  • A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR ……1. A Final Report on the 2016 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. As

of this date, we have $233,667 in pledges – Last year at this time our pledge total was $229,856.Thankstoallwhomade this possible and to those, while unable to contribute, prayed for the success of our campaign.

    2. Next weekend, we will welcome first year students atDenison to town and offer for them and our parish school students the following prayers. (remaining DU students arrive later and begin classes on September 1st.)

PRAYER OF BLESSINGS FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS

Eternal God, Your wisdom is beyond our understanding. Yet it is revealed to us in the life and love of Jesus, Your Son. Bless students and teachers as they begin anew. May they, like Jesus, grow in wisdom, age and grace. Enlighten them with your Word and fill them with your Spirit that they may follow the path that leads to Your wisdom. Bless teachers with compassion and patience, joy and peace, and bless, too, all who assist them. May students and teachers alike be charged with curiosity and courage to make this world a home where hope endures. Open their eyes that they may see Your presence each day, open their ears that they may hear Your voice in unexpected places, open their minds that they may understand the mystery of Your love, and open their hearts that they may grow in likeness to the mind and heart of Christ. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

I was listening to a Catholic radio show, and the topic was the relationship between Church art, architecture, and music. Could you say a few words about that? I will try to limit myself to a few words. As the setting for liturgy, the physical worship space is deeply connected with music. Ceiling height, congregational seating, the presence or absence of a choir loft and carpet…all of these affect the natural acoustic of the space and the location of the musicians. In turn, these factors influence amplificationmethods, which instruments are effective, and what music ismost prayerfully suited for a given space. There havebeen – and continue to be – a variety of architectural, artistic, andmusicalstylesreflectiveofthevariousculturesof the global Church. When designed well, architecture, art, and music work together harmoniously and beautifully to inspire us to prayer and a deeper encounter with God.

This is the tenth in the summer series of questions about liturgical music at St. Edward. To submit a question, contact Paul at the email address or phone number given above.

Monday, August 22 ~ Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time

Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Holy Gospel: Luke 1:26-38 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee

named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the

virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!" But she

was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And

the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will

conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be

called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His father David, and He

will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of His kingdom there will be no end." And Mary said to the

angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come

upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be

called holy, the Son of God. And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a

son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible."

And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the

    angel departed from her.

Meditation: How does Mary respond to God’s plan for her role in salvation history as delivered by the

angel Gabriel? Does she respond “Let me get back with you in a couple of weeks...I need to talk with my

attorney to discuss liability issues and to get a contract drawn up, I need to talk with my accountant about

any tax implications, I need to check out blogs to see what others might say about this situation, I need to

post this on my Facebook account and get feedback from others, I need to e-mail and text my friends to

see what they have to say...” No, Mary’s relationship with God is strong. She knows and understands that

she is hearing something well beyond human capability. It will surely take a miracle which surpasses all

that God has done previously. Her question, “how shall this be, since I have no husband” is not prompted

by doubt, fear or skepticism – but rather by wonderment! She is a true hearer and doer of the Word, and

she immediately responds with faith and trust. Mary's prompt response of "yes" to the divine message is a

model of faith for all believers. Mary believed God's promises even when they seemed impossible. She was

full of grace because she trusted that what God said was true and would be fulfilled. She was willing and

eager to do God's will, even if it seemed difficult or costly. God gives us grace and he expects us to

respond with the same willingness, obedience, and heart-felt trust as Mary did. When God commands He

also gives the grace, help, strength, and means for us to respond. We can either yield to his grace or

resist and go our own way. What is your response to God’s plan for you in life?

Prayer: O God, who made the Mother of your Son to be our Mother and our Queen, graciously grant that,

sustained by her intercession, we may attain in the heavenly Kingdom the glory promised to your children.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one

God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: God lavishes his grace upon all who believe in him. He shows his favor to the lowly, to

those who are humble and receptive to his word. We see the unfolding of God's plan of redemption in the

events leading up to the Incarnation, the birth of the Messiah. The new era of salvation begins with the

conception of Jesus in the womb of Mary. This child to be born is conceived by the gracious action of the

Holy Spirit upon Mary, who finds favor with God. As Eve was the mother of all humanity doomed to sin,

now Mary becomes the mother of the new Adam who will father a new humanity by his grace (Romans

5:12-21). This child to be conceived in her womb is the fulfillment of all God’s promises. He will be

  • “great” and “Son of the Most High” and “King” (Luke 1:32-33), and his name shall be called “Jesus”, which

means “the Lord saves”. “He will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). The promise of an

everlasting kingdom to the house of David (Isaiah 9:6-7) is fulfilled in the King to be born in Mary’s womb.

