UPCOMING EMERGENCY RESPONSE EXERCISE 15 JUNE 2012

Thales would like to advise the local Mulwala and Yarrawonga community that it plans to conduct an emergency response exercise on Friday 15 June at its Mulwala site. This is a routine exercise to enable employees to test the site’s emergency response mechanisms.

The emergency response exercise will be carried out in collaboration with local emergency service agencies. Fire fighters, law enforcement, emergency medical personnel, site emergency response teams, security officials, hospitals, and others will all be responding to the staged emergency, making this an outstanding opportunity to test our combined response plan. Exercise activities will occur throughout the day. There may be controlled smoke or loud noises to make the exercise more realistic for participants, the site siren may also be running during the exercise so please do not be alarmed. You may also see emergency response vehicles travelling to the site. Unless the vehicles are using lights and sirens, they are training exercise participants and are not responding to an actual emergency.Thales is committed to upholding the highest safety standards and communicating extensively with the Mulwala and Yarrawonga community, and this exercise is a necessary part of that ongoing commitment.

For more information on this exercise, please visit: www.mulwalacommunitysafety.com.au

Following two fires in two weeks involving electric blankets, CFA is reminding Victorians of the dangers of leaving them on for long periods or failing to check them for faulty wiring.

On Wednesday morn-ing a Numurkah man was lucky to escape serious injury or death when he woke to find that his bed had caught fire after leav-ing his electric blanket switched on throughout the night. The incident came just a week after a faulty electric blanket caused a house fire in Nag-ambie when the house was unattended.

CFA Operations Of-ficer Rob Van Dorsser said when electric blankets were left on throughout the night heat becomes concentrated in areas where your body creates pressure.

“Even a cat sleeping on the bed during the day may create enough heat to start a fire if an electric blanket is on. You should never leave electric blankets on for more than 30 minutes at a time and always follow the manufacturer’s instruc-tions,” he said.

Mr Van Dorsser also urged residents to check electric blankets that had been stowed away in cup-boards during the warmer months.

“If you’ve had an elec-tric blanket folded up over summer, then they need

to be checked. The wires will have bends or kinks in them and that’s what will cause electrical problems. Stop using your electric blanket immediately if it shows any signs of being faulty such as producing heat spasmodically,” he said. “The risk just isn’t worth it - get the blanket checked or buy yourself a new one.”

Electric blanket and heater fires almost always started at night and recent incidents have underlined the need to have a work-ing smoke alarm in every bedroom where people are sleeping.

“The severe cold is now here. We’ve seen frosts in the morning which will continue through the weekend, so now is the time to focus on the kind of precautions that will protect your home and family,” Mr Van Dorsser said.

To stay safe from fire at home:

· Never smoke in bed· Before going to bed,

switch off heaters and put out fires

· Switch off electric blan-kets when you go to bed

· Never leave electrical appliances on bedding

· Only used certified electrical tradespeople to repair electrical applianc-es, wiring and equipment.

On a Friday lunchtime at Yar-rawonga College P-12 there’s the usual football, chatting and socialising going on – and a live music perform-ance.

It might seem out of the ordinary, but for the YC P-12 secondary campus stu-dents enjoying music per-formed by their peers has become a welcome regular feature of their school ex-perience.

Live at Lunch is an infor-mal showcase of students who are involved in the school’s successful music program.

Music teacher Alex O’Connor said the regular lunchtime concerts gave

students a chance to work on their skills, impress with their talent and get a taste for performing.

“For our VCE music stu-dents live performance is an important component of their assessment,” he said. “We started using the Live at Lunch forum as a way of giving those stu-dents a chance to work on their performance skills in preparation for their formal assessments. Since then it has been embraced by mu-sic students from year seven right through to year 12 and has become a great way to show the strength of our music program.”

The Live at Lunch per-formances range from

acoustic through to full band accompaniment and also utilise the skills of sen-ior students studying music production who assist with equipment and sound.

The appreciation for live performance begins with music teacher and well-known local performer Daine Runnalls who works with students at the YC P-12 primary campus.

“Daine spends time at the primary campus every week giving those younger students a taste of the music program and an opportu-nity to get involved,” Alex said. “As a result we’ve got kids coming to the second-ary campus who are really keen to take up the option of instrumental music les-sons, or vocal lessons and get involved in the program we have to offer.”

Alex O’Connor and fel-low teacher Tim Phillips have been instrumental in establishing the music program at YC P-12. With both coming from an indus-try/teaching background they’ve been able to pool their skills to make the pro-gram a success.

“Thankfully when Tim and I started here six years ago we were on the same page about what the music program was lacking and what we wanted to achieve,” Alex said. “Thanks to great support from the school we’ve been able to build up the program and now we’re seeing kids we started with in year seven doing year 12 and achieving great things.”
