It was the night before Christmas andHermione was trying desperately to be agood hostess. Scorpius and Rose hadgotten engaged less than a month ago andthis was the first time that all four of theirparents would be sharing a meal together.Had it only been the six of them,Hermione was certain she could havemanaged the evening in a spectacularfashion. However, when Ron had insistedon bringing his new girlfriend, PansyParkinson, to the dinner and Astoria hadshown up with her latest flame, JoséDurante, a twenty-five year old BrazilianQuidditch player, who didn't speak aword of English, things had gotten tense.

Although Hermione was no longer in lovewith Ron, it hurt to see him with someone

else when her own love life was sobarren. She and Ron had separated duringRose's third year at Hogwarts – the sameyear that Draco and Astoria Malfoy hadgotten a divorce. Apparently, theircommon problems at home had turnedRose and Scorpius from being rivals toconfidents. They had slipped into an easyfriendship and during their sixth year hadfallen in love. Now they planned to marryand wanted their parents to get along wellenough so that things wouldn't beawkward at the wedding. This ChristmasEve dinner party was Hermione'scontribution to the effort.

Unfortunately, things had been difficultfrom the moment the guests arrived. Theseating chart alone had been a nightmare.

Hermione sat at the head of the table, which meant that Draco, the only otherunattached person at the gathering wasplaced at the end of the table, making itlook as if they were together. To keep thethree couples close to each other and keepall the ex-spouses separated, Hermionehad placed Rose and Scorpius acrossfrom each other at her end of the table, leaving Draco next to Pansy and José, andRon and Astoria sandwiched in betweentheir children and their dates.

Of course, Draco had interpreted his placeat the dinner table as some sort of slight. Therefore, he spent the meal alternatelyglaring at Hermione and flirting withPansy, which made Ron splutter and huffand Pansy twitter like a dolt. Astoria

divided her time between discussingincredibly expensive and impracticalwedding suggestions – like building areplica of Buckingham Palace for thereception – and feeding small bits of foodfrom her plate to José.

Scorpius dealt with the tension by pushinghis food around his plate and drinkingseveral glasses of wine as quickly aspossible. By the time the main course wasserved, he had the glazed look of someonewho was in their own 'happy place' anduntouchable by the rest of the world.Rose, on the other hand, had a maniacalsmile plastered on her face. Hermioneworried that it was only a matter of timebefore the girl drew her wand and startedhexing people.

In the hope of heading off any possiblecatastrophe, Hermione asked Rose to helpher with the pudding. As soon as theyentered the kitchen, Rose began to rant."This is a disaster! How can I subjectmyself, Scorpius, and any possiblechildren we have to such a horrific mess."

"It is our first meal together, sweetheart;things are bound to improve with time.Besides it isn't as if any dueling has goneon at the table," Hermione replied tryingto reassure her daughter.

"If I have to spend another thirty minuteslistening to Dad and Draco flirting withPansy Parkinson, I'll end up spending myhoneymoon in Azkaban for committing anact of premeditated violence," Rose

threatened, as she dug through the kitchencabinet for the dessert plates.

Before Hermione could reply to her,Scorpius stuck his head in the kitchen. "Doyou need any help?"

"We're fine. Go back to the dining room;we'll be out in a minute."

"Please, don't make me go back out there,"Scorpius pouted, trying to look like anabused puppy. The effect was ruined, however, by his slight swaying due to thealcohol. "I think it's dangerous to mymorals."

"You're such a wuss," Rose teased him, asshe placed the plates on the counter.

"Easy for you to say," he replied, wrapping an arm around her waist beforenuzzling her neck. "It isn't your motherwho is dating someone too young to cut uphis own steak."

Hermione smiled at the two of them. Shewas thrilled that Rose had fallen in loveand appeared to be in such a successfulrelationship. "Perhaps, your mother justhas a nurturing soul."

"Astoria doesn't have a nurturing bone inher body," Draco drawled as he walkedinto the kitchen. "I'm certain that Scorpiuswould have starved to death if it hadn'tbeen for the House Elves."

"Malfoy," Hermione huffed. "Get out of

here."

Draco ignored her. He picked up theplates and handed them to Scorpius andthen handed the pudding to Rose. "Takethese into the dining room and startserving; we'll follow."

Scorpius moved off to do his father'sbidding, but Rose shot a look of concerntowards Hermione. "It's alright, darling;we'll just be a moment."

As soon as they were alone, Draco backedHermione up against the counter. "I'mextremely annoyed with you, Granger."

"Oh, dear," Hermione mocked. "How willI ever be able to sleep tonight?"

Page 12: Christmas Miracle

"I told you that I wanted to be your dinnercompanion tonight," he whispered huskily.

