Biography My name is Christian Scungio and I am 22 years old. I have always had an interest in design and my junior year of high school I was introduced to an architect, he brought me to his firm and “showed me the ropes” so to speak. I immediately knew that is what I wanted to do in college. Soon after I joined an afterschool program called A.C.E. This program mentors high school students and helps them pursue careers in design or construction. Each year in the program the 3rd year students submit their projects to a national competition. Our project ended up receiving 3rd place on a national level. I then enrolled at Community College of Rhode Island were I obtained my Associates degree. This served as a base for my education and further prepared me for the rigorous architecture program at Roger Williams University. My next goal is to graduate from Roger Williams University with a Master’s Degree. This semester is my last in the undergraduate program and I have been accepted to the Master’s program. The time that I’ve spent at this school has been challenging but enjoyable. There is always problems to solve which keep me busy and constantly engaged in the program. I am very happy with the path that I have taken, I and am very pleased to have chosen architecture as my career choice.

PROJECT 1: FALL RIVER LIBRARYThe proposition for this project was to design a library fit for the 21st century. Working on a site in Fall River, Massachusetts, the proposal was to build a library that would enhance the surround-ing area and its community. This library was a way to give the community around it a space of reflection and discovery. A place where one can discover new ideas as well as share their own with others. The proposed design provides both open areas to encourage group work and more intimate spaces set aside to provide areas of focus.

CONCEPT STATEMENT:The proposed design would serve as an exten-sion of South Park located across the street from the library. The large glass portions of the façade act as a window framing the landscape of the park as well as showing the pedestrian traffic occurring throughout the building. This design provides a connection to the outdoors, open-ness, and a direct view to the park.

PROJECT 2: BOSTON ROWHOUSESThis project consisted of designing rowhouses in the South Boston area. These collective housing units are providing housing for two different kind of users: owners, and renters. The project was to create a space socially, well designed multi-unit housing that allows more opportunities for community life and cooperation. The notion of having overlapping housing is a naturally more diverse and dynamic environment for people to interact in.

CONCEPT STATEMENT:The intent of the design was to introduce the use of extrusions and intrusions to the project to capture key moments in the surrounding area of Boston as well as work parallel to the cen-tral courtyard of the building. This condition allowed for users to experience different connections between the spaces within the building.

PROJECT 3: BOSTON LOFTS

RenewalChristian Scungio- Fall 2014

The main premise of this project was to design a loft in a typ-ical building in Boston’s Seaport District. Lofts are growing in popularity over the years and are now on the cutting edge of dwelling design. Each dwelling had a free plan 20’X50’ floor plate. The lofts were located on the fourth floor of the building and positioned facing the West. The concept of the project was to utilize service cores to maximize efficiency throughout the loft while providing unique living spaces.

Page 11: Christian G. Scungio Portfolio

CONCEPT STATEMENT:This particular design was inspired through some research of repurposed factory buildings or mills into loft apartments. The idea of renewing of an old building intrigued me and led me to research deep-er into the subject. I took some of these precedents and infused them into my own design, using brick and heavy timber structural elements.

PROJECT 4: MID-RISE APARTMENTS

This basis of this project was to design a midrise apart-ment complex in the booming South Boston area. The design was to include 3 types of different unit: studios, one bedroom apartments and two bedroom apart-ments. These could combine different housing typolo-gies to create a residential complex. The building also needed to have handicap accessible housing, gather-ing spaces, a fitness center, and a public café.

CONCEPT STATEMENT:This façade design uses a shutter system on the windows that the apartment owners can move individually, giving the building a forever changing facade.

CON/MAT: TECHNICAL DRAWINGSThis project consisted in creating construction details for a masonry construction building with a façade of our choice. For the project I chose to use terra- cotta cladding for the façade. Below are some of the technical drawings that I created using Autodesk AutoCAD.
