Within the Züblin Group, Sub-Division Civil Engineering North is the competence centre for civil and hydraulic engineering in the German states of Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Lower Saxony, Bremen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt. In other European countries, we also operate in the Benelux states, Scandinavia, the United Kingdom (UK) and along the coastal regions of the North and Baltic Seas. With our approximately 550 employees – including highly qualified specialists in port, bridge, formwork and masonry construction –, we successfully realise everything from small assignments all the way to large infrastructure projects of international importance. For the proper technical realisation of complex construction projects, Sub-Division Civil Engineering North has a large fleet of specialty equipment at its disposal (e.g. jack-up rigs, pontons, tugboats, pushers, flexifloat barges and a crane barge), all of which is also available for hire.

But our reputation also extends beyond the field of civil engineering and marine works. For many decades Züblin Chimney and Refractory GmbH has been an established player and international expert in chimney and refractory engineering, covering everything from design and engineering to new construction, reconstruction and modernisation as well as delivery and assembly.

Partnering ContractsWe see partnering contracts as more than just a business model – we see them as the foundation for our working relationship. The higher the standards required of a complex construction project, the higher the demands put on the participating teams.

It is our goal to always realise projects from design to completion to the satisfaction of all involved, in terms of quality, scheduling and costs, regardless of the contract model (VOB, FIDIC, ABT, Design & Build, Züblin teamconcept, etc.).

One model for project partnering that has proved its worth for more than 20 years is the Züblin teamconcept, developed in house and successfully applied in a number of different projects.

7Partnering Contracts/Integrated Quality Management

Integrated Quality Management (IQM)In 1993, Ed. Züblin AG became one of the fi rst companies in the construction industry to introduce a quality management system. The system, based on DIN EN ISO 9001, continuously integrates matters of quality management, occupational safety and health protection (SCC** and OHSAS 18001), environmental protection (DIN EN ISO 14001 and EMAS), energy management and risk management and guides these processes to certifi cation. It almost goes without saying that other specifi cations, e. g. KTA 140 (nuclear facilities) or future management systems, also have a place here.

Our IQM system has a modular design. The Group Management Manual and other group guidelines are complemented by national and organisational rules to standardise the processes for all group divisions and to make them easier to follow. Special matters pertaining to specifi c entities complete the documentation. The system is continuously tested and improved using the PDCA four-step method. This allows Züblin to build quality structures safely and to the fullest satisfaction of the client.

Within Sub-Division Civil Engineering North, Business Unit North/West is the central point of contact for all work relating to civil engineering and marine works projects in the German states of Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Saxony-Anhalt.

The business unit handles projects as diverse as port facilities, quays and coastal protection structures, bridges, barrages and locks, and heavy industry construction. We are also active in the on-premise contracting business for large, big-name companies in Hamburg and will assume all tasks related to “day-to-day” operations. We support our clients in this regard to conduct their new construction and renovation works as well as their repairs with as little disruption to operations as possible.

For all the above-mentioned tasks, our Business Unit North/West can rely on highly qualified industrial workers and office staff with access to the extensive Sub-Division Civil Engineering North equipment fleet. Altogether, this is the perfect foundation for the economical realisation of quality projects to the satisfaction of our clients.

Sub-Division Civil Engineering North has access to about 80 items of large equipment to handle marine works sites, including a variety of nautical equipment, barges, pile drivers and vibratory hammers with the necessary accessories.

Business Unit Plant and Equipment schedules the availability of this specialty equipment and manages the storage locations in Hamburg, Geesthacht and Cuxhaven. We also support the group’s operating units in matters of bid processing, work planning and project execution.

Our offices are located at the group headquarters in the Dancing Towers in Hamburg. Business Unit Plant and Equipment is supported by the BMTI Marine Works Competence Centre in Geesthacht with its steel fabrication and machine shop.

The Central Office of Sub-Division Civil Engineering North consists of various service depart-ments which support the individual operating units within the sub-division in matters ranging from project acquisition and completion to the management of warranties.

The available specialist departments – Estimation, Work Planning and Purchasing – are located in various locations within the sub-division’s range of operation.

Their goal is to advise the various business units, to acquire orders, to minimise risks in the bidding and project execution phases, and to offer consulting services to the construction team regarding the materials and services needed.

The Central Technical Division bundles the group’s technical competence. Services are offered to the entire group and include ground civil engineering, tunnelling, structural engineering, turnkey construction and construction process management.

The approximately 35 employees at the Technical Office Hamburg support Sub-Division Civil Engineering North in the fields of port construction and hydraulic steel structures, civil engineering and industrial construction. The range of services covers the entire construction process from the acquisition phase to bid processing to work planning.

It is our goal to provide planning support adapted to the needs and demands of the construction team. Creative and economical solutions contribute to the project success. The Technical Office stands out for its expert competence and the high quality of its planning services.
