As architects face up to the need for ethical, sustainable design in the age of climate change
awareness, timber architecture is making a comeback in a new, technologically impressive way.
Largely overlooked in the age of Modernism, recent years have seen a plethora of advancements
related to mass timber across the world. This year alone, Japan announced plans for a supertall
wooden skyscraper in Tokyo by 2041, while the European continent has seen plans for the worldโs
largest timber building in the Netherlands, and the worldโs tallest timber tower in Norway.
The potential for mass timber to become the dominant material of future sustainable cities has
also gained traction in the United States throughout 2018. Evolving codes and the increasing
availability of mass timber is inspiring firms, universities, and state legislators to research and
invest in ambitious projects across the country.
The year has seen milestones such as Oregon becoming the first U.S. state to legalize mass timber
high rise buildings, MIT unveiling its technology-driven, prefabricated Longhouse, and the
University of Arkansas beginning construction on the countryโs first large-scale, mass timber higher
education residence hall. The benefits of mass timber were also displayed at the AIA Conference on
Architecture 2018, as part of the โBlueprint for Better Citiesโ theme.
In recognition of the growth and potential of pass timber, we have assembled four projects
currently being researched and conceptualized across the U.S. that are redefining what is possible
with wood. From a bridge in Brooklyn to timber towers across Philadelphia, Chicago, and San
Francisco, the future schemes o๏ฟฝer four in-tree-guing examples of how mass timber might redefine
the skylines of future American cities.

DC Designers led by Sean McTaggart from Hickok Cole were shortlisted for the Skyhive Skyscraper
challenge for the Philly Timber Towers project, demonstrating the viability of the mass timber high-
rise as an alternative to steel and concrete. While in the process of designing the new landmark for
Philadelphiaโs skyline, the group also received a grant to work on a mass timber Ranger Station in
DC.
80-story River Beech Tower in Chicago
Architects at Perkins+Will, working with engineers at Thornton Tomasetti, have conceptualized an
80-story mass timber building in Chicago. The scheme features 300 duplex units using an exterior
diagrid system that leverages the natural axial strength of timber. This concept has been informed
by recent Skidmore, Owings and Merrill Timber Towers research which found that timber-concrete
hybrid systems can support loads of 82,000 pounds (8 times the required load) along with some
steel hybrid systems that could be marketable in terms of bay sizes and floor openings.

Mass Timber Multifamily in San Francisco
Jose Brunner, a designer at DLR Group's San Francisco o๏ฟฝice, designed a modular timber tower
atop a landmark building in San Franciscoโs Mission District for the "Mission: Housing design
competition." The project exploits mass timber's potential as a strong but light-weight material for
alternative development, providing additional housing in the heart of the city without the need to
demolish of existing structures or displace existing residents. Jose Brunner, along with a design
team at DLR Group|Kwan Henmi, collaborated with structural engineering firm, DCI Engineers on
the design of Mission:Housing, a modular timber tower atop a landmark building in San Franciscoโs
Mission District for โPlan B: The City Above the City,โ an international wood building competition
hosted by Metsa Wood.
Timber Bridge at LongPoint Corridor in Brooklyn, NYC
For the past few years, architect Jun Aizaki of CRรME has been working on the Timber Bridge at
LongPoint Corridor; a floating passageway he proposes should be made of wood. Linking Brooklyn
and Queens, the bridge exploits an opportunity to improve pedestrian transit, create green spaces,
and connect the communities of Long Island City and Greenpoint into a new neighborhood coined
"LongPoint."

Mass timber is nothing new and it never went away to be "making a comeback". Structuralglued laminated timber (mass timber) has been continuously made in Peshtigo, Wisconsinsince 1934. The technology dates back to Weimar, Germany and the work of Otto Hetzerabout the year 1890. And of course solid-sawn timber has been utilized by humans forthousands of years. Engineered timber is nothing new. New utilizations come up everynow and again.โณ โฝ

