WOE IS ME Often we think about the troubles in our lives and cry out, “Woe is me!” Like Job we might look around in despair at the misery in the world. Like Job’s friends we might look backward for something or someone on which to blame our suffering. We may decide that God—or we ourselves—must be to blame. The Gospel today offers a different perspective from which to view earthly suffering. Jesus realized that there was nothing to be gained from looking around in despair or backward in blame. Instead, he looked forward in hope. He did not blame the sick and the possessed for their suffering, as many others did. And he did not give up hope, even though he knew he couldn’t cure all the sickness in the world. Jesus tried neither to eliminate human suffering nor to explain it. He simply did what good he could do in the time that he had.

WOE TO ME IF I DO NOT PREACH IT! Above all, Jesus kept preaching the good news of the reign of God, a spiritual reality that triumphs over every form of suffering. This was his purpose. When we believe in this good news we may not be healed of physical illness or understand the reason for human suffering, but we do receive something much more valuable. We are healed of the sickness of despair and freed from the demons of guilt and blame. The Spirit energizes us to do what good we can do in the time that we have. With Paul we will want everyone to know about the healing, liberating reign of God. We might even begin to say, “Woe to me if I do not preach” the gospel! Today’s Scriptures encourage us to look forward in hope, to do what we can, and to preach the good news of the reign of God. Today’s Readings: Job 7:1–4, 6–7; Psalm 147:1–6; 1 Corinthians 9:16–19, 22–23; Mark 1:29–39 Copyright © 2005, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

PASTORAL COUNSELING

New Apps Give Teens Easier Access to Behavioral Health Support A growing technology sector is creating coaching, counsel-ing and monitoring services for teens and young adults fighting eating disorders, depression, anxiety and other be-havioral health issues. These apps promise to open new avenues for those who want or need more mental health care -- because of high counseling costs, logistical hassles, struggles with stigma or other obstacles -- who would not otherwise get it. Many of these services focus on crisis intervention including DoSomething.org’s Crisis Text Line which provides teens free, round-the-clock access to trained counseling and refer-rals -- as well as Mood 24/7 which lets people send a daily text message about how they feel to a doctor, therapist or loved one. The CodeBlue app, scheduled to launch this spring, is de-signed to help teens alert members of a designated support network with a text message whenever they feel acutely depressed. Lantern, the subscription-based Web and Mobile service is set to release its eating disorder program in February for $33 to $75 a month. It has spent months testing on college campuses, where psychological problems have shot up some 28 percentage points between 2000-2010. Among high school and college students, psychopathology is now five times more prevalent than it was in 1938 and depression is the top cause of illness and disability for 10-to-19-year-old boys and girls (WHO). While tech-based interventions may not reverse the growing prevalence of mental issues that young people are dealing with, they have the potential to help build better programs that are more individualized and tailored. They may offer access to resources not otherwise available and may be comfortable for those for whom texting is a dominant form of communication. There are drawbacks, however, including concerns about security and privacy. There is also the danger that a smartphone or tablet could obscure something that a spe-cialist might spot only in person – a tone or gesture, for ex-ample, that could indicate a pending mtal health crisis. As well, when used alone, certain apps could be inadequate because the person also needs the in-person relationship provided by a therapist. These services are not intended to replace traditional therapy with tech -- but may augment the support given by a mental health provider.

Year of Consecrated Life

“In 2013 Pope Francis declared that a Year of Conse-crated Life be celebrated throughout the world. This Year of Consecrated Life began on the First Sunday of Advent, November 30, 2014. It will close on the Day of Consecrated Life, February 2, 2016. Given the busy Christmas Season, we have postposed our acknowledgement of this important remembrance.

Sr. Mary Dietz, SSND and Fr. Bill Headley, CSSp – serving in our parish as religious – will offer the pos-sibility of a joint presentation to different groups in the parish interested in learning more about religious life as lived today. A special effort will be made to reach out to our parish’s youth. Other events and presentations as appropriate will be announced in the Bulletin. Call the parish (619-276-1041) and leave a message on behalf of your group, if it is interested in a presentation.

Please pray for those Priests, Brothers and Sisters who have committed themselves to the vowed life that they be inspired by Jesus Christ to respond gen-erously in God’s gift of their vocation.”

Marriage: Love and Life In The Divine Plan: Marriage and Eucharist

“A marriage that is truly in Christ, a marriage

upon which his school of gratitude and openness has left its mark of joy and warmth, is a sign of the Kingdom that is coming. It is a blessing to the couple, to their children, and to everyone who knows them. It offers a sign of hope and a loving witness to human dignity in a world where hope often seems absent and human dignity is often de-graded. It is a sign of the Kingdom because the love of Christ moves the married couple to ever greater heights of love.” To read the document go to http://www.usccb.org/loveandlife/.

BE INSPIRED AND UPLIFTED In celebration of Black History Month, St. David’s Episcopal Church, 5050 Milton Street, will proudly presents the Martin Luther King Community Choir San Diego, Inc., in a pro-gram of Afirican-American Spirituals and Gospels that have made this choir the best of its kind in San Diego. The choir sings original and cover songs ranging from Gospel to con-temporary worship, accompanied by piano and percus-sion, with 60 to 80 voices. The concert is free but freewill offerings will be accepted.

A Stewardship of Love

The Greeting Card Association estimates that over one billion Valentine cards will be sent again this year, cele-brating love and loving relationships. As with many holi-day observances, the exact origins of St. Valentine’s Day are uncertain. Tradition places the third century Roman bishop at the heart of a conflict between the Church and the reigning Roman emperor Claudius II. The emperor outlawed marriage to ensure a large contingent of sol-diers for his army. It is believed by many that St. Valen-tine was imprisoned himself for refusing to comply with the edict, choosing instead to perform marriage ceremo-nies secretly. From prison, he supposedly sent a note to member of the jailer’s family inscribed. “From your Valen-tine.”

At the close of the fifth century, Pope Gelasius honored the memory of Valentine by replacing a pagan Roman practice – young men and women were paired for a year through a lottery system – with one that encouraged healthy relationships and identified Valentine as the pa-tron saint for the new ‘lottery’. Rather than filling in a box with the names of young men and women, the Pope add-ed the names of saints of the Church. In the year that followed the drawing, each participant was expected to follow the example of the saint whose name was chosen from the container. Today we send over a billion cards, tons of candy and miles of flowers. Maybe we should share something more substantive. A commitment of a year, emulating the life of a saint – now that would be quite a life to offer the love of your life.

Imagine relationships typified by generosity, unselfish behavior, sensitivity, mercy, personal sacrifice and grace. Imagine men and women living the next year like saints of the Church, as a gift to their partners. It’s an idea worth considering this Valentine’s Day. Give a stewardship gift of unselfish love. “If we love one another, God remains in us, and His love is brought to perfection in us.” Oh, and by the way, the overwhelming majority of those billion cards will be sent by women. Men, do a little shopping.
