at her home. It was also Val Baldwin’s birthday so we were able to celebrate with a Pavlova cake and candles. It was a big surprise for her but an enjoyable occasion for all.

On Monday 30

th October

Jennifer Stehn hosted a work-shop where a few members got t o g e t h e r a n d s e w e d decorations on the bags that we give to the women from the DV Centre. We had an enjoyable afternoon and managed to get through a lot of work

Breast Cushions

The next breast cushion assem-bly and packing day will be held on Saturday 16

th December at

Ivanka’s home. This will be our final one for the year so we hope to complete enough cushions until we start sewing again next year either in February or March. Thank you to all the people who have contributed in any way this year and especially Maxine who hosted us while Ivanka was away.

DV Shelter

I have helped a number of people to apply for their Working with Children and Working with Vu lne rab le peop le DCSI certificates to allow them to volunteer at the DV Shelter. It appears that they may have worked out some of the glitches that were occurring and the last two applications have gone very smoothly. If anyone still needs help can you make a time with me and we can work through the process.

Dates for your diary:

Saturday 2nd

December is

our club’s Christmas Lunch where you are asked to bring a gift of around $25-$30 to be given to the women at the Shelter. It should be a gift to pamper the recipient and give her something special in her life.

Tuesday 12 December and

Thursday 14th

December we

will be wrapping the Christmas presents for the women and children.

Tuesday 19th

December is

the DV Centre Christmas party where we prepare the food and generally help with organisation on the day. I will send out an email shortly asking for help. Please could you respond promptly so that I can let the Centre staff know how much help we can give.

You all received the information about the project being run as part of Adelaide University Humanitarian Engineering and the information Dr Cris Birzer sent out about the crowd funding for water testing in Rajasthan. The contact is: http://universityofadelaide.pozible.com/project/world-first-filtration-system Our new banners “Zonta Says No To Violence Against Women” looked fabulous at the White Ribbon March and our club was well represented. Thank you to the Advocacy Committee for their initiative in purchasing them. The Finance committee have been very active in refining the processes for budget manage-ment and this will be presented in February 2018 in time for the next financial year.

The refurbishment of the linen and homewares shed at the EADVS was put forward as a project for funding by the State Government Fund my Neighbourhood program by Rev Gillies Ambler. It attracted community support and was successful, which means that the completed refurbishment will put it on a par with the clothing boutique. Great news! Exciting news. A new member, Ashleigh Bandiera, has just announced her engagement.

This week Wendy and I attended the posthumous installation of Dr Alice Rigney into the SA Women’s Honour Roll. Other members of the Awards Committee have been attending various school and university presentation nights. Our annual Amelia Earhart event will be held in the park on Sunday 21

st of January. More details

attached. Thank you to everyone and their contributions to the club and activities this year and look for-ward to seeing you in the new year.

ADVOCACY Jennifer Stehn (Coordinator)

We MUST BE

COURAGEOUS

Elca and many others are work-ing through a program called Peacemakers to support women to escape from violence in India.

Read more about the program on the web. An easy way to be well informed about all issues for women is to s u bsc r ib e t o W OM EN ’ S AGENDA, a free media service posting directly to your In Box. Many thanks to all Advocacy Committee members for their work supporting all Club members to be involved in the 16 Days of Activism. The Awareness Ribbons will be on sale again at the Christmas Lunch for the cost recovery price of $1.

I was inspired this week to read about ELCA GROBLER, the F o u n d e r o f M y C h o i c e Foundation, an Opportunity International partner organization that aims to stop violence against wom en and end hum an trafficking. Her latest post echoes our commitments here in Adelaide in the middle of THE 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM: “Violence against women” isn’t a women’s rights issue, it’s a human rights issue. In India, more women are killed each year by domestic violence than by malaria, war and acci-dents combined. I’m driven by a righteous anger about the abuse and injustice so many women face today. With so much going so right, how can so much be going so horribly wrong?

How did we get to the point in our modern society where al-most half of Indian women face domestic violence? In 2017, we still have close to 50 per cent of the girls in India who marry, marry as children. How did we get to the point where 50 million girls in India are missing? Killed as infants or foetus. Why aren’t we, in 2017, at a point where we can break the cycle of violence against women?

Why do we, as a society, allow violence to ruin the lives of mil-lions of women and their chil-dren? We must build awareness of the magnitude of this human rights crisis. Violence against women costs the global community tril-lions of dollars a year, but it’s not the economic cost that should drive action, it’s the hu-man cost.

