From the Desk of Father Jonathan

Last week I was leading morning prayer at our school and I asked the children....from the kinder-garten to eighth grade if they could tell me what feast we celebrated the prior Sunday and what feast the Church would celebrate the upcoming Sunday. I started with the eighth graders and they correctly said that last week was the celebration of the Feast of the Epiphany. But they didn't know the feast for the upcoming Sunday. I went down the line... 7th grade, 6th, 5th.....nobody knew. To keep them guessing, and now confident that no-body would come up with the right answer, I prom-ised a pizza party for whatever class guessed cor-rectly. It was a kindergartener who raised his hand and said, "Fr. Jonathan, next Sunday we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord.". Wow! His classmates cheered wildly. The eighth graders stood in silent awe.

This kindergartener can teach us a good spiritual lesson: follow the Liturgical calendar. The Church offers us a path of deep spirituality in the Litur-gy. For example, we are now in "Ordinary Time". And before you know it, we will be in Lent! Over the next six weeks or so, leading up to Ash Wednesday on March 6th, we focus on the basics of our Christian faith. We deepen our pray-er life. We meditate on the public ministry of the Lord. I like to look at this time as a spiritual workout routine to get our souls ready for the great adventure of Lent, Holy Week, and Resurrection!

I can't promise a pizza party for every parishioner who knows the Liturgical calendar as well as our kindergarteners, but I can promise you that if you tune in to where we are in this Liturgical calendar and where we are going, your friendship with God will blossom!

God bless, Father Jonathan

P.S. A special remembrance and prayer for our parishioners from the Dominican Republic as we celebrate their patroness, Our Lady of Altagracia.

+REST IN PEACE+ Pray for Francisco Marrero and all the faithful departed

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — As a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so God rejoices in the chosen ones (Isaiah 62:1-5). Psalm — Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations (Psalm 96). Second Reading — All the varied gifts in the Christian community are from one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). Gospel — Rejoicing at a wedding celebration in Cana, Jesus replenishes the wine supply (John 2:1-11). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The cause of church unity is commended to Chris-tians for prayer and action every year around this time. This week is not so much to focus on the many divisions within the Christian family, but on bonds of faith and mission. Even though Christians have always shown an inclination to fracture, spin off, and mutate into new ex-pressions, recent history shows some new points of con-vergence and agreement. Catholics are more firmly root-ed in the word of God, for example, and many Protestants are more likely to celebrate Communion than in years past. Some denominations are merging and pooling re-sources, and people from various traditions are collabo-rating on projects. The call of this week is to be mindful of the diversity of our traditions and customs while treasuring what we hold in common. The old advice to “lighten up” is good medicine, because sometimes our differences are delight-ful and amusing. If someone says, “Let us pray,” a Catho-lic might close the eyes, bow the head and fold hands; a Protestant reach out and clasp hands with the person in the next chair; and someone belonging to an Orthodox tradition might stand up with eyes wide open. Each has taken a different path, but the goal is always the same. This is a week not for focusing on the well‑worn paths of divergence, but for mutual delight in a common goal.

ST. MARIANNE COPE also known as Saint Marianne of Molokaʻi, was a Ger-man-born American religious sister, member of the Sisters of St Francis of Syracuse, New York, and administrator of its St. Joseph's Hospital in the city. Known also for her charitable works, in 1883 she relocated with six other sisters to Hawaiʻi to care for persons suffering Hansen's Disease on the island of Molokaʻi and aid in developing the medical infrastructure in Hawaiʻi. Despite direct contact with the patients over many years, Cope did not contract the disease.
