I love the month of November when the whole family wrap up warm and head off to Stanpit Recreation Ground for the annual bonfire and firework display. There’s always so much to do and great to see so many familiar faces (and an affordable event for the whole family). My favourite part of the evening has to be the Gugge 2000 Band! Jigging away to the Gugge band whilst embarrassing my boys is always a must!

A couple of exciting announcements this month; Jenni Baden Howard,Editor of www.nonstopmama.compreviously Beauty editor for The Daily Telegraph for many years, now writes for a range of UK Glossies which now includes a monthly column here in the Christchurch Eye! Also, BroganMooney who wrote our Teen Column for us last month has come on board too as a regular columnist which is now titled ‘Brogan’s Column’.Congratulations to Mrs M Robb of Highcliffe for winning our Sudoku Competition to see Christchurch’s Gilbert & Sullivan Societys’ PrincessIda at the Regent Centre, we hope you enjoyed the show! Also,

congratulations to Mary Whitcher for winning a Bouquet of Flowers courtesy of Fairmile Florist!

As always, this magazine is brought to you free of charge to assist you when choosing local companies to provide you with local services and products. We hope to provide you with plentyof information and entice you to keep the magazine for the whole month, this way our advertisements get seen more. Let’s support our community and the businesses within it – we’d belost without them!

Finally, please don’t forget to mention Christchurch Eye when responding to adverts as without our advertisers there wouldn’t be a magazine!

Happy reading,

CEditor

Father Christmas has been so

delighted at the reception given to

him by Christchurch people in past

years that he will be bringing more

of his reindeer – six in total - to the

town’s Christmas Festival. This year’s Festival takes place on Saturday 27

November and a host of entertainment is being

planned to get everyone in the festive spirit.

The traditional Christmas market will be in the

pedestrianised High Street from 10am to 7pm

selling a wide range of food, drink and Christmas

gifts.

Father Christmas will be led by his reindeer into

the High Street to join the Mayor, Cllr Nick Geary,

on the balcony of the Mayor’s Parlour for the

switch-on of the Christmas lights at 4.30pm.

Heart FM breakfast show presenters Jules and

Bunker will also be on the balcony to talk to the

crowd.

Following the ceremony, the reindeer will

transport Santa down to the Priory where he will

speak to children and receive their Christmas

wish letters. Children will also get a chance to

pet the reindeer there.

Throughout the day, from 10am to 4pm,

Christchurch Community Partnership will be

presenting Magical Moments in the marquee in

Saxon Square. This will include performances

from Christchurch Music Centre, State of

Undress, Stourvale Mummers, children’s

entertainer Mervin Cole, Swing Unlimited, Pure

Funk, Treehouse Theatre, Lighthouse bands and

groups from Christchurch Junior School and

Mudeford Infants.

The Priory church will be holding its Christmas

Fair on the same day. There will also be activities

and entertainment in Bargates as well as offers

in shops in the High Street and Bargates.

Christchurch Library will be holding story-telling

sessions and craft activities in the morning and

afternoon.

Editor’s Choice:

This month I’d like to say a Big Thanksto all the staff at the Post Officein Christchurch High Street. As afrequent visitor to their counters, I’malways presented with a ‘Hello’, a smileand polite conversation. I’ve alwaysfound that they are very helpful andinformative of the many services thatthey provide.

Cheryl Dennett

The Mcpet shop in Walkford is themost helpful; welcoming pet shop inthe area if they haven’t got somethingyou need they will get it and deliverfor you.

Kev & Rob

My favourite place in Christchurchis by the river where I go fishing andwatch the wildlife. It is quiet thereand away from the noise of the town.A place where you can just relaxwithout being disturbed.

Since the re-opening of the CopperSkillet last year my fiancé and I havebecome frequent visitors as welove their wonderful breakfasts. Myfiancé has the full skillet and alwayscomments on what a filling and goodquality breakfast it is. I usually havethe smaller version the ‘Half Skillet’which is just as great. The ownersand staff are always welcoming andfriendly and cannot do enough foryou. Having tried many ‘a breakfastout’, it is by far the best.

AN INDEPENDENTVIEWBy Julie RatcliffeNew in town this monthis Pinks Embroidery anda new fruit and vegetableshop in Bargates, andshortly we shall see Lois’sBabies & Kids Storeopening on BarrackRoad, but what can bedone to encourage more independent shops?