Thanks to the Zontians on the day – Kaye, Hoda and Wendy as well as representatives from ZC Adelaide Flinders there was much discussion with women who wanted to find out what we do. We had 23 people sign up to receive the Zonta Says No emails and 18 indicated interest in being contacted by a Zonta club near them. I referred the names and emails, based on their suburb, to ZC Adelaide Flinders, ZC Adelaide Torrens, ZC Para District and ZC Mt Barker as well as to our own club membership committee. All clubs have indicated their willingness to make contact. The committee has yet to have a debrief meeting with the Lady Mayoress but the indication is that the event may be repeated next year. I would recommend that if this occurs it should be Area 2 Director who represents

HERSTORY –

Lady Mayoress event to

celebrate the

contribution of women

Thanks to the vision and drive of the Lady Mayoress of Adelaide and a multitude of committee meetings with representatives of five womens’ organisations, the event held 4 November was a great success. Zonta; Soroptomists; YWCA; National Council of Women SA; Business & Professional Women each had the opportu-nity to present their organisation and honour the commitment of their members. I spoke briefly of our international projects, breast cushions, birthing kits and our advocacy project Walk in My Shoes. I also invited people to sign up to receive an email for each of the 16 days of Activism to be part of our club advocacy project. We had a Zonta stand in the foyer with banners, brochures, Zonta postcards etc.

Zonta clubs in SA. This year Zonta was included because our club had an association with the Lord Mayor and I was appointed as the club’s representative, but tried to make the event inclusive for members of all the local Zonta clubs.

MARCH 2018 MEETING speaker Review by Akhter Rahman

As a result of the project, children’s behaviour at school improved: they learnt to work, listen and reduced interjecting.

So Angela and Jolana decided to spend as much time with the teachers as possible to help with their pronunciation (of English) and get them to read all of the books they brought with them.

They also ran a few art project days as well. And from Angela, of course, some singing (she runs a choir or two back in her home town and teaches the piano as well).

Gradually some villagers started to grow vegetables. New varieties as well thus improving their diet, from just plain Daahl Bhaat.

and pay for new teachers, increase the Caretaker’s salary and renovate the school build-ings. Lee and Angela found charities which came on board.

The volunteers replenished the school with new supplies. They bought buckets, jugs and a container for the sugar as the mice ate a huge hole in the last plastic one. They also bought books, pencils and a pencil sharpener for the school. The group also realized that they needed to help the community with many deeper issues in the village eg., water supply, sanita-tion, food, adequate clothing. A water project was agreed to when the local Aandhimul committee met with the group of villagers from the neighbouring village (Koreka) and they all signed an agreement allowing a water project to begin.

Angela Sharp’s

presentation on

“The Andhimul Project”

to be delivered at

our March 2018 club

meeting

It is a project developed by some vo lun te e rs f r om d i f f e ren t countries, to improve the lot of the people living in a village, Andhimul, near Bandipur in Nepal, one of the poorest villages in the world. It was conceived in 2008 by Mon Bahadur Bhujel, a Primary School teacher from Nepal (and who has family in the village); Lee Allan from the UK, a volunteer in Nepal; Angela Sharp from Austra-lia; Jolana Whyte from the Czech R e p u b l i c a n d L o u |Boddington from the UK, all volunteers in Nepal.

Leann was invited to simply talk about herself rather than about Zonta, but of course all Zontians know that the two are intricately intertwined. When Leann was first invited to jo in Zon ta , she qu ick ly recognised that the values and priorities gelled with her own. She has enjoyed the fellowship and been inspired by the strength, knowledge and commitment of fellow club members. Apart from being elected to the D23 Nominating Committee for the next biennium, Leann has been in a team with Pru Blackwell, Naomi Reschke, Cintra Amos and Jenny Weaver that has been instrumental in developing a concept that was voted in at the District Conference in Geelong. It is a project that will consolidate and build on strengths and ideas of clubs and provide resources to support clubs to continue the great work they are already doing. Leanne is a senior social worker and team leader at Fleurier Families where she designs, monitors and evaluates programs that support families and children. FF is primarily an early interven-tion service and the clientele comprises families who are at the pointy end of the Child Protection System. Leanne’s duties include: supervising staff and volunteers with a case load of home visits and providing group work for women and children who have been affected by domestic vio-lence.

More recently Leann’s own mother was raped by a group of returned soldiers after WW2. This caused such a scandal in a small country town that she was given no choice but to marry one of her attackers. Unsurprisingly, he turned out to be a brutal and mentally ill man and her life with him was horrendous until after the marriage was finished, her mother was fortunate in meeting a kind and gentle man and went on to have 3 more children. Leann admires the courage of her mother and sees her self-respect as the key feature in her survival. Looking forward into the future, Leann used the example of her own daughter as a modern woman who has faith in her own worth and has been enormously successful in her life.

Every strong woman that

we can empower can

support us to build a more

equal society…… Zonta

can play a huge part in

helping these stories to be

told and in forming a

supportive system that al-

lows women to heal,

strong and considerate

men to thrive and children

to know their worth in life.