"And I told you this wasn't a date. It is aparty to celebrate Scorpius' and Rose'sengagement. Besides, it looked like youwere enjoying flirting with Pansy. "

Draco smirked and ran a finger alongsidethe edge of her jaw. "Jealous?"

Hermione refused to answer. She pushedby him and re-entered the dining room, trying to ignore her racing heart.

Thirty minutes later, after dessert wasfinished, engagement gifts for the newcouple were handed out. Ron gave them asliver topper for their wedding cake.

Astoria got the couple an etiquette book.Draco gave them a voucher for a thousandGalleons. And Hermione gave them anornament for their Christmas tree. "It'sbeautiful," Rose smiled, lifting thedelicate glass ball out of the box.

"It will light up and glow when the roomis full of love," Hermione told herdaughter with a small smile.

"Thanks, Mum!" Rose grinned, leaningover and giving Hermione a quick hug.

"Why isn't it glowing now?" Ron askedwhen the ornament got passed to him.

"Obviously, there are people in the roomwho don't care for each other," Pansy

replied, patting his hand as if he were asmall child. "Like you and Hermione."

Ron looked confused. "Hermione and Icare for each other."

"What?!" Pansy squeaked, pushing backher chair and rising shakily from the table."You told me you were over her!"

"Pansy!" Ron gasped, reaching for herarm, only to have her jerk it away. "I justmeant that we are still close. Hermioneand I still care about what happens to eachother. We aren't in love!"

Pansy wasn't listening. "You're a berk,Ron Weasley!" she shouted beforeDisapparating.

Page 15: Christmas Miracle

"Shit," Ron cursed. "I've got to go. Sorry,Rose. Sorry, Hermione." Everyone at thetable watched as Ron also left with a pop.

"Is it glowing now?" Astoria asked, looking across the table at the ornament.

Draco snorted.

Astoria turned to glare at her ex-husband."You are such a git. Undoubtedly, if youleft the room the ornament would lightup."

"Undoubtedly," Draco smirked, making nomove to rise.

Rolling her eyes, Astoria rose from herseat. "Bring the trinket to brunch Sundayafternoon, Scorpius. I'm dying to see it

glow."

Scorpius nodded, leapt to his feet, andkissed his mother goodbye on the cheek.Soon afterwards, only Draco, Hermione,Rose, and Scorpius remained at the table.

"Fabulous meal, Granger. Let's not doagain," Draco snarked, starting to rise.

Before Hermione could think of somecutting comment reply, Rose gasped. "It'sglowing!" All heads turned toward theornament. It was sparkling with a brightinner light.

"It can't be," Scorpius gaped. "Unless youtwo having been holding out on us," helaughed, glancing between his father and

Hermione.

"Don't be ridiculous," Hermionesputtered, reaching for the ornament andturning it over in her hands.

"Obviously, shoddy spell work," Dracogrinned. "Never fear, Granger, I'm sureyou'll eventually figure it out. Now I'm off.Scorpius, I expect to see you and yourfiancée the day after Christmas for dinnerwith your grandparents."

The younger blond nodded in responseand with a crack Draco Disapperated.

The ornament continued to glow. "Leave ithere with me. I'll fix it," Hermione toldher daughter and future son-in-law.

Page 18: Christmas Miracle

"Sure, Mum," Rose replied, rising."Thanks for everything. Will we see youat the Burrow on Christmas?"

Hermione nodded, barely listening as shefocused on the ornament in front of her.

Rose and Scorpius exchanged smiles overthe top of her head. "Alright, see youthere," Rose stated before grabbing herScorpius' hand and Apparating away.

The glow surrounding the ornament beganto fade. As Hermione started castingdiagnostic spells on it, she wasinterrupted by a knock at her door.Frowning she rose and walked towardsthe door. The ornament started to glowagain.

"What in the world?" Hermione muttered, opening her front entrance. Her mouthdropped open slightly at the sight of Dracostanding there. With one step he closed thedistance between them, grasped her facebetween his hands, and covered her lipswith his – kissing her hungrily. It feltgood, and right, and so prefect thatHermione leaned into him, threw one armaround his neck, and kissed him back withenthusiasm.

When they finally broke apart, theornament was pulsing with light. "Howlong?" she asked, staring up into his eyesthat were dark with desire.

"For awhile," he admitted. "But it wasn'tuntil tonight – until your ornament started

Page 20: Christmas Miracle

to glow – that I began to hope you felt thesame way."

Hermione smiled at him, stood on hertiptoes, and kissed him again. He waswarm, solid, and comforting. "This is awonderful way to end a miserableevening."

"Don't be silly, Granger," Draco replied, closing the door behind him and pullingher more tightly into his arms. "This is awonderful way to begin a memorablerelationship."
