NOVEMBER 2016

Thanksgiving. With November, we enter our nation’s traditional period of thanksgiving. Frankly, we have much to be thankful for, but with hectic schedules, we often forget to tell our neighbors, friends

and loved ones (1) that we appreciate them, (2) how much we appreciate them, and (3) why we appreciate them.

As our community’s Mayor, I appreciate our Shavano Park team. We are blessed to be served by an amazingly great group of city employees, and personally, I believe that our community enjoys the serves of the most talented City Manager in this part of Texas. City Manager Bill Hill and his team do a wonderful job in serving our community and in turn each of us.

I also appreciate the many citizens of our community who set aside personal time to serve on our committees and most specifically those who organize, implement and manage our four community events. Each of you breathes life into the community oriented nature of Shavano Park – just a few of these very special persons are Betty Bozeman, Nancy Bula, and Kim Lane. Thank you for blessing our community.

As a final group of neighbors, I want to thank all the neighbors who attended or hosted National Night Out activities. At City Hall, we had roughly 250 participants, and at the 14 host homes, we had over 400 participants. The 14 families opening their homes for National Night Out were Dee/Charlie Brame, Jean/Tom Countryman, Kathy/Tim Fandel, Donna/Ken Flores, Carol Growney, Wayne/Cynthia Harwell, Glenda/Ron Johnston, Nicole/Clyde Lehmann, Ellen/Kirk Marchand, Nancy/Eddie Ogden, Suzanne/Dave Smith, Barbara/Mike Simpson, MJ/AD Smoot, and Felice/Leif Zars. The folks at City Hall and each household shared wonderful hospitality. Each household member, the neighbors who worked with them and their visitors are worthy of our gratitude and thanks.

With the season of thanksgiving, I challenge each of you to express your appreciation to loved ones, friends and neighbors. Perhaps our community can renew something old by recognizing the virtue in others and learning to look beyond individual foibles.

Fire Safety Poster Contest. For citizens without a neighborhood event, our community hosted a wonderful get together at City Hall. Children of all ages enjoyed face painting, our Fire Department’s Fire Training Course, the opportunity for excellent food and tasty shaved ice and the display of almost 140 posters from Blattman Elementary and Clark High School Applied Learning Environment (ALE) students. The judging decisions were very difficult.

The winners were as follows:Grand Prizewinner: Viana Hajvaziri

For the grand prizewinner from Blattmann, our fire department will sponsor a party at Blattman, and for our ALE participants, our fire department will provide the ALE students with a personal tour of a fire truck in October/November. Additionally, Martin Marietta provided gift card prize to the Grand Prize winner.

I want to thank each of the participants for their efforts. Seeing the many posters at City Hall was inspiring. To me, the City Hall poster display captured our community’s support for area students, teachers and schools. Here is a hearty well done to all the students and my thanks to our fire department for making this possible. As a final note, kudos to Karen Pumphrey (Clark High School ALE program) and the teachers/administrators at Blattman Elementary for their wonderful poster contest support.

Holiday Festival. On December 3rd, we encourage each family to participate in our annual Shavano Park Holiday Festival. Last year, hundreds of children and adults shared the joy of the season, and this year promises to be even better. Please mark your calendars - the event will start at noon and end with the Christmas Tree Lighting at dusk. Activities will include:

• Annual tree lighting,

• Arts and crafts,

• Games,

• Holiday/food vendors,

• Balloons,

• Face painting,

• Music,

• Blattman choir, and

• More.

Kids from one to 92 and well-behaved pets can look forward to Old St. Nicholas joining us for photo opportunities. Please be on the lookout for a postcard on this wonderful community event. As always, our community events are for all ages. Please mark your calendar to share the good spirits of the holiday season with your neighbors on December 3rd.

As always, I look forward to meeting with you and receiving your calls. If you ever have a care, concern or comment, please call me at 210-867-0441.

Updates of Interest

OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER:

National Night Out. I’ve participated in four City of Shavano Park National Night Out events and last month’s event was the best. There were 14 planned neighborhood block parties, which was an increase from the 12 last year and the City Hall event enjoyed the biggest crowd yet. The one thing that stuck me most during my visits to the neighborhood block parties was the number of new residents that had just moved in and were participating and getting to know their neighbors – now that’s exactly what is supposed to happen. Life is good in Shavano Park!

Bulk Trash Pick Up. I’m sure that you noticed the delay in bulk trash pick-up in October. Several factors in other cities scheduled before us contributed to the delay. Compounding the situation is the fact that many people place bulk trash out a week or two in advance of the scheduled pickup. The results were parts of our

neighborhoods that were not attractive for an extended period. I’m in coordination with Republic Services to determine a better way to approach this situation in the future.

Volunteers Needed. See page 8 for request for volunteers to install rain garden on Nov. 5th at City Hall.

ISO Rating. Effective November 1st 2016, the City’s new ISO rate of 2 will go into effect. This places Shavano Park in the top 2% of 49,010 of fire protection ratings nationwide. My check with my insurance carrier indicates with better ISO scores some home owners might qualify for a home owner’s insurance discount and they are already crediting us with the 2 rating. Any discount usually becomes effective at the annual policy renewal.

