HOPE AND FORGIVENESS There were some interesting conceptions of sin prevalent in the time of the Hebrew scriptures. There was the belief that God punished sin immediately. Those who suffered disease or misfortune were, therefore, sinners getting their due from the Almighty. Today’s first reading hints at another kind of God. When David admits his sin, Nathan declares, “The L on his part has forgiven your sin” (2 Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What good news that must have been to David and those who, like him, could be honest enough to admit their sinfulness! Jesus is the good news of God’s mercy and forgiveness incarnate. Without Jesus, perhaps the good news would have been too good to believe, too difficult to imagine. But there he is in today’s Gospel, the God-man, forgiving a sinner and declaring that she is forgiven because of her great love. There is hope, then, for the rest of us sinners, if only we love enough! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Dress-a-Girl Ministry We have sent over 100 dresses of the dresses made by our group this year to the Tri-Valley Dress-a-Girl Project to ship with their dresses to Haiti, Uganda, Kenya and South Africa. Thanks to all who have contributed with time, talent and materials to this project for girls around the world. If anyone has any fabric for little girl dresses, we would appreciate any contributions. For the first time since we started this ministry 4 years ago we have no fabric to cut the dress-es. If you have any donations of fabric, please contact Dorothy Giammona, (510) 881-5326.

Thank You From St. Vincent de Paul

Thank you for your generous donation to the St. Vincent de Paul collection the weekend of May 28th & 29th. We collected $6,064. These funds will continue to enable us to serve the needy in our parish. As an example, we were able to help a family of 6 who were living in an apartment with virtually no furniture. We assisted them with the purchase of furniture from the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. They can now all sit at a table and have dinner together as a family.

Thanks again for your support!

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#137

The Liturgical Context

It is worthy remembering that “the liturgical proclamation of the word of God, especially in the eucharistic assem-bly, is not so much a time for meditation and catechesis as a dialogue between God and his people, a dialogue in which the great deeds of salvation are proclaimed and the demands of the covenant are continually restated”. The homily has special importance due to its eucharistic con-text: it surpasses all forms of catechesis as the supreme moment in the dialogue between God and his people which lead up to sacramental communion. The homily takes up once more the dialogue which the Lord has al-ready established with his people. The preacher must know the heart of his community, in order to realize where its desire for God is alive and ardent, as well as where that dialogue, once loving, has been thwarted and is now barren.

Fr. Terry’s Remarks— Pope Francis makes a very helpful distinction today when he asks us to see our homi-lies essentially as dialogues, and dialogues in the midst of the Eucharist. The Homily is not just meditation or a teaching time although it does have these elements. It is above all a moment of interaction, a time of dialogue be-tween God and his beloved people. We are not passive listeners or bored hearers but there is an active question-ing and answering, holy insights and genuine responses going on between God and us in out hearts, in our minds, in our emotions and with those around us. This is why the preacher should know the hearts of his people so that he can be an effective conduit in promoting a graceful dia-logue in the hearts of his hearers. We often think that dia-logue is just about words, but the most powerful can be in a silent look or minute gesture, an impulse of love or grace. From now on we must not put all the blame on lo-quacious preachers. When we sit down for the homily remember God is speaking to us in the words and manner of the preacher and your response is full of grace and healing. Dear Lord, help us all.