She facilitates programs for girls and boys addressing respectful relationships. Added to this, she is responsible for collaborative pathways, stra-tegic planning and collective impact plans that aim to make a difference at a population level. Leanne is the council’s Child Safety Officer and a trainer in Safe Environments. On a personal level, Leanne is a strong woman with an unwaver-ing focus on empowering women, particularly in cases of dysfunction and disadvantage, including intergenerational pov-erty, trauma and patterns of be-haviour that are really hard to break. She outlined how the concepts of privilege and em-powerment sit so well with the ideals of Zonta in breaking cycles and supporting women who suffer domestic Violence. Looking both past and future, Leann recognises the privileges she had in making her own choices. Only five generations ago her ancestor, Catherine Rowe, a 16-year-old Irish girl, was sentenced to transportation to Australia when she and her father were convicted for stealing chickens to feed their starving family. Catherine’s fate was to be sent to a workhouse in Hobart to serve a seven year sentence. Leanne was moved to tears when she discovered Cath-erine’s records at the Female Factory in Hobart. Miraculously and despite the risks of infant mortality and abuse, Catherine lived to the age of 72 and bore seven chil-dren. Moving forward a couple of generations, Leann’s grandfa-ther and great aunts were aban-doned by their father following the death of their mother and lived in the Goodwood orphan-age.

HAPPENINGS DURING THE MONTH

A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

The invitation said it was a cultural experience. Bev Gum, Julie Hughes and Val Baldwin accepted and attended what was a fundraiser to send a container of old RAH material to the villages in PNG with which Shila (soil child project) is familiar . We were surrounded by artifacts and the music of the country at all times. The program was a mixture of culture and facts. Shila started the evening by introducing groups who were present and spent time explaining that we were there because Zonta Adelaide had invited her to speak about her program and had made a donation to the Project which was really appreciated. Over the evening we were entertained by the Morobe singing group, Hills Girls with a Traditional Dance, the BUKA group with a dance depicting the legend of the paradise bird and a dance showing the women hunting for food. This was alternated by people speaking for a short time about work they were doing and had done for many years to do with health and nutrition in PNG. Dr. Anthony Radford who has spent 60 years go-ing to villages and working in health started his address by saying he was not surprised that Zonta was involved as we had done such great work over the years with birthing kits which had changed mortality rates so significantly. Two other health and nutrition groups spoke of their work over a number of years. While all this was happening we enjoyed a meal cooked in the PNG way. Our pork had been cooked in the ground, corn beef ground and cooked with spinach and a variety of chicken dishes, etc. We three agreed that it certainly was a cultural experience, we were glad that we had gone and really proud of the way Zonta service had been acknowledge during the night.

MORIALTA COMMUNITY QUIZ NIGHT

Many members attended the Quiz Night to raise funds for the Women’s Safety Services SA (Eastern Adelaide Domestic Violence Service). Candice Prosser (pictured left), a journalist with ABC News in Adelaide did an excellent job as Quizmaster. Attendees enjoyed the night, enthusiastically becoming involved in “heads and tails”.

One giant leap for Akhter.....

As reported by “The Senior News November 2017” “No matter who you are or how old you are, life is all about conquering the next challenge, as Akhter Rahman can attest. The Norwood clinical psychologist has become the oldest person to take on the Mega Jump at Mega Adventures Aerial Park in West Beach. Akhter was strapped into a harness before stepping out into space and an 18 metre freefall jump. She also jumped up to eight metres. “I was pretty nervous but it was great, just amazing, she said.”

WHITE RIBBON BREAKFAST 24 November 2017

Bev Gum, Erica Majba, Akhter Rahman, Gerry Sanderson, Carol Summers, Jenni Thomson and Beverley attended the White Ribbon Breakfast featuring keynote speaker

Dr Michael Kaufman PhD and Co-Founder of the Global White Ribbon Campaign. Dr Kaufman is an internationally-acclaimed Canadian author, activist, consultant and public speaker. He is currently senior fellow at Instituto Promundo in Washington DC, a global consortium that works to promote gender equality and create a world free from violence by engaging men and boys in part-nership with women and girls. “Men have been defined as part of the problem. But the White Ribbon Campaign believes that men can also be part of the solution. Confronting men’s violence requires nothing less than a commitment to full equality for women and a redefinition of what it means to be men, to discover a meaning to manhood that doesn’t require blood to be spilled”. Michael Kaufman About 1700 people attended including the Governor, the Honourable Hieu Van Le, Hon Zoe Bettison MP and Rachael Sanderson MP. Many thanks to Cintra Amos of the Zonta Club of Adelaide Flinders for all the preliminary work undertaken to make this event an outstanding success.

Where did White Ribbon come from? 1991: On the second anniversary of the massacre of 14 women by a lone gunman in Montreal, Canada, a handful of Canadian men initiate a Campaign to urge men to speak out about violence against women. The symbol of the Campaign was a white ribbon.

1999: The United Nations General Assembly

declares 25 November the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

This day, 25 November, is the anniversary of the assassination of the Mirabal sisters – three Dominican political dissidents who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. White Ribbon Day is now observed on this date each year, with the white ribbon as its iconic symbol.

2003: UNIFEM, now UN Women, established the White Ribbon Campaign in Australia.

2007: The White Ribbon Foundation is formed in Australia as a stand-alone entity.