2016 National Night Out was a great opportunity for residents and law enforcement to partner up against crime. The weather was cool on the evening of October 4, and 435 adults, 92 kids, and 10 dogs came outside to visit with their neighbors in the front yard or drive way at 14 block parties in neighborhoods throughout the City. Hot dogs on the grill, pizza, pot-luck, bar-b-que, ice cream sundaes, and brownies were just a few of the tasty dishes shared by the residents while visiting with their neighbors and meeting the new residents. Some of the block parties had games and invited kids to bring their skate boards. Shavano Park Police and Fire Fighters/EMS visited with all the residents and children at the block parties, and some of the children had a chance to climb on the fire truck and to visit with McGruff crime dog.

Shavano Park Police placed NNO banners at entrances to the different communities. Neighborhood WATCH provided the neighborhood hosts with a NNO banner for the yard, supplies, and some whistles to give away. We thank all who participated and supported National Night Out (NNO) and its’ efforts to “partner

with law enforcement, heighten crime awareness, generate support in crime prevention efforts, and strengthen neighborhood spirit and community relations.” NNO hosts were: Kathy & Tim Fandel; Nicole & Clyde Lehmann; Jean & Tom Countryman; MJ & AD Smoot; Suzanne & Dave Smith; Karen & Allen Leitko; Ellen & Kirk Marchand; Susan & Bill Schaffer; Donna & Ken Flores; Dana & Tim Orihel; Felice & Leif Zars; Glenda & Tom Bibb; Barbara & Mike Simpson; Carol Growney; Heidi Johnson; Dee & Charlie Brame; Liz & Itzhak Reichman: Dagne Florine & John Cole; Glenda & Ron Johnston; Cynthia & Wayne Harwell; Nancy & Eddie Ogden and Etta & Bob Fanning. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped at the block parties. We thank our Shavano Park Police and Fire Fighters for their positive work in our community. National Night Out is always the first week of October, so please join us next year, and consider hosting a block party for your street. Thanks to all Neighborhood WATCH volunteers. It’s fun and together we make our community safer.

Neighborhood WATCH is a pro-active crime prevention program, and all residents are invited to get involved. To participate in Neighborhood WATCH please contact Etta Fanning, Coordinator, at [email protected]/ Ph: 210-493-8758.

Neighborhood WATCH is an organized group of volunteers who agree together to keep an observant eye on the neighborhood, and to report any suspicious activity to 911.

Neighborhood WATCH is registered with National Neighborhood WATCH – a division of the National Sheriffs’ Association.

Lock Take HideAs the holiday season approaches, our thoughts will soon turn to all the various trips to shopping locations in the area, making the rounds and purchasing items. As we do so, please keep in mind that this is also the time of the year that criminals will increase their activity. Finding a vehicle, filled with bags of items visible in the seats, a vehicle left unlocked, and shoppers, loaded down with bags in their arms, trying to find the vehicle remote or key in their pocket or purse, is a golden opportunity for a criminal to strike.

The men and women of the Shavano Park Police Department want to remind each of you to be aware of your surroundings as you are outdoors and in parking areas. Also, please keep the crime tip of LOCK, TAKE, HIDE in mind. Lock, Take, and Hide is an easy 3-step plan that drastically reduces your chances of becoming a victim:

By being aware of the people around you and following these basic steps, you can help reduce your chances of becoming a victim of a crime.

Lock your car doors.

Take your valuables with you. (This includes cell phones, wallets/purses, GPS units, computers, weapons, and jewelry).

Hide those valuables so they aren’t in plain sight.

FROM THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

Residents of Shavano Park, you may have noticed that a number of power poles that have a large red “X" painted on them. CPS Energy will begin replacing poles mid to late 2017. The new poles will be installed close to the existing location. CPS will transfer the utilities to the new pole and remove the old pole

If you have one of these poles in your backyard, you may be contacted by a design firm (TRC). They will need access your property to determine the exact location as well as assess what other utilities are in the area.

Trees that are directly around the pole will be trimmed by CPS Energy contractors. Please watch your monthly Roadrunner and I-INFO for additional information as it becomes available.

HOW TO PREVENTMOSQUITOES!

Adult mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnate or slow moving water, and on moist soil or leaf litter in areas likely to collect water.By eliminating these water sources, you can keep new generations of mosquitoes from taking up residence in your yard.

FACTS

• Nearly one of every three home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems.

• Although Christmas tree fires are not common, when they do occur, they are more likely to be serious.

• A heat source too close to the tree causes roughly one in every four of the fires.

Christmas TreeSafety

As you deck the halls this holiday season, be fire smart. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly.

After ChristmasGet rid of the tree after Christmas or when it is dry. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home. Check with your local community to find a recycling program.

Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.

PICKING THE TREEKKK Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not

fall off when touched.

PLACING THE TREEKKK Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the

base of the trunk.

KKK Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.

KKK Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.

KKK Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.

LIGHTING THE TREEKKK Use lights that are listed by a qualified testing

laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.

KKK Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.

KKK Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.

KKK Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
