Greetings Trinity Family,

As this Advent season is upon us; we all are in anticipation of the celebration of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ’s, birth celebration.

First, thank you for your continued support of your church, Trinity United Church of Christ. As your Executive Minister of Stewardship, I know as well as anyone, without you, there is no church.

During this season, tithes and offerings, and gifts to our church are typically at the highest of the year. In the normal financial cycle of the church, we are generally able to overcome any budget deficits during this time. Recently, we have faced challenges to that normal cycle:

• Our Raise the Roof project caused our Sanctuary to be quite cold for a couple of Sundays in late November, resulting in an attendance drop

• The first two Sundays in December were both “Snow Days,” with many of our members choosing to worship from home via our Stream

• And for today, our friendly weather person is predicting a very cold day

Trinity Family (and friends), your consistent and generous tithes and offerings make Trinity UCC ministry possible! Please remember, that on any Sunday that you cannot attend in person, consider making your tithe and offering using one of our electronic means - through Secure Give or Access ACS. Of course, sending checks through the U.S. Mail is still completely acceptable. We are at the end of the year and our gifts over the next two weeks will determine whether we will meet our 2016 financial obligations.

God bless you and God bless Trinity UCC.

Rev. Mark A. SmithExecutive Minister of Stewardship

BUILD YOURSSaw this bank advertisement plastered against a rare vacant building located along the Division Street Commercial Retail Corridor in one of Chicago’s hottest neighborhoods: Wicker Park.

In 2017, the Endeleo Institute is focusing its attention on rebuilding the Washington Heights Commercial Corridor by first addressing the area’s housing stock. As such, we are extremely excited about our recent partnership with the Cook County Land Bank.

While distributing Farmers Market literature this summer, we identified several vacant properties on solid neighborhood blocks, and according to 2014 data from Chicago-based Woodstock Institute, Washington Heights was near the top of the list in foreclosure auctions in 2014. Woodstock is a leading nonprofit research and policy organization in the areas of fair lending, wealth creation and financial systems reform. In its report, it explains that foreclosure auctions signal the completion of the foreclosure process, at which point, properties officially become lender-owned or real estate-owned (REO).

The report goes on to say during 2011-2012, completed foreclosures in Washington Heights were up a whopping 104.8%! What we saw this past summer is the manifestation of those numbers, and, like the report suggested, creative solutions such as the Cook County Land Bank are sorely needed to reverse the concentration of foreclosure activity in low-wealth communities of color, for they pose serious barriers to recovery in areas that badly need help.

Most promising is the fact that the Land Bank identifies Washington Heights as one of its top promising areas for housing growth recovery. With that in mind, Endeleo is working closely with Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer to strategically restore vacant properties back to productive use and build equity and wealth in the neighborhood. Thus, if you are remotely interested, we will be simultaneously building a necessary potential pool of qualified applicants to occupy these viable single-family properties. Please call our office at 773-966-1508 to add your name. To revitalize our commercial corridor, we need to first restore our housing stock. In 2017, we will Build Ours.

Endeleo is progress, growth, and development

2016 Churchwide Theme and ScripturesTheme: “The Fruit of The Spirit: Taste and See!”

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)

January – LoveHe answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27 (NRSV)

February – JoyNehemiah said, “Go and enjoy good food and sweet drinks. Send some to people who have none, because today is a holy day to the Lord. Don’t be sad, because the joy of the Lord will make you strong.” Nehemiah 8:10 (NCV)

March – PeaceBlessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9 (NIV)

April – PatienceWait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!

Psalm 27:14 (NKJV)

May – Kindness“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other. Zechariah 7:9-10 (NLT)

June – GoodnessWho is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.

James 3:13-14 (NIV)

July – FaithfulnessJesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 (NLT)

August – GentlenessBy the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul, who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world. For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 2 Corinthians 10:1-3 (NIV)

September – Self ControlSo prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. 1 Peter 1:13-14 (NLT)

October – Forgive One Another Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31-32 (NLT)

November – Service One AnotherMy brothers and sisters, God called you to be free, but do not use your freedom as an excuse to do what pleases your sinful self. Serve each other with love. Galatians 5:13 (NCV)

December – Build Up One AnotherSo encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NLT)