As my opening comment reflected, with excitement for this...NEW...(very old) trendwhen I posted here...I think (most?) readers here understand that traditional timberframing, laminated timber, key-beam, and others systems has been going on (nonstop!!!) for a very long time with some systems for millenia...
Nevertheless, as a working traditional Timberwright myself, your assertion thatthere, "...is nothing new and it never went away..." in regards to CLT (crosslaminated timbers) that is not accurate at all.
The current trend is close to remarkable as more and more architects, city plannersand consumers in general, try to look to the future with more sustainable buildingmodalities. As such, CLT mega structures and buildings over 15 stories tall is verynew (and exciting) to say the least.
Our personal goal, (in progress) is to develop a structure over 12 stories (or more?)that will rest solely on a traditional stone foundation, and be constructed withtraditional timber framing methods without the use of industrialized CLT. This willoffer a different building system to this market that will be both competitive andmore environmentally sustainable than the current industrialized versions of CLT...โณ โฝ

Big picture...I can't be more excited for this new (very old) trend...
I do have a few perspectives that may be outside the common understanding of this trend.Timber architecture has never really been goan. It may have been on hiatus and notcommonly employed in "First World Nations" but it has been here for the last 7000 yearsand commonly employed virtually nonstop. I would also add that many of the"technological impressive" innovations are more about big industry involvement (control?)than it is about...new or better ways...
It has been overlooked by Modernism for many reason, a few mention above.Nevertheless, the hold that the concrete and steel industry has been slipping. Up till now,there has not been a good way for big industry to really get into the "big timber"architecture world until many of the commercial break throughs in CLT manufacturing andforestry monoculture by large industry. Neither of these are actual improvements ortechnological advancements beyond allowing big industry a seat at the table large enoughto push back on the steel and cement industries. This seat may lead to many good thingsbut not necessarily for the better is yet to be determined...
Whether another big industry gains control really isn't important at this juncture, becausethe motivation does seem to be primarily (at this point) to compete with the much lesssustainable and less durable concrete and steel modalities. This trend is here, and thereare more than enough seats at the table for all sorts of methods, both traditional andtechnological to serve the market. There is no doubt that these large timber methods areโBlueprint for Better Citiesโ toda... just as they had been in the acient past...

CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati has merged architecture with urban agriculture in the firm's newly-
unveiled Jian Mu Tower in Shenzhen, China. The 218-meter high building incorporates a large-scale
vertical hydroponic farm across its entire facade, producing vegetation that can feed up to 40,000
people per year. The 51-storey tower will also include housing o๏ฟฝices, a supermarket, and a food
court with inner gardens for recreation and social gatherings.
The Jian Mu Tower was an international competition entry organized by Chinese supermarket
chain Wumart, occupying the last vacant plot in Shenzhenโs Central Business District. The self-
sustaining proposal allows residents to cultivate and consume fresh vegetables and fruits from
within the tower, producing an estimated 270,000 kilograms of food per year. The landscape
terraces also include a wide variety of flora including water lily, fern, and lychee, further promoting
biodiversity.

The name of the tower is derived from the China's ancient mythical symbol of the โjian mu treeโ
which "connects heaven and earth". According to the traditional belief, heaven is round while the
earth is square, and accordingly, the skyscraper translated this belief with its rectangular base that
gradually transforms into a cylindrical form as it rises. The greenery across the buildingโs surface
reduces solar irradiance in indoor spaces and promotes natural ventilation. The terrace gardens are

approaches to agriculture. The company introduced an AI-supported โvirtual agronomistโ system
which handles the farmโs day-to-day operations, irrigation, and nutritional conditions, to optimize
the vegetation production process.

Developer 3Strands and construction company ICON have completed new 3D-printed houses for
sale in the United States, showcasing the possibilities of additive manufacturing for mass-market
housing. Located in Austin, Texas, within a fast-growing neighbourhood, the East 17th St
Residences development is designed by Logan Architecture and comprises four units with 3D-
printed ground floors whose tectonics reflect the construction technology.
The project was first announced earlier this year and was constructed using ICON's proprietary
technology and an "advanced building material", which the company claims to be stronger and
more resilient than conventional ones. The technology is set to provide safer dwellings, better
equipped for withstanding hazards and natural disasters.

The historical Roman town has been busy at work and new exciting buildings, squares, and public
parks have bloomed across the city. Since my first trip to Zรผrich in 2014, a lot has happened around
good old Turicum.
A๏ฟฝer a compelling trip organized by Visit Zรผrich and my friend Philipp Heer, we were able to visit
some of the newest, most interesting and upli๏ฟฝing places of the city. Flitting hither and thither, Roc
Isern, David Basulto, and I enjoyed the privilege of a tailored itinerary, access to Zรผrich's gems, and
perhaps the most inspiring, the architects behind these amazing structures.
If you are tremendously looking forward to a little exploration, Swiss cheese, and white wine,
Zรผrich has plenty of those to o๏ฟฝer.

