Unfortunately the rain in the afternoon did adversely affect the crowd at the Bull Ride. Overall though, it was a great day. Competitors and exhibitors came from far and wide to contribute to the spectacle of the Show. Thank you one and all. Country shows are well and truly alive.

A large crowd witnessed great South Burnett Rugby League Grand Finals played in Murgon between Wondai, Cherbourg, Kingaroy, Murgon and Nanango. The games started at 10.00 am with junior league finals, women exhibition matches, the under 18s final between Nanango and Murgon and the senior game between Kingaroy and Wondai finishing well into the dark under floodlights. The Score in the A grade game sea sawed back and forth and ended in extra time being played to settle the winner. The game could have been won by either side. We must congratulate the organizers and volunteers who made the day a great success. A special word of praise from a former president, keep going girls you are doing a fantastic job I couldn’t believe the number of positions you hold. STEADY EDDY AND MATES HEADING TO WONDAI TO BENEFIT KIDSIt’s on again – October 24 – a great night of laughter and socialising in support of Wheatlands P&C – it’s the Wondai

Comedy Night. This is the second year The Comedy Empire from Brisbane will bring a group of professional comedians to Wondai

to tickle the funny bones of the audience at Wondai Hall. Steady Eddy will be the headline performer but there will be laughs aplenty with Joel Bryant, Ting Lim, Aaron Pratt and Ashwin Segkar all standing in the spotlight with their stand-up comedy performances.

Steady Eddy needs no introduction – the Australian comic icon’s career began over 20 years ago, and he has won countless awards and appeared on stage both in Australia and overseas. The supporting comics each have their own achievements that include being finalists in Australia’s top comedy competitions, performing at major comedy festivals and supporting some of Australia’s big name comics.

Last year’s audience members commented “awesome night”, “lots of laughs”, “absolute blast”, “can’t wait til next year” – this year’s line-up of comics is sure to provoke the same response. it’s a shame every town in Australia doesn’t have the same thing with the same local support - you guys were awesome and I know the comics are pumped for this one too”.

After 5 years of fundraising, last year’s Wondai Comedy Night gave the bank account of Wheatlands P&C the final boost it needed to purchase the “spider-web” playground equipment.

Tickets for the Wondai Comedy Night can be purchased for $40 at Murgon Paint and Panel, Wondai Pharmacy or phone 0400 045 366. Finger food is included in the ticket price. A bar will be operating and DJ til late, with buses running from/to Murgon and Proston.

A newly ordained young priest complained to his older, more experienced colleague that he had difficulty getting his congregation’s attention when the time came for his sermon. The older priest told him that he had a sure-fire way of grabbing their attention and explained.‘When I first stood up to preach, I gazed out over the congregation and said – ‘The happiest times in my life were spent in the arms of a beautiful woman!’ Then after a short pause – during which time I promise you I had their full attention I added, ‘My Mother.’The young priest thought this an admirable idea and rehearsed it over in front of the mirror, hoping he wouldn’t forget it before he fronted up to his flock the following Sunday. At the designated time, he strode to the pulpit and, trying desperately hide his nerves he spoke – ‘The happiest times in my life were spent in the arms of a beautiful woman!’ The congregation shocked, was all ears. After the required pause, the young priest started to blush, then stammered, ‘but for the life of me, I can’t remember who it was!’

CENTENARY CELEBRATIONSMurgon and surrounding areas will celebrate 100 Years of the Murgon Lutheran Church on the 10th October

2015. When the Murgon District was opened up for settlement in March 1906, settlers from Fassifern and Lockyer

Districts were among those who first selected land in the rich scrub country in and about Cloyna. Cloyna was classed as the Mother congregation of the Murgon Parish. Cloyna opened on 22nd June 1911 and closed on 6th December 1970 when members sought membership with Murgon.

Mondure opened on 19th May 1912 and the last service was conducted in the church on Good Friday (March 24th) 1967. Some became members of Wondai, others joined Murgon.

