The WORSHIP PLANNING COM-MITTEE is chaired by Brenda Kel-ley and Sharon Thomson. Our Worship committee is responsible for working with the pastor to de-velop her themes — like our “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” series and church-wide picnic. This com-mittee is also instrumental in the launching of our new contempo-rary service — The Spring. Annu-ally, the worship committee plans our Easter, Christmas and other special holiday services. The worship planning committee focuses on short- and long-range planning of worship and on devel-oping the congregation as an ac-tive, vital worshiping community. Planning for vital worship on a sus-tained basis is a team sport! This
team meets at least once a month to generate the vision and themes for worship far enough in advance that sermons can be developed and appropriate music, art, drama or other material elements can be found or commissioned. The committee works in conjunc-tion with the pastor, the music director and the communications director to recruit and maintain our worship servant schedule and volunteer list for worship services. The worship planning team dis-covers all the gifts of all the people and invites them to use these gifts in worship through our various ser-vant opportunities. By giving themselves plenty of lead time and organizing themselves to be able to draw on the rich gifts of

In the next few newsletters, we will highlight our church com-mittees. We will list the duties, accomplishments and needs for each of these committees. Last month, we started with our Mis-sions Committee. This month, we feature three more.
It is our hope that you find a committee that interests you and that you will choose to become more active in some small way with that committee. To learn more or to ask questions, contact that committee’s chairperson or the church office.
The HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE is led by Chairperson Connie Couts.Do you enjoy getting together with friends and family after wor-ship services and after events? These activities are coordinated by our Hospitality Committee. The people on this team are the ambassadors of all things food and fellowship. The Hospitality Committee helps serve refreshments after Sunday service to provide a time for peo-ple to relax and enjoy fellowship with others. The committee also helps in the planning and organizing of spe-
cial events such as recognition receptions for veterans and grad-uates, church luncheons and pic-nics and any event that requires the use of our church kitchen. Our kitchen must meet the re-quirements of the Clay County Health Department and the Hos-pitality team is responsible for providing that clean and safe en-vironment. Our church is blessed to have such a nice kitchen facil-ity with all its accessories. If you enjoy working around food and a kitchen environment for the ben-efit of church functions, the Hos-pitality Committee is for you.More volunteers are needed on this committee, especially those

Emily Rice, daughter of Brian and Christi Rice and granddaughter of Steve and Caro-lyn Rice, was confirmed on July 15 during the 10 a.m. worship service. She recently completed her 4-week course with Pastor Laura Blevins to confirm her faith and Methodist membership. She learned about the history of John Wesley, details of the Bible and Sacraments of the United Methodist Church, and member-ship vows. She is committed to the mem-bership expectations of attending worship every week possible, continuing to grow in her spiritual journey, finding a place to serve both inside and outside the walls of the

church, and giving in accordance to her income. She has already ex-pressed an interest in joining the Communications Committee. Emily, 12, is beginning 7th grade at Excelsior Springs Middle School this fall. She enjoys participating in community theatre, taking bal-
let, pointe, jazz and contemporary dance classes at Dance Theatre Workshop, and writing her own stories, and helping her parents in volunteer work around town. Please congratulate her when you see her next and pray for her con-tinued spiritual growth.
One of our local mission projects in September will benefit the health rooms in our local elementary schools. Young children sometimes have accidents at school that require a change of pants and under-clothes. We can help ensure limited embarrassment by supplying the 3 elementary school health rooms with a selection of underwear and sweatpants for easy changing. Look for the collection basket located outside the church office door and let’s fill it with un-derpants and sweatpants for boys and girls, sizes 5T-youth L. We will be challenging the Richmond UMC to see who can collect the most items by Sept. 23. Loser gets doused with a very large bucket of ice water after church on September 30!
Pastor Laura invites everyone to bring your backpacks with them to church August 12 for a special dedication during worship. Prayers and blessings will be lifted to God for our students, teachers, school staff and administrators who will all be preparing for another school year.

Mighty Underpants Mission
Learn to be more welcoming to church visitorsPastor Laura encourages all congre-gation members to make a conscious effort to be welcoming and friendly to the guests of our church. As part of this encouragement, Lisa and Jeff Watkins are heading up a new ministry to take a “thank you bag” filled with goodies to first time visi-tors. If you have someone new sitting near you, or you notice them in the church please say hello! We want to develop a healthy practice of making our visitors feel at home
here in our church.
Forty percent of visitors make up their mind about a church before they even see the pastor, according to Barna Research. Within two minutes of the beginning of a service visitors have formed an opinion about whether the congregation is friendly.
Be intentional about saying hello and goodbye to guests. Escort newcomers to the nursery, bathrooms, coffee bar, etc. Don’t just point the way or give directions. Say, “I don’t think we’ve met before….” if you are not sure if
the person next to you is a member or a visitor. Make a special effort to re-member that visitor’s names and call them by name.
Don’t overlook visitors who come to the church for the first time for an event other than worship — like pre-school Sunday, Scout Sunday or other church holiday event.
Once someone has attended three times, they should be invited to join the church with a pastoral visit and/or an invitation to take part in an inquir-ers or new member class.
Starting this month, the Mighty Diapers mission will move from our church to the Good Samaritan Center. Mighty Diapers classes will run on the first Tuesday of the month (beginning Aug. 7) from 10 - 11 a.m. and on the third Tuesday of the month (starting Aug. 21) from 6 to 7 p.m. This is a change from the every Tuesday night schedule held here at the church. For more information about Mighty Diapers, contact Mighty Diapers Chair-person Samantha Kilgore at 816-536-9877.

Church picnic was an afternoon full of funOver 80 members of the congregation gathered Sunday, July 22 for a fun afternoon during our churchwide picnic celebration. With Barry McCrackin firing up the grill, hot dogs and hamburgers were served along with tables full of delicious side dishes brought in my church members and coordinated by the hospitality committee. Children enjoyed all types of games coordinated by Colleen Rhodus. The afternoon was the perfect wrap up to Pastor Laura’s “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” sermon series. Thank you to everyone who helped make this afternoon such a memorable experience.