Description: This massive development occupies the former site of a paper mill near the Sihl river,
which by the way is very cool โ or not depending on your opinion โ with the motorway on top. The
best thing about Sihlcity? The not so obvious corners of the complex: the library, the elevators as

untouched, the interior was transformed into an oval wonder of light and awesomeness. What is
absolutely remarkable is how the structure (integrated as part of the shelves) blends with the old
building to support the new addition of space. The result is as if the new parts were floating in the

Description: Leutschenbach, an area experiencing wild growth, has plenty of o๏ฟฝices and increasing
housing projects. Leutschentower integrates both. This playful and distinctive tall tower boasts
o๏ฟฝices and public areas combined with residential use. Another wonderful project by the same

Description: Haus G is part of a new interesting building cooperative called Mehr als wohnen (More
than housing). The main objective of the district is to transform the way we live and work towards a
more sustainable and ecological approach. The Tetris-like faรงade is the result of oversized living

6. Haus E

Location: Hagenholzstrasse 104, 8050 Zรผrich
Year: 2015
Description: Another interesting block in the Mehr als wohnen cooperative, this photogenic
building by Mรผller Sigrist Architekten is one of many by the firm in the Hunziker-Areal. Located on
the former site of the Hunziker cement factory, Haus G became so distinctive thanks to its living
faรงade. The requirements of the masterplan included the definition of three main elements: the

7. HWO Student Building

Year: 2016
Description: ETH Zurich (Eidgenรถssische Technische Hochschule Zรผrich) is one of the leading
universities in Zรผrich and HWO is one of its recent additions of the Hรถnggerberg campus. HWO,
which consists of three buildings, is also the largest student housing complex in the city. The
psychological approach of the program (grouping activities together) and the energy concept
(green in every possible way) have been thoughtfully arranged both in plan โ 3 individual structures
โ and elevation โ from public on the ground floor to private use on the upper floors. Read more

Description: Camenzind Evolution had a di๏ฟฝicult task for this building: an intensive market
research on potential customers. Their lifestyle, income class and needs is what shaped both form
and function of this residential block. Three specific target groups were identified and a bold design
(with very striking interiors too) was applied in each case, going beyond the functional aspect of
the structure. The maisonette names were: Classic, Industrial and Funky. Read more here.
9. Extension of the Swiss National Museum
Architect: Christ & Gantenbein Architects
Location: Museumstrasse 2, 8001 Zรผrich
Year: 2016
Description: The Swiss National Museum, a late 19th century beauty by Gustav Gull, was in need of
additional space. A new wing adjoining the Platzspitz Park was added in 2016 to solve this problem.
The new structure, a vast concrete monolith, will appeal to all Brutalist lovers. An e๏ฟฝective
intervention with its own modern character in my opinion. Christ & Gantenbein Architects, best
known for their Kunstmuseum in Basel, have also a less known but equally superb structure in

Description: Zรผrich's District 5, a traditionally monofunctional industrial zone, is rapidly changing
into a more mixed and culturally exciting area. The former Toni milk processing building has been
converted into a heaven of culture (Museum fรผr Gestaltung Zรผrich), education (University of Arts)
and housing. In addition, the architects have recently completed Lucerne School of Art and Design.

11. Stadelhofen Railway Station

Location: Stadelhoferstrasse 8, 8001 Zรผrich
Year: 1990
Description: Stadelhofen Railway Station was the first rapid-transit system to be built in
Switzerland. The Swiss Federal Railways commissioned the expansion of the already existing
railway station on Stadelhofen Square. A then young Calatrava integrated a third track, a
commercial arcade and, perhaps the best, a canopied promenade, which is a beautiful continuous

12. Peterhof Building

Description: This unassuming Credit Suisse building on Bahnhofstrasse hides one of Zรผrich's most
special courtyards. It was designed in 1930 by the Pfister brothers in conjunction with Otto Mรผnch,
who was responsible for the ornate faรงade. Other nostalgic and wonderful buildings by Werner and
Otto Pfister are the Schweizerische Nationalbank and the Kantonale Verwaltung Walche. Read