About the Queenship of Mary: Mary’s Queenship has roots in Scripture. At the Annunciation, Gabriel

announced that Mary’s Son would receive the throne of David and rule forever. At the Visitation, Elizabeth

calls Mary “mother of my Lord.” As in all the mysteries of Mary’s life, Mary is closely associated with

Jesus: Her Queenship is a share in Jesus’ kingship. We can also recall that in the Old Testament the

mother of the king has great influence in court. In the fourth century St. Ephrem called Mary “Lady” and

“Queen.” Later Church fathers and doctors continued to use the title. Hymns of the 11th to 13th centuries

address Mary as queen: “Hail, Holy Queen,” “Hail, Queen of Heaven,” “Queen of Heaven.” The Dominican

rosary and the Franciscan crown as well as numerous invocations in Mary’s litany celebrate her Queenship.

The feast is a logical follow-up to the Assumption and is now celebrated on the octave day of that feast. In

his encyclical To the Queen of Heaven, Pope Pius XII points out that Mary deserves the title because she is

Mother of God, and because of her preeminent perfection and because of her intercessory power.

Tuesday, August 23 ~ Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time

    Saint Rose of Lima, Virgin

Holy Gospel: Matthew 23:23-26 Jesus said: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You

pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier things of the law: judgment and

mercy and fidelity. But these you should have done, without neglecting the others. Blind guides, who

strain out the gnat and swallow the camel! Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You cleanse

the outside of cup and dish, but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, cleanse

first the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may be clean.”

Meditation: Jesus used the example of tithing to show how far they had missed the mark. God had

commanded a tithe of the first fruits of one's labor as an expression of thanksgiving and honor for his

providential care for his people (Deuteronomy 14:22; Leviticus 27:30). The scribes, however, went to

extreme lengths to tithe on insignificant things (such as tiny plants) with great mathematical accuracy.

They were very attentive to minute matters of little importance, but they neglected to care for the needy

and the weak. Jesus admonished them because their hearts were not right. They were filled with pride and

contempt for others. They put unnecessary burdens on others while neglecting to show charity, especially

to the weak and the poor. They meticulously went through the correct motions of conventional religion

    while forgetting the realities.

Prayer: O God, you set Saint Rose of Lima on fire with your love, so that, secluded from the world in the

austerity of a life of penance, she might give herself to you alone; grant, we pray, that through her

intercession, we may tread the paths of life on earth and drink at the stream of your delights in heaven.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one

God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: The essence of God's commandments is love – love of God and love of neighbor. God is

love and everything he does flows from his love for us. True love is unconditional, costly, and sacrificial –

it both embraces and lifts the burdens of others. Do you allow the love of God to truly transform your

whole life – including the way you think of others, speak of them, and treat them?

About Saint Rose of Lima: The first canonized saint of the Western Hemisphere, Rose of Lima (1586-

1617) might also be considered a type of the special vocation of contemplative-in-the-world. Inspired by

the example of St. Catharine of Siena, Rose of Lima became a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic.

Hers was a life heroic in virtue and penance. She expiated the evils perpetrated by the conquerors of the

land in their lust for gold. For many her life was a silent sermon of penance. Pope Clement X stated in the

bull of canonization: "Since the discovery of Peru no missionary has arisen who effected a similar popular

zeal for the practice of penance." In reward came heavenly joys, the comforting companionship of her

holy guardian angel and of the Blessed Virgin. August 24, 1617, proved to be the day “on which the

paradise of her heavenly Bridegroom unlocked itself to her.”

Wednesday, August 24 ~ Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time

    Feast of Saint Bartholomew, Apostle

Holy Gospel: John 1:45-51 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one about whom

Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.” But Nathanael said to

  • him, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael

coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true child of Israel. There is no duplicity in him.” Nathanael

said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, I saw you

under the fig tree.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”

Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You

will see greater things than this.” And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven

opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Meditation: When Philip (also called Batholomew) brought Nathaniel to Jesus, Jesus did something which

only God could do! He opened Nathaniel's heart and his innermost thoughts and desires to God's

revelation. Jesus called Nathaniel a true “Israelite in whom there is no guile.” Nathaniel was an earnest

seeker of God. He not only sought to grow in understanding of God's word, but he sought an intimate

personal relationship with God as well. That is why he was willing to meet Jesus, to see if perhaps this

miracle worker from Galilee might be the long-awaited Messiah and Savior.

Prayer: Strengthen in us, O Lord, the faith, by which the blessed Apostle Bartholomew clung

wholeheartedly to your Son, and grant that through the help of his prayers your Church may become for

all the nations the sacrament of salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns

with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: God places in every heart a desire and intimate yearning to personally know the One

who created us in love for love. Saint Augustine, who found God only after many years of wandering in

disbelief and spiritual darkness, exclaimed in his book Confessions: “You have made us for yourself, O

Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

Thursday, August 25 ~ Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time

Saint Louis, King; Saint Joseph Calasanz, Priest

Holy Gospel: Matthew 24:42-51 Jesus said to his disciples: “Stay awake! For you do not know on which

day your Lord will come. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the

thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you also

must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. “Who, then, is the faithful

and prudent servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household to distribute to them their food

at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on his arrival finds doing so. Amen, I say to

you, he will put him in charge of all his property. But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is

long delayed,’ and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with drunkards, the servant’s

master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign

him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.”

