Reflections ~ Reflexiones GGoossppeell:: MMaatttthheeww 11::1188--2244

Although Saint Joseph usually remains in the shadows of the Gospels, in today's reading he emerges into the sunlight. We can see him clearly as a man who loves Mary. When an angel assures him in a dream that Mary's child was conceived through the Holy Spirit, Joseph dares to believe. Joseph's faith is richly rewarded. He becomes the foster father of Mary's child. And he receives the honor of naming the child Jesus, a name that means "God saves." 1.) What makes for rough times in a relationship between parents and children, husband and wife, friend and friend? What can smooth things out? 2.) Look to Joseph for an example: what did he have to do before he could move forward in a confusing situation?

Matthew's Gospel today tells us Joseph was betrothed to Mary. Unlike engagement, betrothal was a binding contract. The couple might wait for a year before beginning married life. Sexual activity during the betrothal was frowned upon. If the bride became pregnant by

another man, her groom could denounce her, and she would be stoned to death. The alternative was quiet divorce. This would have saved Joseph from humiliation, but would have done nothing to protect Mary. God spoke in Joseph's dream and told him to take Mary as his wife. God named her child Jesus--the one who saves. Joseph took a risk and said "Yes" to God, without regard for the outcome. Not all women have a "just man" like Joseph to stand by them during pregnancy and birth, or the resources to cope with single motherhood or a child with disabilities. Take a risk like Joseph and commit to offering help. Copyright (c) 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Copyright (c) 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

PPAARRIISSHH BBUULLLLEETTIINN Please be advised that because of the Christmas and New Years Holidays, the bulletin was submitted for publishing earlier than usual. This means Mass intentions, bulletin announcements, meetings, prayers for the sick and deceased WILL NOT be updated until the next bulletin issue. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

RREETTIIRREEMMEENNTT FFOORR RREELLIIGGIIOOUUSS Today the annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious is being taken. The women and men Religious of the Archdiocese are appreciative of any help you can give and count on your assistance as they face retirement with limited resources. More importantly, though, please remember in your prayers the more than 500 women and men religious living and serving in the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

MMAARRYY AANNDD JJOOSSEEPPHH Mary and Joseph play a key role in our Catholic devotional and spiritual life. No doubt, much of our devotion to Jesus’ mother, Mary, and his foster father, Joseph, is rooted in our appreciation of their willingness to put themselves at the disposal of the will of God, to seek what God most desired of them and to carry it out. We find their example inspiring, and their proximity to the Lord consoling and encouraging. Knowing that they said yes to God in such dramatic and pivotal ways, even when there was so much at stake and there were so many obstacles to take into account, gives us much to ponder. Yet there is something else we must not forget: while God could have come to be with us as a child in any manner at all, God chose to be with us through the active and humble cooperation of a woman and a man, Mary and Joseph.

PPOOIINNSSEETTTTIIAASS We are asking for poinsettias to be used to decorate the church altar for Christmas. If you can help, please bring red poinsettia plants or a $10 cash donation for a plant to the Parish Office by Monday, December 23rd. Please label it for Spiritual Life. Thank you for your generosity!

TTRRUUSSTT IINN GGOODD On this final Sunday of Advent our scriptures focus on the historical birth of Jesus, who is son of David and Son of God, child and king, Jesus and Emmanuel. Isaiah the prophet begs Ahaz to ask for a sign, to allow God to offer him reassurance of the survival of the Davidic dynasty. The king hypocritically refuses to “tempt the LORD” in that way (Isaiah 7:12), but the prophet foretells the birth of a son, an heir to the throne, who will prove the Lord’s enduring protection of God’s chosen lineage on the throne of David. The child will be called Emmanuel. Matthew’s reference to this history in his description of the birth of Jesus highlights the contrast between the faithless refusal of trust shown by Ahaz, and the complete trust in God shown by Mary and Joseph in bringing about the birth of Jesus Christ. SSTT.. VVIINNCCEENNTT DDEE PPAAUULL Do you know someone in the parish in need? You can have them call the parish office and ask for a visit from St. Vincent de Paul members. We can deliver groceries, help pay some urgent utility bills, or just visit a while! A person does not have to be Catholic. Please let the office know if a Spanish speaking person is required.

EEMMMMAANNUUEELL Of all of the names connected to our Lord, two stand out in the ways that they describe the identity and mission of the Lord: “Emmanuel: God is with us” and “Jesus: God saves.” The most stunning thing about our Christian faith is that God is not distant, abstract, demanding, a god of wrath and military might. Rather, God desires to be near to us, in relationship, one with us in our challenges and in our joys. God is with us even when remaining with us will lead to betrayal, persecution, and violent death. God who is beyond all of this struggle remains with us so that we might transcend the limitations of our human nature in order to become more like God, to embrace the divine light that resides within each of us. As we approach the celebration of Christmas, consider this: what does it mean to you that God is with us, now and always? What does this call you to be and to do as a Christian, as a follower of God’s Son, Jesus, who is with us and who saves us?

O COME LET USADOREHIM

OUR SUNDAY VISITOR, INC. 909

Dear Parishioners,

Are you ready for Christmas? It’s a question we often asked. But I ask: how can we as Catholic really

be ready for Christmas? How can we keep the season of holiness in our hearts as we “wait in joyful

hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ”?

First. I invite you to take some extra time in prayer. Even if it is just a few extra minutes a day, take

time to reflect on the Nativity of our Lord, God’s gift to us as a promise of salvation. I encourage you

also to celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation, which brings with it grace and peace. And Finally, I

urge us all to share our hope with friends and family, inviting them to celebrate Mass with us. In this

way, we can truly be ready for Christmas.

May the Peace of Christ be with you this Christmas, and throughout the year.
