The Two Hands There has always been an intellectual tension between two views of reality. On the one hand there are those who believe in determinism. That is to say they believe that everything has a mechanical cause that leads to a predictable effect. On the other hand there are those who believe in creativity. They believe that there are some things that appear to be uncaused and, therefore, miraculous. Those two notions have been at odds now for centuries. The notion of free will vs. determinism is at the very center of theology and some version of this tension is even at the very center of physics. Is there a predictable regularity to life or are events creatively chaotic? What do you think? Do you think everything is meant to be, or do you think your life and your future are the result of choices you make and choices other people are allowed to make? The Bible supports both views. On the one hand we are assured that God is in ultimate control of everything. Jesus tells us that not even a little bird can fall from the sky unless allowed by God, that the very hairs of our head are numbered, and that we can trust God to take care of us come what may. On the other hand, the fundamental notions regarding sin and judgment depend upon free will. After all, how can God hold me responsible for my choices if I don't have any real choices that I can make? The lives we live offer us an inelegant solution to the problem of free will. On the one hand it seems absolutely certain that history is under the control of God. But, on the other hand, it's also absolutely certain that some of the things which have happened in history are contrary to God's will. One only need read the Bible to discover that. Over and over again God told the ancient Hebrew people to repent of their sins or he would allow great calamity to visit them. But on many occasions they refused to repent and suffered terrible consequences for their choices.

What was true for the ancient Hebrew people is also true for us today as individuals. In fact, according to the Bible the things that happened to the ancient Hebrew people were allowed to happen as instruction for us. God is ultimately in control of destiny, however, I reap what I sow in my life. If I choose to sow to my flesh, that is, if I live a life of self-indulgent passion and I ignore the spiritual and intellectual aspects of my life I will reap destruction, according to Scripture. On the other hand, I am assured that if I commit myself to living according to spiritual principles, then God will visit me with the Holy Spirit and my life will predictably flourish. The choice is mine and the choice is yours but, ultimately, our entire future is still in the hands of God. So it is fair to say that things are not out of control. When you and I look around it would be easy for us to come to the conclusion that all of life today is hopelessly chaotic. But that's just not true, God is still God and God's Will ultimately will out. My responsibility is to listen, trust and obey. You can trust that God is in control and ultimately has a plan for your life and an important future for you to live. Trust God and be confident in God's loving care and protection for you and learn from the consequences of your choices.
Spencer Matthew 10:29-31 “Not one sparrow (What do they cost? Two for a penny?) can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t worry! You are more valuable to him than many sparrows.” 1 Peter 5:6 “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,” John 10:29 “My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.”

Supplies
It is really amazing how many different supplies students are asked to provide at back-to-school time. Even though most students today are studying and attending virtual on-line classes, they still need their supplies, and they need a lot of them. Each student is expected to provide: a 3-ring binder, several notebooks, several file folders, notebook paper, crayons or colored pencils, markers, a dozen writing pencils, erasers, pens, highlighters, paint, scissors, glue, a ruler, a calculator, hand sanitizer, Kleenex, a water bottle and a backpack to carry it all. It’s a pretty long list! Luckily, we eventually outgrow those school supply lists. But what other types of lists do we create for ourselves in place of those school supplies? What is it that we think we NEED to have to feel complete? For kids it might be having the coolest style of clothes or the newest running shoes. For us adults, maybe it’s a new car, the newest version of a phone, golf clubs or a house in the ‘right’ zip code. Truth is, most of us do have a list of things that we want, and think would make us feel happy and fulfilled. But we learn from the Bible that all the ‘stuff’ in the world can’t compare to the joy and fulfillment that comes from having a relationship with our Heavenly Father. He even supplied for us a way to receive forgiveness of everything we ever do wrong, and a way to receive eternal life. He supplied us with Jesus, and He is all we ever really need. And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. ~ Philippians 4:19 The youth group is providing some of the school supplies needed for the students of our congregation. Supply kits are available for pick-up at church on Sundays or contact Heidi New to have one delivered. In His Service, Heidi

Your Church Board is in the process of discussing the best way to provide ballots to as many people as possible.
