CHRIST THE KING

KINGSHIP

The book of Samuel recounts for us today the anointing of David as king of Israel. It was the elders of Israel who declared David king that day, but it was God who called David to shepherd Israel. Thus mandated by the citizens of his kingdom and by his God, David took his place in a long line of kings.

The apostle Paul speaks to us of kingship as well, but on a much higher plane: the kingship of Jesus our Lord. As great as David was, he and all earthly monarchs who came before and after him in their kingdoms around the world are minor kings by com-parison to the true King. And lastly, we hear the story of that true King in perhaps his weakest mo-ment: near death, hanging on a cross, taunted by a common criminal and by the world at large. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Thanksgiving Prayer

Father in Heaven, Creator of all and source of all goodness and love, please look kindly upon us and receive our heart-felt gratitude in this time of giving thanks. Thank you for all the graces and blessings. You have bestowed upon us, spiritual and temporal: our faith and religious heritage. Our food and shelter, our health, the love we have for one another, our family and friends. Dear Father, in Your infinite generosity, please grant us continued graces and blessing throughout the coming year. This we ask in the Name of Jesus, Your Son and our Brother. Amen.

Sunday is Christ the King Sunday, the last Sunday in Ordinary Time before Advent and the beginning of a new liturgical year. I thought that this celebration must date from the Middle Ages, but discovered recently Pope Pius XI added it in 1925. He intended it as a day to celebrate and remember Christ’s kingship over all creation, as well as remind us that all humankind must submit to Christ’s rule. As you can imagine, it has, especially in recent years been a somewhat controversial day among those Christians who consider the language of kingship outdated or oppressive. For many, the images of kings and kingdoms conjure up thoughts of tyrants. But the kingship of Jesus takes on a very different form than

does the kingship of earthly rulers. Jesus’ comes to us not as a great conquering military leader who oppresses and abuses the conquered. Rather, he comes as the Prince of Peace, the One whose reign proclaims peace, justice, liberation, and above all, service. Jesus turned the whole concept of lordship and kingship on its head You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to become great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:42-45). Jesus knew the popular images of kings and lords and redefined them. In God’s resurrection world, in order to be a ruler of all, Jesus must become a servant of all. Jesus demonstrated this servanthood in his life and miracles. Even the Incarnation is an example of this: God the Son, King of all creation, humbled himself to become human, even sharing the ultimate fate of his captive subjects: death. Interestingly, most references to Jesus as king occur during the Passion story. The symbol of Christ’s kingship is not a crown but a cross. The Son of God became human and died a horrible death on the cross to release his subjects from captivity. The One who is the true king of our world made this ultimate sacrifice out of his deep and abiding love for the world, a world constantly in rebellion against him. Christ’s kingship is not like a king with a jewel-encrusted crown in purple finery on a gold throne wielding an oppressive rod of iron. Rather, he is the crucified God with a crown of thorns hanging half naked on a cross of shame to set us free from our bondage.

His Holiness Pope Francis has named Cardinal-designate JOSEPH W. TOBIN, C.Ss.R. as the sixth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Newark.

Cardinal Tobin will become the first cardinal in the history of the archdiocese.

In his remarks, Cardinal-designate Tobin said that with being named a cardinal and now the head of the Newark Arch-diocese, "I'm not sure my central nervous system could take much more news." He reiterated his love for the people of central and southern Indiana, adding it will be hard to leave them. But as he said in his statement released in Indianapolis, "God has called me to live my baptism as a missionary disciple ... sent forth to preach."

He said when he was named to Indianapolis four years ago, he had "to fend off the dreaded 'v' question -- 'What is your vision for the archdiocese?'" "I don't have a vision right now for Newark. With the help of the Holy Spirit we will have one," he said, adding that he did not intended to offer a plan at the news conference "but to share convictions, principles that will guide my ministry forward ... to respond in love of God, who loved us first." One of those principles, he said, will be "to encourage the journey of all" in the Newark Arch-diocese "to ever greater love, knowledge and faith in Christ."

A native of Detroit, the cardinal-designate is the oldest of 13 children.

The priests, consecrated religious and laity of the archdiocese will celebrate Archbishop Tobin’s installation on Friday, January 6, 2017

in the historic Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
