Faculty NewsProf. Amanda Cook, assistant professor of music, successfully defended her dissertation and completed her doctorate in music at Indiana University over the spring break. Congratulations Amanda - what an accomplishment!

Over spring break, twenty-four students and two faculty members, Aajaan Selena (Dr. Kohel) and Aajaan Angela (Dr. Firkus), enjoyed various locations around Thailand. The focus for their trip was sustainable tourism, which included preserving or trying to restore positive aspects of Thailand’s cultural, social, environmental, and economic systems. Following are some of their successes.

Cultural and Social: While there, the students and faculty participated in Community-Based Tourism, in which they learned about and supported the cultural practices and social network of villagers in Baan Mae Kampong. They learned about tea cultivation and production, were treated to family style meals at villagers’ homes, and purchased local goods – the earnings to be shared for the good of the village.

Environmental: The students and faculty stayed at green establishments and tried to be mindful of employing green practices. For example, they stayed at hotels in which the lights and air-conditioning were powered by room keys, thus making it more difficult to waste electricity when out of the room, or where the electricity was turned off for four hours each day. They travelled by an overnight train between Ayutthaya and Chiang Mai and by an overnight bus between Chiang Mai and Hua Hin, instead of by plane.

The students and faculty engaged in projects that encouraged biodiversity, in which they introduced or took care of organisms that are in danger of becoming extinct. For example, they planted wild orchids in the forest surrounding Maejo

University and fed and bathed rescued elephants at the Elephant Nature Center. They planted coral in the Gulf of Thailand. They also fed and delivered turtles from a nursery to the Gulf of Thailand and picked up garbage along the shore.

Economic: The students and faculty tried to be mindful of purchasing locally made products from local vendors. At markets, they asked where products were made and by whom, looked at tags to try to garner the information, or sought to see if vendors were making their products themselves. They observed if items were mass produced within a market or across different markets. They bought, snacked and dined on food from the fresh market and street vendors.

Student HappeningsBarcelona

Dr. Sarah Quick, student Namgay Zam, and Dr. Kanji Watanabe visited Mr. Henk Hobbelink, a well-known environmental activist of a NGO, GRAIN, on March 11, in Barcelona, Spain. The group discussed the environmental significance of traditional farming culture (with their own seeds) maintained by local famers, which has been replaced by agricultural businesses with GM foods.

Student Happenings (cont.)Foreign Language Week

Cottey celebrated National Foreign Language Week, March 2-March 6, 2015. Alpha Mu Gamma National Foreign Language Society and students in Dr. Bourbon’s Chicano Experience class came together to celebrate that week with the Cottey Community. These students and members alike created collages describing what foreign

languages mean to them, and shared some yummy cake as well. A special thank you to Yajaira Rodriguez, Shirley Arreola-Kern, Maria Ceballos, and Andee Hilton.

Although she holds titles ranging from economist to professor to CEO, Dr. Wheaton is most vocal about the fact that you don’t need a title, unlimited time, or abundant money to change the world. Her greatest commitment in life is working with students, community members, colleagues, and friends to put their unique and varied talents into action to create cataclysmic social change.

Wheaton holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Temple University, and an M.S. in international business and trade from Grambling State University. She is an economics senior lecturer at Southern Methodist University (SMU), and the founder and CEO of Equip the Saints, a non-profit consultancy that works to strengthen nonprofit organizations worldwide and to equip world changers to fulfill their personal missions.

Dr. Wheaton’s address is titled “Guiders: Leading the Way by Closing the Gaps.” A short reception will follow in the foyer of the Center for the Arts.
