FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

THE BAPTISMAL PLUNGE… A couple of years ago, a priest friend of mine told me that he participated in what has be-come known as the “Polar Plunge.” If you haven’t heard of it, “the Polar Plunge” usually occurs every New Years Day at Coney Island. The participants take a nice, invigorating dip in the Atlan-tic Ocean on January 1st. No wonder at my friend’s response on coming out of the water-”It was really cold!” The temperature was about forty two degrees which definitely is chilly-but he sur-vived! I was thinking about the plunge this weekend because this Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Jesus. The Baptism of Our Lord did not occur in a Church but rather in the Jor-dan river. I am not sure of the temperature of the Jordan River, but it probably was a whole lot warmer than the Atlantic in January-so Jesus did not need a wet suit, a neoprene hood, and boots! In any event, Jesus was baptized, which might strike us as a little bit strange since he did not have any sin at all. As we know from the gospel, the Lord was plunged into the river by John the Baptist. Even John thought this was a little bit strange for he said to the Lord, “I ought to be baptized by you and yet you come to me?” According to one saint, Jesus was baptized for two reasons: to sanctify the water for all of us sinners and also to set a proper example for all of us to follow. Certainly we did follow Jesus’ example and we were baptized-that’s why we are here in the Church this weekend. When our Lord received baptism, the heavens were opened, the Spirit appeared and a voice proclaimed from the heavens: “This is my beloved Son.” Now, none of these things happened the day the sacramental waters were poured over our head. Nevertheless, some important things oc-curred the day we were christened. What happened? Well, original sin, the sin of our first parents, was cleansed from our soul. Secondly, we received God’s grace for the very first time in baptism-God’s divine life in the form of the three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit came to dwell in us. The third effect of baptism is a little harder to understand. The Church tells us that on that day we received in our souls a spiritual seal known as a “Character.” What that means is that through the sacrament of baptism we became something-Catholic Christians marked by the seal of Christ that can never be erased or taken away. That is why baptism is conferred only once. Final-ly, in baptism we began our journey in the Catholic faith; it was our initiation-our joining the team that is known as the Catholic Church. So baptism was an important step for us even though we were not aware of it at the time. In that regard, I heard a story about a little girl, maybe about four years old. She was attending her first baptism and was watching the priest very closely. As Father started to pour the water over the child’s head, the girl yelled out: “Hey! How come he’s brainwashing the baby?” Well, hopefully we all have a better understanding of baptism than that! Baptism is not brainwashing! Yet on that special day we too “took the plunge” not into the ocean but into the saving waters of God’s grace at the font and became his beloved sons and daugh-ters. May we always live by the spirit of faith which we received at our baptism. Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