Description: When Zรผrich Hauptbahnhof opened in 1871, it was the largest railway station in
Switzerland. The magnificent sandstone neo-Renaissance building awed its citizens and was a
symbol of power and progress. Since then, the station has seen people coming and going. In 1990 it
was restored to its full splendor. Don't miss the temporary art installations in the richly decorated

14. Museum Haus Konstruktiv

Location: Selnaustrasse 25, 8001 Zรผrich
Year: 1932
Description: The historically impressive ewz-Unterwerk Selnau building, which provided the city
with electricity until 1998, was transformed in 2001 into a vibrant museum. Five floors of exhibition
space o๏ฟฝer spectacular art. However, the cherry of the cake is the museum's top floor where the
unique exposed metal structure from the 1940s can be spotted and the equally impressive library.

16. MFO Park

Year: 2002
Description: Several awards now crown MFO Park, and experimental and always growing project to
the north of Oerlikon railway station. Located on the former site of a locomotive factory named
Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon (MFO), the structure of the park reframes the original building footprint.
The spacious metal hall is enveloped by sumptuously sprawling plants and open on three sides.

17. FocusTerra Research and Information Centre

Description: The historical Department of Earth Sciences at ETH Zรผrich has remodeled its
courtyard to exhibit an interactive mineralogical and geological collection. The brightly lit
courtyard came to life in 2009 when a three-story tower was added to the space thus opening up a

18. Freitag Flagship Store

Year: 2006
Description: In 1993, Freitag started to make tarp-bags. An innovative recycling idea. In 2006 they
decided to have their flagship store built from 17 rusty, recycled freight-containers, selected in
person in Hamburg and brought to Zurich by rail. Stacked low enough not to violate the cityโs
restriction on high-rise, high enough to send shivers down anyoneโs spine. The way the elements
are stacked is authentic, and only connecting elements from the shipping industry are used. This
also means that dismantling the tower and leaving the site in its original state will be a

19. The Dolder Grand Hotel Renovation
Architect: Foster + Partners
Location: Kurhausstrasse 65, 8032 Zรผrich
Year: 2008
Description: Zรผrich's grandiose hotel gem, The Dolder Grand, was designed in 1899 by Jacques
Gros. More than a hundred years serving its customers it got a faceli๏ฟฝ. Whilst the external fabric was
respectfully restored, the interiors have been lavishly enhanced. The most significant move was the
rearranging of the entrance to the south, which now welcomes guests with breathtaking views
across Zurich and the Alps. The new building consumes half the energy of the old (75% less energy

20. Pavilion Le Corbusier

Description: Le Corbusier's last building, Heidi Weber Museum, was built in 1967. The Swiss born
architect was obsessed with systems and modules and this last structure was based on cubic units
of 2.26 meters on each side, created according to the Modulor measures. It celebrates the use of
steel, with which he explored prefabrication and assembly, and a freedom through modularity, in
which the plan is completely open but infinitely adaptable. Read more here.
21. Schulhaus Leutschenbach

Year: 2009
Description: When Christian Kerez finished this primary school in Leutschenbach, he was making
history. The learning facility o๏ฟฝers a completely new dimension for learning. From the gym located
on the top floor (instead of submerged under the earth) to the lack of hallways (all the classrooms
open on to large recreational areas that can also be used for teaching activities), Kerez has

22. ETH HIT e-science Lab

Description: Named a๏ฟฝer ETH Zรผrich alumnus Branco Weiss, who supported the building
financially, this laboratory with a Miesian faรงade is at the top of green structures. The faรงade is a
contributor to the building's climatic properties; sensors respond to the weather and the height of
the sun. The depths of the balconies di๏ฟฝer depending on their compass direction, so they also act

Description: Not only were the site constraints unique (the residential and commercial needs were
to be located above a tram depot), but the housing program included di๏ฟฝerent forms of living with
high ecological and social standards. The polygonal shape of the building was created around a
main public square which is also connected to a continuous and open roof space accessible to its
residents. The flats are minimal thanks to a thoughtful process that removes the areas of a house
that can be shared and puts them in the common rooms (laundry, gyms and even guest rooms).
