THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

50 WEEKS OF PRAYER DURING OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR

All of this Gospel’s gloom-and-doom! It’s terrifying! Brings a lot of tension. Does it bring change in be-havior, religious conversion? Does fear form a lasting relationship with the One who loves us the most and whom we should love the most? If I want to start a relationship with anyone, especially God, fear is not a good motive.

True enough long ago out of fear I confessed sins I wasn’t sure I even committed. I was afraid of losing God’s friendship and wanted my bases covered. But today, if I want to influence you to a deeper relation-ship with God, spouse, in-laws, neighbor, or pastor (!), fear of endless torment really does not work. Just try to send someone on a “Guilt Trip” in 2015!

Turning to virtue might be the answer. Guide people to make the right decisions and to do the right because it is the right. Guide people toward virtue. Lead people toward integrity. We all want people who walk the talk. Model what you say when you say “I believe in One God.” After you say: “I believe in God”, how do you act? After you say: “I have a relationship with Jesus”, how do you act?

Prayer, reading Scripture, being present to Jesus during exposition of the Sacrament lead to conversion. Thus we live our lives vir-tuously. Let us pray to be people of virtue, people of mercy, people who are faithful, brave and courageous when we encounter Jesus especially as he is in our neighbor. After you say: “I believe!” how do you live your life giving thanks to God for all He has given you?

The mission of our parish is: “to live as a people of God with Christ at the center of our lives through liturgy, faith formation, and community.” To that end we have knowledgeable, informative, and challenging speakers! Please, if you are able, attend the speak-ers this week. Monday, November 16 at 7:00PM – John Madden, PhD will speak on Jesus Christ in Art and History. Tuesday, No-vember 17, Sr. Nadine McGuinness, CSJ will give a lecture on the Papal Encyclical, Laudato SI’ – our care for our common home. These are two of the best speakers here for us to challenge, guide, and enlighten our understanding and grow in our faith with us.

Please mark your calendar and be present for our Thanksgiving Day Mass, on Thanksgiving Thursday, November 26 at 9:00AM. If you wish, bring bread and wine that you will share to be blessed - note, some delicious wine might be taken! On Friday, November 27, there will be one Mass, at 8:00AM.

Advent Penance confessions will take place in the churches of our Deanery – as follows: December 14, St. Anthony Claret in Anaheim, December 15, St. Philip Benizi in Fullerton, December 16, St. Justin Martyr in Anaheim, December 17, St. Boniface in Anaheim, and

December 21, St. Pius in Buena Park. Each evening will begin with confession at 7:00PM. Many priests will be available to you.

Welcome our new Business Manager, Mr. Esteban Jimenez! I am thankful to the Diocese of Orange which was a huge help in sending his resume to me. Our Pastoral Center at the Diocese truly is pastoral. Esteban is married with three children, including a girl named....Juliana! He comes with eight years of parish experience in the Diocese of San Bernardino. He has served as parish bookkeeper and business manager for four San Bernardino parishes, including two differ-ent parishes at the same time. He has a B.S. in Business Administration from UC Riverside and is working on a MS in Parish Administration. He worked in the public sector as a business manager before coming to Church ministry. Welcome Esteban – we are glad you are with us!

November 14th / 15th—Parish Building Fund

November 21st/22nd Diocesan National Needs Collection

Each parish is part of the Church Universal; it is the Catholic Church in a particular place. The bishops of the United States created the Na-tional Needs Collection so that, by combining resources, we can more effectively carry out our mission as Catholics. Each collection is worthy of your support. Each collection represents our community of faith at work in the world, saving souls and improving lives.

The bishops encourage us to view the National Needs Collection in the light of stewardship and of sharing. God has given us our light and our prosperity, all we need and more. It is right and just that we give something back through these collections, helping people in our own country and around the world to live better and to grow in the love of Jesus.

MAGNIFICAT PRAYER BREAKFAST

For most people, the holidays are highly anticipated days of fami-ly celebration, reunion, gift-giving and fun. Others dread the holi-days or simply endure them. For them the holidays represent loss and loneliness. If you have recently lost a loved one or you have had losses in the past that cause you to associate sorrow with the holiday you are invited to: “Good Grief! Here Comes Christ-mas! This is a simple time of retreat and reflection for persons who have suffered loss and are experiencing bereavement. In addition to reflection, practical suggestions for how to “be” dur-ing the holiday season will be offered. Treat yourself to a little TLC as we move through this busy time.

Christ Cathedral Pastoral Center, Room 1AB 13280 Chapman Avenue, Garden Grove, CA 92840

There is no cost for the retreat, and there is a choice of two retreat dates: Thursday, December 3: 9:30 – 11:30 AM or

“GOOD GRIEF! HERE COMES CHRISTMAS!”

Thanksgiving Days are ones at which the most family members generally come together during the course of the year. Since several generations are present, it is a superb opportunity to have the senior family members tell their own family stories: where did their parents and grandparents come from? When and how? What was life like in those days? Invite them to share some of their favorite family stories. Through this family shar-ing process, it will become obvious that all our families are im-migrant families—little different from the immigrant families living in our midst today.
