OUR VILLAGE CHURCH -‘THE WEEK THAT WAS…’

Baptism of

Jack Thomas McCollum

Today, we baptise Jack Thomas

McCollum, son for Gareth and

Paige McCollum and brother for

Sophie.

After a challenging first 6 months

of life, Jack has settled and come

into his own - a relaxed and

patient individual.

Gareth and Paige are thrilled to

be able to baptise Jack as they

did their little girl Sophie at The

Village Church. It was such a

special day spent with family,

giving thanks for the special

addition to their family. They

can’t wait to do it again with

Jack.

This week...with Cam

For those of us with children on holiday, this weather has come at the right

time! I’ve loved watching the family get outside, and my children, at least 2

of them, have had a surprising desire to do some gardening. The sunshine

has been a delight.

This weekend I will be interring ashes in our memorial garden, taking part in a

wedding, and we have a baptism on Sunday. As we rather crudely joke

about in ministry, hatch, match and dispatch! It rarely all happens across 3

days, but such is the rich life of a minister. This combined with my other

pastoral, administrative duties and preparing for Sunday.

It strikes me that on Sunday, we will gather around Water, Word, Bread and

Wine. Again, it’s rare to all happen on the one day, but a joy, nevertheless.

A baptism is always special, and the reading of focus from Luke sees the

disciples ask Jesus to ‘Increase our faith!’. We’ll consider what faith we are

baptising Jack into and maybe between now and then we can all do some

thinking about our own faith and whether we might ask Jesus the same thing!

A supporting Bible Study resource for you...

Please find below Sunday’s reading, a few thoughts and some questions for

reflection. You can use the studies every week, fortnightly or monthly.

A reminder that if you would like to join a Bible study group, please let Cam or

Shona know (their contact details are located at front of Church News).

This week’s Bible Study

Increase our faith

If in a group, welcome each other and share. Then discuss…

Question: How do you understand ‘faith’? Can you put some words

around it? Do you have enough? On a scale of 1 to 10?

Some thoughts…

Think about the stories you know across the gospels that include people be-

ing commended by Jesus for their faith. Think about how often and how lav-

ishly Jesus commends the faith of those who seek him out. "Your faith has

saved you," he tells the woman who anoints his feet, the Samaritan leper who

returns to thank him, the haemorrhaging woman who grasps his cloak. "Your

faith has made you well," he tells a blind beggar. "Such faith I have not seen

in all of Israel!" he says about a Roman centurion.

Question: What is it that Jesus commends in these people?

Reading Luke 17: 5-10

Some thoughts…

Debbie Thomas says: “Faith is simply recognizing our tiny place in relation to

God's enormous, creative love, and then filling that place with our whole

lives.”

Barbara Brown Taylor writes that we waste a great deal of time and energy

looking for the "key to the treasure box of more." All we lack, she argues, "is

the willingness to imagine that we already have everything we need. The

only thing missing is our consent to be where we are." In our consumeristic,

driven world, just ponder those thoughts.

Question:

➢ What do you think of these quotes?

➢ What is the treasure box of more?

Prayer Spend time in prayer, holding your thoughts, and if in a group, your

conversation and time together, before God.

The Village Church Camp 2019

Register your interest today!

It is again time to start thinking about our annual Church Camp to be held

on the weekend of 15 - 17 November. This year we are heading “overseas”

to a new location for our camp…yes, it’s across the bridge to the beautiful

Phillip Island Caravan Park www.phillipislandcpk.com.au. This facility will offer

an even greater selection of cabins, walks and fun than ever before!

Located on the beachfront, the caravan park offers easy access to the

beautiful Phillip Island beach and is only 500m from shopping and cafes.

There is lots to keep both adults and kids entertained.

As is our tradition the Saturday evening meal will be catered for and will

comprise a spit roast and desserts (BYO cutlery etc). Other meals are

self-catering. In addition to making the most of the new venue, activities you can expect on our camp weekend include: Walking (towards

Cape Woolamai), beach fun and games, swimming and relaxing.

You have the choice of a wide range of cabins, spots for your van or

camping sites. Please check out the website for your preference. Costs will

vary from about $110 for a family of 2 plus 2 children camping to about $ 300

for a family cabin.

Please place your name on the sign up sheet to indicate your interest in

coming along. For any questions, please speak and/ or email John de Wijn

([email protected]).

We look forward to a fun and relaxing weekend.
