PARISH NEWS

ASH WEDNESDAY Wednesday, February 26th is Ash Wednesday. Ashes will be distributed at the 8:30 and 12 Noon Masses and at 3:00 PM service and 7:30 PM Mass.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Every Friday during Lent, Stations of the Cross will be conducted after the 12 Noon Mass fol-lowed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel. The Teen Club will conduct the Liv-ing Stations of the Cross on Friday, April 3rd Friday, April 10th at 8:00 PM in the Church.

ABSTINENCE Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years and older.

FASTING Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. those bound by this rule may take only one full meal; two smaller meals are per-mitted as necessary to maintain strength accord-ing to one’s needs, but eating solid food be-tween meals is not permitted. There is a serious obligation to observe these penitential practices in a substantial way. Those whose work or health would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence. Individual conscience should decide proper cause of excuse. A more serious excuse is required to excuse oneself from Ash Wednesday and good Friday fast and absti-nence. During Lent, the Church encourages at-tendance at daily mass, self-imposed time of fasting and generosity to local, national and worldwide programs of sharing.

10 Innovative Things to Consider Giving Up For Lent

1. Vending machines of any kind: snacks, soda

or even lottery tickets 2. Using the word “I”: would certainly force

you to say and think about things from a dif-ferent perspective

3. Plastic bags: Take your own re-usable bags to the store with you

4. Offering constructive criticism: Only offer complements

5. Throwing away plastic baggies: find at least one or two other uses after the initial use to make the product last longer.

6. Pie: Don’t give up all sweets and set yourself up for failure; just pick one and stay true to your commitment.

7. Name calling: Stop being judgmental by call-ing others “lazy”, “evil”, “scary” or “weird”.

8. Excess shopping: During Lent only buy items that are essentials to you and your household. Buy for “need”, not “want”.

9. Blame: During Lent you will not blame any-thing on anyone- take responsibility where needed and let the rest go.

10. Internet: Outside of work requirements and paying bills, unplug yourself from the infor-mation superhighway. Your emails, jokes, recipes and games will still be there in forty days. Replace that time with prayer, maybe say the rosary.

So what will you give up for Lent? Will you pick something easy like not walking and chew-ing gum at the same time or something a bit deeper such as refraining from using profanity words? Whatever you choose, remember that Christ made the ultimate sacrifice for you; therefore make your sacrifice a noble one for Him.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

LENT...NO MORE “FLUFFER NUTTERS”… One sandwich that I occasionally enjoy is called a “Fluffernutter.” Maybe some of the younger chil-dren have never heard of it! But when I was growing up, it was kind of a popular thing. Take a slice of bread, spread it with peanut butter and then on the other slice liberally coat with that marshmallow concoc-tion known as “Fluff.” Put it together and voila-a “Fluffernutter!” Of course I know that this type of a sandwich is really not the healthiest option for lunch or snack time but it’s delicious. When I was a curate at Saint Patrick’s Church in Yorktown, the old Irish cook would see me eating one of those sandwiches and she would say, “Father, are you going to have real food or eat that kid stuff?” All in a sweet Irish Brogue! In any event, this article is not about Fluffernutter sandwiches, but it’s about coming to a more grown up appreciation of our faith in general. This Wednesday, we celebrate Ash Wednesday-it’s the start of Lent, that forty day period of preparation for Easter. On Ash Wednesday, we receive ashes on our forehead. The ashes are a sign of our mortality-we came from dust and to dust we shall return. They also are a sign of our repentance in so much as we should turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. Unfortunately, not a few Catholics have kind of a childish notion of what the ashes mean and what Lent is all about in general. For some, the ashes (which are from burnt palms) possess a magical symbolism. For others, they are a Catholic “badge of honor.” One priest I knew, now deceased, told me that out of all the days in the year, he hated Ash Wednesday the most! He called it “Catholic voodoo day.” This priest would usually arrange to be on a cruise at the start of Lent if you could imagine it. On a cruise on Ash Wednesday one year, when people discovered he was a priest, they demanded ashes. All that he gave them that day, however, were ashes from cigarette and cigar butts! I know that’s extreme but the priest did have a point. Some Catholics never grow up and learn more about their faith. The blessed ashes that we receive this week are sacramentals. Sacramentals are signs instituted by the Church to help us to receive the chief effects of the sacraments. Ashes are not as important say as the Holy Eucharist is. That should be clear but for some Catholics it is not. One Ash Wednesday at another parish distributing communion, a man shook his head at me and said, “I didn’t come here for that-give me the ashes!” Guess you can see why some priests get exasperated at times! In any event, Lent is a time for us to grow not only in our knowledge about God by reading and stud-ying, it is also a time to mature in our understanding of the Lord by our prayer and devotion-to truly come to “know Christ” as a friend. Traditionally, the Church recommends three things during Lent; they are pray-er, fasting, and almsgiving. Prayer can take many forms-the rosary, stations of the cross, meditation, a visit to the blessed sacra-ment, novenas, Prayer is essentially talking to God. This Lent, let’s carve a little more time out for com-munion with God. Then there’s fasting. It means going without the food and drinks that we often crave-goodbye “fluffernutters” for forty days! By going without the dessert, the candy, the cigarettes or the cock-tails we gain mastery over the things of the flesh. Finally, there’s almsgiving. This could be writing a check or donating money. However, it could be also giving of our precious time and energies to help others who might really need it. Whatever we do this Lenten Season, let it be for the right reason; to glorify God so that we can receive a great reward from our heavenly Father. Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