Recently the Federation of Small Businesses’held its Small Business Friendly Awards forcouncils. The winner for Best All Round SmallBusiness Friendliness was Christchurch Council. The nomination contained a raft of the Council’sinitiatives, including one where officers hadcontacted every business in the Borough entitled toSmall Business Rate Relief (SBRR). Such relief willbe of great help to struggling firms.

Offering a helping hand with business rates leavesonly the issue of continuous rent rises - anotherburden on a small business, particularly for highstreet premises. It is often the combination of ratesand rent rises that tips a business over the edge.

There are still many independent shops in the towncentre, Bargates, and further afield and, at present, only a few empty units. These often end up beingtaken by national chains or charity shops, whichare able to afford the payments. But this has ledto a change in many high streets and complaintsthat it’s difficult to tell one from another. So it wasinteresting to read proposals in London to usethe planning system to support the provision ofaffordable retail units when applications for retaildevelopments are made. This already happenswith housing development. So is this somethingthat could be achieved here?

The character of small towns such as Christchurchis often in the variety of its independent shops.Maybe potential new sites, such as the former PostOffice site on Wick Lane, are ripe for such an idea.Perhaps the Council could pioneer this in Dorsetand win again?

If you’re using home hair colours, the crucialthing is to check product packaging forsuitability (especially if your tresses are alreadycoloured or chemically treated), do the sensitivityand strand tests and always seek professionaladvice from a local salon if you’re in any doubt.More complex processes, like highlighting andlowlighting, are often best left to the pros.

A fast, easy way to give your beauty routine aninstant, seasonal update is at your fingertips(and toes, too!). ‘Very warm, autumnal nailcolours are definitely “in” now,’ confirms AlisonFilbee, senior therapist at the Matisse BeautyClinic, Christchurch (for appointments, tel:01202 487070). ‘The most popular shadesfor manicures now are mushrooms, darkerbrowns and even deep greens’. Matisse stocksthe Jessica range of Custom Nail Colours, aprofessional range that’s a hit with beauty pros.‘Among our favourites in the salon are the newVictorian Crush, a soft green, and Bittersweet,a dark toffee shade, which are both part of theMuse autumn/winter collection’. The salon alsooffers a Jessica Three Week Manicure, whichinvolves “setting” colour under UV light forglossy, long-lasting effect. ‘It’s ideal if you’rebusy and the benefits include smudge and chip-free colour,’ adds Alison.

On the town’s beauty counters, too, look out forthis season’s delicious new shades of chocolateand rich, deep berries. At Boots, try No 7’sStay Perfect Nail Polish in Spun Sugar andDamson Dream, Bourjois’ 1 Seconde Nail Polishin Gris Cashmere or Maybelline New York’sForever Strong Professional Varnish in ExtremeBlackcurrant or Really Rose.

Our new columnistJenni Baden Howardedits nonstopmama.com, an online magazinewith beauty, fashion, homes, food, exclusiveinterviews and greatgiveaways. Jenni haswritten for many nationalnewspapers andglossies, including TheDaily Telegraph, Elle and Marie ClaireMarie Claire.

I’m really excited about writing for ChristchurchEye and getting the opportunity to chat to allthe fantastic local businesses and experts– from hair stylists to homes and interiorsshops, restaurants to gift boutiques – with theaim bringing you lots of ideas and inspiration, targeted to the season.

Where to begin?! This month, we’re kicking offwith a beauty theme. Now that temperatures aredropping – despite the last minute rays of southcoast sunshine we’ve been loving recently – it’s agreat time to think about adding a bit of warmthand gloss to post-summer hair and updatingyour make-up for the colder months (any excuseto splash out on a new lip gloss or nail polish,no?).

‘After summer’s lighter, sunkissed looks, manyclients want to tone their hair colour down alittle for autumn,’ says Hannah Mattingly, artdirector at Toni & Guy salon, Christchurch (forappointments, tel: 01202 409560). ‘Many of usare drawn to warmer, more autumnal shades tomatch the season’.

Colour-enhancing shampoos and conditioners– such as those by John Frieda and CharlesWorthington, available in town at Boots andWaitrose, for example – along with temporaryand semi-permanent colours (used at home orapplied professionally in a salon) can be used toadd depth and shine to post-summer tresses.Hannah at Toni & Guy also suggests the salon’sprofessional Natural Glossing treatment. ‘Thisis inbetween a semi-permanent and permanentcolour,’ she explains. ‘It will fade out withoutregrowth, but it’s important to come in for acomplimentary consultation first to check thatit’s compatible with your hair’.

