CIRCUS
It all started with the research into Theme Parks, which then develop into the main topic ‘Circus’. Bristol is well know for it’s circus culture and hardly any of us know that, unless you are already involved. The subject is so broad that it gave me many possibilities for outcomes. This is why I decided to divide it into five sub-topics: aerial, clowns, animals, park drawings and a sculpture exploring balance. These have developed into a project that explores a variety of methods such as: screen-printing, embossing and laser cutting.
For this project I intended to push boundaries by combining performance and creative design. Bringing my audience a breath of fresh air by exploring (title question). This will be achieved through further development and research of the topic and the use of methods such as: screen printing, paper installation/cut-out, laser cutting and also incorporate the use of my rubber letter stamp.
This term I want to get the most from the facilities at university and create outcome from methods I haven’t tried before. I still want to incorporate and keep experimenting with screen-printing and laser cutting. As of yet I can’t say what my final outcome(s) are going to be but I would like to work on a large (paper/ light) ‘Installation’. Through my work I want to learn more about typography and print design. After Graduation I would like to work for a Branding or Advertising Agency for a couple of years but I’m open to see where the self-directed project takes me.
Aiming to gain a new skill at the Circus School in St. Pauls, Bristol.
This new experience will give me an inside to some of the creative and technical skills needed to be part of the ‘Big Top’. On the other hand explore the relationship between Circus Design and the public.

About Play
This project developed as a subtopic of Circus; this outcome focuses on the relationship between balance and play. We can relate to Circus in many ways; memories from our childhood, the colourful sometimes-scary clowns, the smell of candy floss, the brilliant performances, etc. Designed for play is a series of playground drawings from around Bristol, including: Castle Park, St Andrews, St Pauls, and Cotham Park. There are over 150 parks and green spaces in Bristol with play facilities. These playgrounds provide the audience with physical exercise, entertainment and the change to make friends and memories. I wanted to investigate how easy it is to make children play through an environment.
Play has been describe as ‘a subset of life... an arrangement in which one can practice behavior without dreading its consequences’ by Csikszentmihalyi in 1981. It is important to give young children the time, space and resources to play in their own way, without the influence of adults structuring their time and activities. Children are growing too quickly; we need more playgrounds and support for the future of childhood.
According to Fromberg and Gullo (1992), play enhances language development, social competence, creativity, imagination, and problem solving skills. Play also offers an ideal opportunity for parents to engage fully with their children. During our childhood we play, discover and learn, potentially developing an interest for future hobbies. This research started from the curiosity to demonstrate the association between kids climbing and swinging at the park and aerialists’ skills. We can all relate to the topic through memories of our childhood and play.
To demonstrate the sense of being able to touch everything at playgrounds I decided to emboss the vector creating interesting tactile pieces. This wasn’t enough though; that’s why I decided to screen-print them first to bring them to life. The final outcome is an A1 piece, accompanied by 10 smaller drawings (height 112mm x width 210mm) framed and a booklet for the public to enjoy.

ANIMAL RIGHTS

Outcomes:
These posters are the result of the development work towards engaging the audience and making them aware of the matter. Animal Rights are a series of posters promoting the ban on Wild Animals being used in Circuses. These posters aim to encourage people to judge the issue and take action so the Prime Mister will bring the ban by 2015.

ANIMALS
HAVE
RIGHTS
Animals aren’t actors
Thousands of these animals are forced to perform silly, confusing tricks under the threat of physical punishment; are carted across the country in cramped and stuffy boxcars or semi-truck trailers; are kept chained or caged in barren, boring, and filthy enclosures; and are separated from their families and friends—all for the sake of human “entertainment.” Many of these animals even pay with their lives.

Outcomes:
Mask of Leadership is the title for my final newsprint outcome for the sub-topic CLOWNS. It all started from the research into clown types and their expressions. At first I decided to experiment with screen-printing and embossing to find a direction for this outcome. Then I moved onto screen-printing different clown features on people’s faces, which lead me to research more in detail the difference between clown make-ups and their characteristics.
After asking the audience for their opinion on the sub-topic, it became obvious I needed to use well know people to target a wider audience. It wasn’t until my friend mentioned this quote that I decided to start researching famous politicians that would have a good clown face. After choosing a selection of photographs I decided to give each politician a clown type and 2 descriptive words that reflected their personality or actions.

‘The smashing success of these animal-free circuses proves that circuses don’t need to use animals to wow crowds or make money. When you buy a ticket to one of these modern, humans-only productions, you’re sending the message that cruel, outdated animal acts don’t sell.’
Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.’
