Summer Session is Back at San Diego Mesa College

SSan Diego Mesa College will o er more than 450 classes this summer welcome news

for current and incoming students who want to get a jump on fall, to catch up on a rigorous subject, or to explore a topic that doesnt t in their regular academic year schedule. Currently enrolled university students may also be eligible to ful ll lower-division general education requirements.

Summer sessions at Mesa College consist of the primary eight-week session, beginning May 27; six- and ve-week sessions will also be o ered. The short sessions o er an intense, fast-paced period of study. Student support services departments, such as counseling and career and transfer assistance will also be open during the summer.

Registration for currently enrolled and primary registration begins May 12. Active duty military, veterans who were

discharged within the past 15 years, and current or former foster youth may be eligible for priority registration. For information, call 619-388-2805.

The summer schedule will be posted online on April 15th. Open registration begins May 27. Students are encouraged

to apply and register online as early as possible at http://schedule.sdccd.edu/.

For the rst time since 2009, the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) will o er an extensive schedule of classes for the summer session at City, Mesa, Miramar colleges and San Diego Continuing

Education (CE). The return of the summer session (actually several sessions during the summer months) is primarily due to the restoration of public education funding in California following voter approval of Proposition 30 in November 2012.

Over 100 math, biology and chemistry courses will be offered this summer at Mesa. Science and math classes will be held in the new Math+Science Complex, the largest instructional facility in all of 107 California community colleges.