Meditation: Jesus ends his teaching on watchfulness and vigilance with another parable about a master

and his servants (Matthew 24:.45-49). The storyline is similar. There is an element of surprise – the

master suddenly returns home unexpectedly, probably from a long journey. He rewards the dutiful servant

for his faithfulness to his master. He has performed his service with diligence and has done all that the

master required of him. The master punishes the other servant who behaved wickedly. This servant was

not only irresponsible – he was frequently absent from work and spent his master's money by throwing

endless parties with his friends. The wicked servant also abused his fellow workers with physical force and

violence – probably to make them do the work he was supposed to do for his master. The master not only

throws him out of his house (he fires him from his job!). He also throws him into the worst possible place

    – a prison of no return where there is nothing but torment and misery. Should we be surprised to see the

master acting with such swift judgment? After all he is only giving back what they have given to him. The

master rewards the faithful servant with honor, promotion, and friendship, and he punishes the unfaithful

servant – who stole from his master and used his position to abuse others – by removing him from his

position of trust with the master and by throwing him into prison for robbing the master and mistreating

his fellow servants. The Lord has entrusted each of us with his gifts and grace – the grace to love God

with faithfulness, trust, and obedience – and the grace to love our neighbor as ourself. Now live it!

Prayer ~ Saint Louis: O God, who brought Saint Louis from the cares of earthly rule to the glory of a

heavenly realm, grant, we pray, through his intercession, that, by fulfilling our duties on earth, we may

seek out your eternal Kingdom. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in

the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

  • Prayer ~ Saint Joseph Calasanz: O God, who adorned the Priest Saint Joseph Calasanz with such

charity and patience that he labored tirelessly to educate children and endow them with every virtue,

grant, we pray, that we, who venerate him as a teacher of wisdom, may constantly imitate him, for he

was a co-worker of your truth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in

the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: What is the treasure which the Lord Jesus wants us to guard lest we lose it? It is the

treasure of his kingdom – a kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17).

We can lose heaven and friendship with God if we allow Satan – the deceiver and father of lies – to rob us

of our faith and trust in God! The Lord Jesus fortunately does not leave us on our own – he stands watch

with us to guide, direct, and keep us from harm's way. Jesus calls us to be vigilant in watching for his

return and to be ready to meet him when he calls us to himself. The Lord gives us his Holy Spirit so that

we may have the wisdom, help, and strength we need to turn away from sin to embrace God's way of

love, justice, and holiness. The Lord's warning of judgment causes dismay for those who are unprepared,

but it brings joyful hope to those who eagerly wait for his return in glory. God's judgment is good news

for those who are ready to meet him. Their reward is God himself, the source of all truth, beauty,

    goodness, love and everlasting life.

Friday, August 26 ~ Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time

Holy Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13 Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The Kingdom of heaven will be like

ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five

were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought

flasks of oil with their lamps. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell

asleep. At midnight, there was a cry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ Then all those

virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for

our lamps are going out.’ But the wise ones replied, ‘No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go

instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.’ While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom

came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked.

Afterwards the other virgins came and said, ‘Lord, Lord, open the door for us!’ But he said in reply,

‘Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the

    hour.”

Meditation: Jesus’ story of ten single ladies waiting for a wedding procession in the middle of the night

seem strange to us today. But Jesus' audience knew all too well how easily this could happen to them. To

show up for a wedding party without proper attire and travel arrangements is like trying to get into a

special event today that requires a prearranged permit or reservation. You just don’t get in without the

proper pass. Can you imagine the frustration travelers might experience when going abroad and finding

out that they can’t get into some country because they don’t have the right visa or a valid passport?

Prayer: O God, who cause the minds of the faithful to unite in a single purpose, grant your people to love

what you command and to desire what you promise, that, amid the uncertainties of this world, our hearts

may be fixed on that place where true gladness is found. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who

lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Jesus warns us that there are consequences for being unprepared. When the Lord Jesus

comes to lead you to his heavenly banquet will you be ready to hear his voice and follow? Our eternal

welfare depends on our hearing, and many have trained themselves to not hear. We will not be prepared

to meet the Lord, face to face, when he calls us on the day of judgment, unless we listen to him today.

The Lord invites us to feast at his heavenly banquet table. The question is, are you ready? If not, there

is no time like the present to get ready; that first step of readiness begins with the confessional!
