the case of the horrific data citizens cal & chris save the day

I waited for the Caltrain for over an hour because I just couldn’t read that confusing

time table! Arrrrrgh!

Page 13: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

You know, Chris, this is alot of

fun, but i need to get going. do you

know when the next Caltrain is?

I haven't the foggiest. Let's

check the schedule!

not long ago...

So, they log onto the Caltrain site...

GADZOOKS!HOW DO THEY EXPECT US TO UNDERSTAND

THIS?

That will never do...plotting a

scheme to improve that

nasty interface...I must

help, too!

And the two of them go off to redesign...

Page 19: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

the TTC goes to camp citizen superheroes strike again!

Page 20: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

The TTc is such a rockin' system,

too bad the website suxor!

...it all starts with a discussion, mostly on blogs, started by Robert Oullette, who says the TTC needs a bit of citizen intervention "barcamp" style...

Well, you know...we really don't have to put up with that. Let's get together with a bunch of

people 'barcamp' style and make some changes!

Page 21: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

Page 22: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

ooooo...pretty cool, but what does this have to do

with transit?

I know what you are thinking...

how does Barcamp become transitcamp?

HEY!Are you reading

my mind?

Sorry...superpowers,

remember?

Page 23: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

Barcamps are characterized by the lack of prescheduling and the phenomenon known as...

Page 24: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

So this guy and a bunch of others put this thing on...

Hi!! I'm Mark Kuznicki and I'm

Passionate about Civic

Engagement!

And there was music...

...now off to find our next citizen superhero!!!

Page 28: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

san diego is burning the multi-citizen hero squad

Page 29: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

As the fires raged around them, citizens with cameras, phones, computers and other technology recorded...

Page 30: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

They reported on everything they could find out so that others could find their loved ones...

Page 31: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

They made maps from data gathered from various sources (mostly other citizens recording openly online)...

Page 32: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

They took over 10,000 photos, many of which were used by news stations...

Page 33: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

...The traditional news outlets have done a fantastic job of sensationalizing the already sensational...If their goal was simply to make me anxious, then job well done...

Fortunately, we have the Internet, with its Web 2.0, open API’s, and several clever people who have been able to assemble some very useful information. Here’s my favorite of the bunch. It’s a Google Map of the San Diego area, with polygons and icons showing the perimeter of the fire at various times throughout the past few days, along with road closings, shelter locations, and other updates.

Page 47: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

ENCOURAGE COLLABORATION

Page 48: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

how to encourage collaboration

1.be a platform (provide APIs - make data available)

Page 49: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

”“A "platform" is a system that can be

programmed and therefore customized by outside developers – users – and in that way, adapted to countless needs and niches that the platform's original developers could not have possibly contemplated, much less had time to accommodate.

–Marc Andreessen, http://blog.pmarca.com/2007/09/the-three-kinds.html talk to us about

stuff like Microformats,

APIs and OpenID

afterwards!

Page 50: Citizen Superheroes (updated for the Executive Institute)

how to encourage collaboration

1.be a platform (provide APIs - make data available)

2.publish everything openly

3.be available

4.embrace the chaos

5.reward contributors

6.show progress

7. take simple, small steps

8.reach out to people from different backgrounds and industries

9.view the public as a partner, not a recipient

10.run real, open betas
