Almighty and Most Merciful Father, we come before You, acknowledging our sins, our shortcomings, and our breaking of our Covenant with You.

Not only have we done things we ought not to have done, said things we ought not to have said, left undone so many things we ought to have done and been silent when we should have witnessed for You.

Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes and pretended not to see the injustices, the racism and the evil which pervade our everyday lives.

We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for liberation which come from the lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed – even our own Black brothers and sisters!

Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love and worship giving Your Name the praise forevermore.

To All Our Visitors ... To all who mourn and need comforting ... To all who are friendless and want friendship ... To all who are oppressed and need liberation; and to whosoever will come, Trinity opens its doors. Thank you for coming, and may God bless you.

Today's Maafa Music

BALANTA A dance dedicated to the Black youth of Chicago encouraging them

to continue to stand and Fight for Justice, Freedom and Equalilty!

Choreography and Arrangement: Uche Omoniyi

Musicians: Idris Daniels, Papa Mangue Ibrahim Sylla, Akinjobi Davis, Dav’id Braswell, Jeremiah Sutton

The Balanta people live in Guinea Bissau, the Casamance region of Senegal, and the Gambia. The name, Balanta or Balante’, translates as Those Who Resist. They are known for their fierce militaristic skills and elaborate social institutions. They are one of the only ethnic groups in West Africa who were able to retain their land and live outside the colonial state. The Balanta people are fishermen, herders, and cultivators. They grow millet, rice, peanuts, cashews, and fruit. Many folkloric dances are done by men and women when they participate in elaborate life cycle ceremonies in which family and community celebrate events such as birth, circumcision, marriage, and death. Most of these events, especially funerals, entail the sacrifice of livestock for consumption and ritual offering and the consumption of palm wine or rum. Dance is the quintessential form of cultural expression for the Balanta and many West African ethnic groups. African dance by definition is participatory, one does not go to watch a dance; one goes to dance. ~Uche Omoniyi

Pastor's WordFor I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:35-40

Beloved, The kindness, generous, selfless spirit, and energy of this congregation is astounding! Time after time, the Village of Trinity United Church of Christ pours its prayers, heart, treasures, and time into efforts to help those in need. As the temperatures dropped, we opened our doors to those who would otherwise be outside. We prepared meals and gathered clothing, food, and provisions that will carry them through this dangerous cold spell and beyond. Partnering with the City of Chicago and Catholic Charities, Trinity United Church of Christ became a warming center and overnight shelter. Volunteers flooded this church and dropped off goods, prepared food, inventoried items, filled backpacks, entertained children, prayed with the children and for our guests, and created a welcoming, warm, and God-filled space. For those who did not come to our space, we went to theirs; volunteers filled their cars and our vans and transported those outside into our Warming Center. Other volunteers distributed much needed warm hats, scarves, and gloves, all the while praying for their safety. For those for whom this was temporary, Trinity provided the stop-gap. For those whose needs went beyond this cold spell, Trinity worked with city agencies to provide long-term shelter and the promise of permanent housing. This is the greatest church this side of the Jordan! Below is a small message our photographer, Dawn Stephens, shared about herexperience last week. Simply saying, “Thank you” seems too small for the grand gestures you make each time our community is in need. Your presence, witness, time, talent, tithes, and offerings continue to bless us, our community, and the community at large, and I pray that God will continue to bless you and your family in all that you do and pursue. Asking you to imagine,

Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, Senior Pastor

The day is done, the lights are out. I am just getting home, a bit tired and cold, so I am calling it a day. It has been a very eye opening and heart touching day. From meeting some truly amazing people who genuinely care about others, to a young man who is a licensed barber show up to cut hair because he saw someone post our outreach on social media, to seeing a 3-year-old thank God for the people, the food, and being warm, to fighting tears as a Marine veteran was brought in a wheelchair from the streets, who apologized for not being more presentable and offering to pay for service. My offer of a haircut to him made his entire face light up, as he said, “I haven’t had a haircut in SO long!” My heart hurt! As a veteran, this should never be!! My day ended as I listened to the testimony of a wonderful man who has been providing delicious meals for everyone since yesterday. He was giving back with a spirit that was truly amazing. He said “I give back in any way I can, because I understand. I too found myself homeless.” His story is a real testimony. The temperature outside is -13 without the wind chill, but the warmth I experienced today makes you forget just how cold it is outside.

10 SELF-CARE HABITS FOR THE NEW YEAR

5. Have An Accountability Partner: I am a huge believer in accountability, as it helps you to always have a friend and someone who will help you stay on track with your goals. Reach out to a close friend and offer up the opportunity to be accountability partners. You can have an accountability partner for really anything, but definitely, have one who will check in with you to see how you’re doing with self-care and whatever goals you’re working on. It’s always nice to have someone to lean on!

FEBRUARYMatthew 22:36-40 (NRSV)36“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” 37He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38This is the greatest and first commandment. 39And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

MARCH2 Chronicles 7:14 (NRSV)14if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

AprilJames 1:12 (NIV)Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

MAYHebrews 11:1-3 (NIV)1Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2This is what the ancients were commended for. 3By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

JUNEHebrews 11:4 (NIV)4By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.

JULY Hebrews 11:5-6 (NIV)5By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. 6And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

AUGUST Hebrews 11:7-19 (NIV)7By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith. 8By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even

though he did not know where he was going. 9By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. 12And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.

13All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. 14People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

17By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” 19Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.

SEPTEMBERMicah 6:8 (NIV)He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

OCTOBERHebrews 10:23 (NIV)Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

NOVEMBER Luke 16:10-12 (ESV)“One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful in that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own?

DECEMBERMatthew 25:21 (NIV)“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
