    SURVEYING-1 10CV34

    Unit 1:

    1. Distinguish between

    i. Plans and maps

ii. Geodetic surveying and plain surveying

    2. Explain: Topographical surveying and cadastral survey

    3. Discuss the classifications of surveying based on

    a) instruments used

    b) Objective of survey

    c) methods employed

    4. What are the basic principles of surveying? Explain with sketches.

    5. Explain the terms (i) precision (ii) accuracy.

    Unit 2:

    1. Briefly explain

    (i) Types of errors

(ii) Sources of errors in surveying

    2. A measurement was made along a sloping ground at 2045. If the permissible error in

horizontal distance measurement is to be 1 in 15,000, find the accuracy with which the slope

    angle is to be measured.

    3. Explain the construction, use and working of optical line ranger.

    4. List various signals used and their meaning while ranging.

    Unit 3:

    1. Explain the method of reciprocal ranging. When do you need it?.

    2. Distinguish between cumulative and compensating errors. Give a list of such errors.

    3. A 30 m tape used for measuring a line was found to be 30.01 m at the beginning and 30.03

m at the end the work. The area of a a plan drawn to a scale of 1:1000 was found to be 5146

mm2. Compute the correct area of the field.

    Unit 4:

    1. Explain with a neat sketch working of a prismatic compass.

    2. What is local attraction? How is it detected?

    3. What is magnetic declination? List the different types and variation.

    4. Briefly explain the different methods of plotting a compass survey.

    Unit 5:

    1. Explain how closing error in compass survey is adjusted by

    i) Bowditch method

    ii) Graphical method

    2. In a traverse, the length and bearing of the line AE could not be measured directly. For the

following data, compute the length and bearing of AE:

    Line Length Whole circleBearing

    AB 102.5M 261045

    BC 108.7M 900

    CD 92.5 M 282030

    Unit 6:

    1. Define the following terms used in leveling:

    i) Bench Mark ii) Elevation

iii) change point iv) Mean sea level

    2. Write a short note on cross section leveling.

    3. Explain reciprocal leveling

    4. Explain differential leveling.

    5. Mention the errors in leveling.

    SURVEYING-1 10CV34

    Unit 7:

    1. The following staff readings were observed successively with a level. The instrument has

been moved after the second, fifth and eighth readings.

    0.675, 1.230, 0.750, 2.565, 2.225, 1.935, 1.835, 3.220, 3.115 and 2.875.

The first staff reading was taken with staff held on a benchmark of RL 100.000. Enter the

readings in a level book and calculate the RLs of all the points. Also apply the arithmetic

check. Use height of instrument method.

    2. Define the terms:

    i) Contour lines ii) Contour interval

iii) Horizontal equivalent iv) contour gradient

    3. What is contour interval? Explain the factors to be considered in the selection of contour

    interval.

    4. What is indirect contouring? Explain one of the methods.

    5. What is interpolation of contours? Explain any two methods of interpolation.

    Unit 8:

    1. Explain the two methods of orientation of plane table.

    2. Define the following terms used in plane table surveying

    i. Radiation ii. Intersection iii. Orientation

    3. Explain clearly strength of Fix in plane tabling. What are its applications?