Winter is one of myfavourite seasons;boiling hot bubblebaths, cups of tea,big jumpers and fluffysocks, Saturday nightsin with a take-awaywatching Strictly ComeDancing or The XFactor. Staying in mypyjama’s being fixedto the TV all day never seems bad or curling up onto the TV all day never seems bad or curling up onthe sofa with an old Disney movie. Oh and of course, there’s always that glimpse of hope that we mightwitness some snow again!

However, despite all of that, everyday I find myselfcomplaining to my friend Kelly on our walk to the trainstation about how cold it is. We both wish we hadworn two pairs of socks or invested in a proper pairof gloves. Although, by the time we start walking andclimb onto the busy train, we tend to forget about it.

Another thing I always seem to complain about in theAnother thing I always seem to complain about in theWinter is walking everywhere. Not only is it freezingcold in the mornings, but I’m always so tired fromworking and school work, I really can’t be bothered!Maybe it’s just because I’m lazy, but sometimes Ipersuade my mum to take me to the train station orpick me up from work, even though I don’t live thatfar away.

Last Saturday however, I decided to cycle to work andas I was passing Christchurch Junior School, I sawan elderly woman stumble over the pavement and fallto the floor. She dropped her newspaper and purseand sat on the ground in shock. I jumped off my bike, helped her up again and asked if she needed me tocall anyone for her. She seemed fine, thanked me, andwalked on home. At that point, I realised, if someonenearly 50 years older than me can walk aroundChristchurch to her house at a slow pace, then I reallyshouldn’t complain about walking places too.

So although I can’t drive yet, I’ll just put on a biggercoat and appreciate when my mum does give melifts. She reminds me that I’m young and should bewalking, even if it is winter!

It is hard to believe that the site of a municipalcar park was once a thriving community, an areawith shops, small businesses and houses withfamilies; it was swept aside to make way for thefamilies; it was swept aside to make way for the motorcar. The area is now the car park next to the Conservative Club, immediately adjacent to the roundabout at the end of the bypass. The roundabout is called the Pit site roundabout and the car park is the Pit site car park. The area was once a gravel pit from which the local inhabitants would have extracted gravel for building and road mending. When the gravel was no longer required or ran out the area was gradually developed. People built small cottages, yards and store houses on ground they had come to believe was theirs. These buildings were made of cob and thatch, (roofing slate not being a local material, was expensive) all the dwelling houses no doubt contained large families with very little furniture. By the early 19th

century the community was an integral part of Bargates.

On the 20th July 1825 a catastrophic fire saw the total destruction of many houses and fifty two families were made homeless. The town of Christchurch responded to the tragedy with remarkable speed and compassion, homes were found for the homeless and a collection fund was started, over a thousand pounds was raised. As a result of the destruction the area was rebuilt with a different layout and different materials. Brick and slate were used rather than the cob and thatch. The design of cottages built was not dissimilar to the ones that have just been finished in Wick Lane. One thoroughfare was named after John Spicer, the Chairman of the committee that was set up to distribute the money raised.

The generosity of the town at this time was commemorated in a Plaque which was placed on a cottage in Spicer Street (the cottage, incidentally, that my Great Great Grandparents lived in). The small map dating from the 1840s shows the layout of the area very well. It had a pump, blacksmith, small courtyard and a “lock up,” which replaced the “blind house” (a round building with no windows which was used to imprison miscreants).

Over time the main route out of the Town changed, from the road through Bargates and

Faimile to Barrack Road which had once been just a lane leading past fields to the Barracks. This route began to attract more and more traffic with the growth in popularity of Bournemouth as a holiday destination in the late 19th Century and the increase of motor car traffic. This resulted in the widening of Barrack Road (on a number of occasions over the years). Then when the newly widened Iford Bridge was opened in the early 1930’s a bottleneck at the pit site was created. By the 1930’s the Pit site had become run down and neglected, it became rather notorious as a den of iniquity. The houses in western end of the Pit site were condemned and demolished, this was timely as it allowed the growing number of motor cars an easier access to the Town. The Eastern end of the pit site remained with buildings which included the Antelope Inn and Millers Brother builders and decorator’s house and yard. With traffic filled roads all around and plans for a new by pass coming right into the Town, these buildings were doomed and so after compulsory purchase by the authorities they were demolished and replaced by the Pit site roundabout leaving no memorial except the name.

More information on the Great Fire and on the Pit site can be obtained from the Christchurch Local History Society.
