11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: 2 Samuel 12:7-10

Today’s passage concludes the

well-known story of David’s sin

of adultery with Bathsheba and

also the sin of arranging the

death of her husband, Uriah.

Nathan the prophet confronts

David with these sins.

Second Reading: Galatians 2:1,

19-21 Continuing our reading from

Paul’s letter to the Galatians, we

will hear the central theme of this

letter. Paul clearly states that it is

not the Jewish law with its 613

precepts that produces salvation.

Rather, it is Jesus Christ in whom

we place our faith.

Dear Friends,

Ever since I wrote to you about my sabbatical, multiple ques-

tions have been raised. Some questions were addressed to me; oth-

ers were not spoken directly to me. While I have heard expres-

sions like “I am so happy for you!” other people have become

more anxious about my health, my well-being and asked whether

or not I am happy. I don’t know how to answer people’s ques-

tions and concerns about my sabbatical. Yes! I am happy and ful-

filled with ministry as a priest and at Christ the King in particular. I would like

to give you a little context before I go on.

The word sabbatical is rooted in the Biblical idea of Sabbath, which in-

volves ceasing, rest, worship, play and reflection. Sabbatical in its original

form was the ancient practice in Israel of letting the land lie fallow for an en-

tire year after seven years of activity (Exodus 23:10-11). This strategy allowed

the earth to replenish itself so that it could continue to bear fruit. Throughout

church history ministry leaders have retreated for periods of time to connect

with the Lord- in deeper and restorative ways.

For ministry leaders our time away is a period where we too can “lie fal-

low” with the express purpose of returning back to our responsibilities as pas-

tors replenished and readied for a new season of fruitfulness. My own personal

understanding of sabbatical is that it is an act of self-care that would prevent

stress or burnout, and instead promote health so that I may return to another

season of fruitfulness.

Author and pastor, Mark Buchanan writing about his own need for a sabbat-

ical, captures in words my present feelings when he writes in his book, The

Rest of God, Restoring Your Soul by Restoring Sabbath, “Somewhere I got

dull. The child got old, the warrior timid.”

So I hope you can understand my need for time away and realize that I will

return and will be happy to do so! Upon returning to CTK I hope to be able to

serve you with renewed energy, enthusiasm and vision and all that it takes to

serve you well. I have never had time for a sabbatical. I have taken various

workshops, attended conferences, all for the purpose of being able to better

serve you as your Pastor.

I am truly grateful to the diocese and the parish for allowing me to have

some time away. The diocese will cover fifty percent of my expenses and the

parish will cover twenty five percent. I will have to take care of the rest myself

plus travel. I will be away in August and September 2016 and then in January-

February- March 2017. In the summer of 2017, I will be doing the 30-days

Ignatian retreat.

Summer Hospitality

Starting June 18th until August 28th, various ministries at CTK will be step-

ping forward to offer summer hospitality after 5:00 pm and 12:15 pm Masses,

which will include wine and soft drinks and finger foods. The Pastoral council

will be offering hospitality on Father’s day weekend. I am grateful to all the

ministries (Pastoral Council, ICF, Christ Light, Lifeworks, Filipino Society,

Dress a child, Hospitality Committee, Eucharistic Ministers, CTK School and

others) who have stepped forward. During these social moments, we as a par-

ish will get an opportunity to learn more about our wonderful ministries. I am

grateful to Kate Doherty for organizing these socials. She is already stepping

into her new role as temporary administrator of CTK with great dedication and

love.

Saturday June 18 10:30 am

One of the rich spiritual practices of

the Christian faith is a silent form of

prayer called Centering Prayer.

Although an ancient tradition, its

practice has been revitalized by Trap-

pist monk Thomas Keating and oth-

ers in recent decades. In the Bay

Are, there are several Centering

Prayer groups which meet weekly for

prayer and scripture reflection. Two

of these groups are local:

Wednesday 7:30 pm: Church of

the Resurrection (399 Gregory Ln)

Thursday 10:00 am: Christ the

King Ministry Ctr Library.

You are invited to visit one of these

groups to “Come and See”. For more

information, email Pat Stevens at

[email protected].
