Scene, decors, mecanic The stage with its giant turbine meets the usual high level standards and requirements for a Cirque du Soleil production as it was designed and constructed with our patented OST system. The “Russian Cradle Duo” acrobatic apparatus requires that a catcher strap himself on a ladder in a way that he can still bend forward. The strongman can then catch or fling his partner in the air where she performs more and more intricate somersaults. The requirements for this apparatus were that it had to be able to sustain up to 3.5 G in acceleration, be able to deploy in 15 seconds and close itself for transportation. Challenge accepted… and met! Our designers were able to create an apparatus that was both spectacular and extrememly safe for the catcher and his partner. The “Acro Net” number is also spectacular, on a large net that covers the entire stage, acrobats execute classic trampoline figures. SE designed a complete mechanism comprised of four masts that hold the net in a constant tension so the acrobats may perform in a completely safe manner. Each mast is equipped with a motor and a tension of 12,000 pounds is generated on each of the four corners of the net. The tension must constantly and instantly be rebalanced between the four motors with the performers jumping up and down. Finally, the “Contortion” act apparatus, a giant mechanical hand, represented the first time that Scène Éthique designers were called upon to design and fabricate a part of the human body. The mechanical hand had to be a representation of a left hand, palm down, and be large enough to be used as a platform for four contortionists to perform their number. The hand is 14 feet long with the fingers and 8 feet wide. It can move on the stage with a very simple mechanism inside and requires only one technician to operate it. Cirque du Soleil describes Kurios – Cabinet of Curiosities as « a show that immerses you in a mysterious and fascinating realm that disorients your senses and challenges your perceptions. Kurios is an ingenious blend of unusual curiosity acts and stunning acrobatic prowess ». Stéphane Roy’s set design makes you step into the curio cabinet of an ambitious inventor who defies the laws of time, space and dimension in order to reinvent everything around him.
