American Money & Coins

Analyze the learner
• 2nd grade (7-8 years)• 8 boys & 14 girls• 60% Caucasian, 25%
African American, 15% Latino
• All have experience in simple math concepts such as adding and subtracting
Main Objective• The 2nd grade class will work on several
counting workbooks, create their own counting wallets and piggy banks, listen/discuss money and currency during lecture, and play related money games on the iPads. At the end of the week the students will be able to match the American currency pictures with their names; add, subtract, and count money; and write money amounts in number/decimal form. They will show they can do these by receiving at least 85% on the cumulative quiz at the end of the week.

Do “Counting Coins” printable book activity as a class. (Kinesthetic
learning - use plastic coins)
Go over each coin and currency’s word
names, number/decimal
representation, and matching with each
picture
Work through piggy bank coins book.

Practice and review as a class. Children will be called to the
board to answer questions about
coins and currency
Using the coins students bring in
(have extra for those who didn’t), have
students count coins, group coins, and use
coins to make specified amounts

Make piggy banks using mason jars, precut lids, and paint/craft items