Kathy’s CommentsMurgon & Proston PoolsBoth Murgon and Proston Pools are being upgraded prior to the planned opening date of October 12th. The Education Department is funding over $200,000 to fix some major issues that have been an ongoing concern for the Proston Pool. The Murgon Pool is on track with over one million dollars being spent from a Sport & Rec Grant and Council’s contribution. The Murgon pool will have a similar number of change rooms to the original facility. The cubicles will be separated for each individual and will be unisex. There will be some disabled facilities and some outside showers for added convenience.Rail Trail UpdateFigures on the Linville to Blackbutt rail trail are looking positive for the success of the Murgon to Kingaroy Rail Trail. In Blackbutt over the last 341 days there have been 11,507 registrations which is an average of 33.7 visitors per day. The injection of income into the economy has been conservatively estimated at $246,010 per annum. Information gathered from businesses along the Great Victorian Rail Trail and the Murray to Mountain corridor is also positive with business owners in small towns along these trails proclaiming that it has turned their towns around. The biggest users on the Victorian trails are families and retirees and the main activity is cycling. Our Council is working on making up a similar product to “Chert” which is name of the material that has been a great success in Victoria. It is a low maintenance gravel surface. We are working in partnership with Gympie Regional Council who has a share of the Grant money to complete their section from the Murgon boundary to Kilkivan. Our allocation of funding from the State Government will cover the cost of the surface upgrade from Murgon to Kingaroy including the bridges and any necessary signage. We will not be fencing the corridor as it is beyond the limitations of the budget. The cost of ongoing maintenance has been considered in the design and we are working on opportunities to minimise future maintenance costs. There won’t be any horses from Murgon to Kingaroy to avoid issues with tick infestations. Motor bikes will be prohibited under Council’s Local Laws. The grant money can only be used on the rail trail and the State Government is allocating it in stages with the final stage of completion due towards the end of next year.Vietnam Veteran’s DayI was honoured and humbled to be the guest speaker at the Vietnam Veteran’s Day at Cherbourg. Eric Law officiated at the Ceremony and explained that he was one of six Vietnam Veterans from Cherbourg. Congratulations to Cherbourg Council and everyone involved in organising this memorable day to honour our soldiers and thank you to the Ration Shed for organising the refreshments.Proston Men’s ShedIt was fantastic to see so many men come along to the first meeting of a Men’s Shed for Proston. Thank you to Paul Pfeffer and the guys from Murgon Men’s Shed for coming along to give advice on how to get started. Congratulations to Richard Green who was elected as President and best wishes to the new Executive. Thank you to Margaret Westerman who helped to organise the day and to all the service providers who came along to offer their support. I know the whole community will get behind this and we wish them every success.Scots in the Bush a Huge SuccessHaggis, bagpipes and tartan were the order of the day at the hugely successful Scots in the Bush at Boondooma Homestead. The numbers are growing rapidly and well done to Buddy & Lynne

and all of the volunteers on another great event for our region.Great stuff from Graham HouseI had the pleasure of popping in to witness a very successful Graham House Open Day. I also had the pleasure of attending the Dinner at the Murgon Bowl’s Club that was catered for locally and served beautifully by the Graham House students who have been part of a Graduating Course organised through Graham House. It was 7 amazing courses also showcasing our amazing local wines.South Burnett & Cherbourg On ShowThe first weekend in October will be an Events Festival for the South Burnett. The major ones for Murgon will be the Heritage Working Day on the Saturday and a Cultural Concert at Yallakool Park on BP Dam on Saturday night. For a full program of events across the whole region check out the website at www.sbconshow.com.au or call in at any of our Visitor Information Centres.Campbell’s Bridge will be Open!!I am delighted to say that Campbell’s Bridge has been included in the program of bridge replacements for this year. We will also be doing the Mondure Bridge over Hansen’s Gully and Weens Bridge near Kumbia. We virtually have secured three bridges for the price of two because everything is so competitive at the moment. These bridges should all be finished by April next year. Contact Details and Meeting OpportunitiesAs always I am working on following up jobs and concerns that have been brought to my attention. Please contact me if you have an issue or wish to make an appointment to meet at your place or at the Murgon Council Office.Cr Kathy Duff (Division 5) South Burnett Regional CouncilPhone 07 41680225 or 0437020705 oremail [email protected]

TRUSS CALLS FOR APPLICATIONS FOR STRONGER COMMUNITIES PROGRAMME Federal Member for Wide Bay and Minister for Infrastructure Warren Truss, today called for applications for

funding from the Federal Coalition Government’s new Stronger Communities Programme (SCP). “Up to $150,000 a year over two years is available to councils and community groups for small capital projects

to benefit communities in Wide Bay,” Mr Truss said. “Eligible applicants can apply for grants of between $5,000 and $20,000. All applications need to commit

matching cash or in-kind contributions. “The SCP is a terrific opportunity for councils and incorporated sporting, service and not for profit organisations

to apply for small grants for projects that will help them to deliver their services to the community. Eligible projects may include: • Construction and fit out of men’s sheds • Fit out of community centres, including kitchen upgrades and equipment purchases • Sporting facilities upgrades including lighting, amenities, and fit outs • Streetscapes and bike paths • SES equipment Organisations should consult the SCP guidelines and the frequently asked questions on the Department of

Infrastructure and Regional Development’s website http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/SCP to determine eligibility. “I encourage organisations interested in bringing forward SCP project proposals to contact my electorate

office on telephone 4121 2936, or the Sunshine Coast, or Wide Bay Burnett Regional Development Australia Committees through the website www.rda.gov.au for further information.” Mr Truss said.

“Applications will be prioritised by a local committee and assessed against the SCP guidelines by the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development to ensure that project proposals offer value for money.”

SCP project proposals should be submitted by email to [email protected] by 30 September 2015.
