Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Wisdom 6:12-16

The book of Wisdom was written by a teacher who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, a center for Greek philosophy in the ancient world. Fearful that the Jewish people might be captivated by this secular thought, the author con-trasts it with the true wisdom of God. In today’s passage, wisdom is person-ified as a woman.

Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Paul’s first letter to the Thessaloni-ans contains the earliest written refer-ence we have to Jesus’s death and resurrection. Paul and the early Christians expected Jesus to return in glory immediately. Some Thessaloni-ans felt sad because members of their community had died, and they won-dered how the dead would participate in the Second Coming. Paul address-es this issue in today’s passage. (The description of Jesus’s Second Coming is clearly symbolic and is not meant to be taken literally.)

I have Fr. Paulson’s permission to occupy this space but I am solely responsible for its content. Two weeks ago I made an appeal to you to make a financial pledge in support of urgent repairs to our parish property. Fr. Paulson got an e-mail from a parishioner very upset that the appeal was made during Homily time. The decision to do so was made by me, not by Fr. Paulson. Just in case there are others similarly upset I would like to explain the rationale behind my decision. I can fully understand that some people, after hearing the ap-peal might decide that, at the present time, they are regrettably unable to support it financially. But I wanted everybody to at least hear the appeal. If I had waited until after the Communion time, there would have been between 10-40 people at any given Mass, perhaps 200 in all, who wouldn’t have heard the appeal. Why? Because, after receiving Holy Communion, they continue walking right out the door. They too are a valued part of our Parish family and should have the oppor-tunity of contributing to the repair of their Parish property. The writer of the e-mail went on to say that she was so upset that she decided not to contribute. That of course is her prerogative. Such action, however, is not hurt-ing Fr. Paulson, nor is it hurting me. The only entity being hurt is the wider Parish family, which relies on everyone contributing to the best of their abilities. I regret that anyone was upset by my decision, but I do not regret the decision it-self. May God bless us all. Brian Timoney.

TheMonumentCrisisCenter’s(MCC)mis-sion is to provide food, education, tools & assistance, concrete referrals, workshops and resources for families, seniors and indi-viduals in crisis situations, and to promote community awareness of hun-ger and poverty challenges in Contra Costa County, thereby providing a strong path to independence, health, safety, sustainability and stability. We operate a comprehensive familyresourcecenter for extreme low in-come residents living in every city in Central and East Contra Costa Coun-ty. Our nonpro it is profoundly dedicated to addressing the needs of low income, at-risk families, seniors and individuals by providing safety net services at one central location. Food & nutrition, adult education, re-source & referrals, health access & wellness are delivered through critical, targeted programming. All this is possible because of the dedicated and generous support of volunteers and donors from business, faith, academ-ic, community and civic groups. Since 1986, SHELTER, Inc. has provided housing in addition to services such as counsel-ing, budgeting, tutoring and employment ser-vices to help rebuild lives. Through strong community partnerships, SHELTER, Inc.

served over 2,300 people and 1,000 of those served were children. SHEL-TER, Inc.’s main program areas include: (continued on flap)

A message from Fr. Paulson, Dear Friends, It has been one of my joyous responsibilities to attend and support the Faith in Action core team meetings. Kate Doherty used to be our parish representative in those meetings and she did a marvelous job. Christ the King Parish has been supporting three important ministries over the last many years, and they look to us for continued financing and volunteering . The second collection next week will support them and I would love us to be generous in our assistance. Read the following about the three groups:

Pray for Our Sick Dear God, we place our worries in your

hands. We place our sick under your care

and humbly ask that you restore your servants to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge your will and know that whatever you do, you do for the love of us.

Amen. Shawn Roy Schiller,

Lloyd Poynter, Rosalinda Advincula

The What If? Foundation has been providing nutritious meals to impoverished children in the Ti Plas Kazo neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, Haiti since 2000. What started as a modest program serving 500 children once a week, has expanded to respond to the changing needs in the community. The backbone of the food program is the daily meal distribution that serves about 3000 meals each week to hungry boys and girls from the community. There is also a lunch program at the Father Jeri School, which opened its doors in September 2016. More than 1,200 meals are served each week in the school cafeteria which is helping to ensure that students have the nutri-tion they need to be able to study, learn and succeed. For the majority of these children, this is their only nu-tritious meal of the day.The extreme weather in recent years has resulted in food becoming more scarce and even more expensive. Families are finding it very diffi-cult to provide food at home. This program remains critically important to the health of hundreds of chil-dren. The What If? Foundation is deeply grateful to Christ the King for its generous support, both past and pre-sent. Haiti’s needs are as great as ever and it is a privi-lege to respond to those needs in partnership with your parish community.
