CINEAST FESTIVAL REVIEW OF 2014 AND HIGHLIGHTS OF 2015 EDITION

1

The “CinEast” festival started in 2008 and aims to present to the Luxembourg public the best cinematographic produc-tions from Central and Eastern Europe. While focusing mainly on new films, the festival also presents some of the most re-markable works from the past.

Since its creation, the festival has been constantly growing and diversifying – it currently covers productions from 18

ex-communist countries. The substantial increase in the num-ber of visitors proves that there is a real need and interest for this type of event in Luxembourg.

Each year the public is becoming ever more diverse, and the festival contributes to the better integration of the different communities living in Luxembourg and the Greater Region.

Attendance details

According to the official figures of our partners, more than 7,200 spectators attended the more than 100 screenings of the festival in 2014 (10% more than in 2013). In addition, rou-ghly 1,000 students were present at the school projections and around 1,500 people participated in special events, i.e. a total of over 9,800 participants. Our website (www.cineast.lu) received more than 25,000 vi-sits in 2014 (15% more than last year).

Special events The special events also attracted considerable crowds in 2014: We had the great honour to welcome the Dutch artist Ulay as part of our first collaboration with Mudam, as well as Sergei Loznitsa (who presided over the jury). Discussions were held with many renowned directors, producers and actors, such as Igor Cobileanski, Helena Sujecka, Vilnis Kalnaellis and Gil Darnell which attracted considerable crowds.

The photography exhibition “So Far, So Close” at the Neimën-ster, featuring the work of 12 artists from Eastern European countries as well as Luxembourg was viewed by several thou-sand visitors.

The Melusina club was the venue of the Fanfara Transilvania / Balkan Night, which was sold-out and attended by more than 500 spectators. Two special events held at Exit 07 (rock ciné-concert by Kristen and (M)eat the Balkans) and the clos-ing event also attracted large crowds (more than 600 in total).

Screenings for young people organised in cooperation with several partners also generated considerable interest among young spectators (over 1,000 in total) and the gastronomic evening was fully booked as well.
