CHRIST CHRONICLE

Christ Lutheran Church and School

7701 Candelaria Road NE

From the Pastor

Dear Friends in Christ,

In 2010, we worked together to lay

out a “roadmap” for the next ten

years of Mission and Ministry at

Christ Lutheran Church and School.

It has taken a little while for our

“2020 Vision” to gain as much trac-

tion as we originally anticipated, but

we continue to move forward in

wonderful ways. Let me share just a

few things from that vision:

THY WILL

BE DONE:

We are all

a b o u t

s e e k i n g

God’s will in our lives, in our church

and school, and in our outreach. To

understand His Will, we understand

that all we have and all we are

comes from God who gives us all

good things. We resolved to grow in

our understanding of His ownership

of our lives and our church, and in

our understanding and growth in

the stewardship of all the resources

He has entrusted to us. We also re-

solved to be intentional in our ac-

tions in obedience to His Will.

WE WILL CELEBRATE & BUILD on all

of the positives God is doing in our

midst. We committed to journey as

individual members of the Body of

Christ working Together as His Chil-

dren by the Power of the Holy Spirit

in this place. Today, over six years

later, we continue to celebrate all

that He has done, is doing, and will

do in our midst.

We have completed capital projects,

developed mission outreaches, and

are working hard to grow our school.

We are embarking on the imple-

mentation of Stephen Ministries,

seeing more visitors in worship, ex-

panding our Preschool, and are al-

ways looking for new ways to reach

out with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

CHALLENGES & OPPORTUNITIES

continue. Some are the same and

some are new. We continue to

make progress in the East Albuquer-

que Mission, but are always in need

or resources (people and finances)

as that mission continues to expand

both in time and influence.

The economic downturn of our na-

tion and other factors severely

slowed the growth of our school, but

we are now on track to increase our

enrollment by twenty percent this

year, and hope to see at least a ten

percent growth every year as we

move forward.

While we are bringing in new mem-

bers, we are still working to in-

crease our overall Sunday worship

attendance. We worship well over

fifty percent of our membership eve-

ry Sunday (more than twice the na-

tional average) I believe we can

raise the bar even higher! Forming

new worship habits and patterns in

our lives is a challenge, but I know

we can encourage one another to

be more faithful in this area of our

lives.

Opportunities for involvement in

mission and ministry continue to

abound. We are a very active con-

gregation with many members in-

volved and working together for the

sake of the Kingdom. If you are not

active in service somewhere, I en-

courage you to join your brothers

and sisters for fun and fellowship

as we work together and side by

side.

LESS THAN FOUR YEARS LEFT!

There is still much to do and to ac-

complish! We still have capital pro-

jects on the drawing board. Our

school continually needs to be pro-

moted even more effectively by

word of mouth. We still need to

continue to invite others to wor-

ship. We still desire to grow togeth-

er in studying God’s Word and

sharing it with others. We work

hard to meet the needs of others in

outreach and in our fellowship with

one another. We strive to grow in

the love of Christ in Word and

Deed. We will indeed continue to

share ideas, dream dreams, and

seek the Lord’s Will as His Vision

for us continues to unfold!

These are exciting times at Christ

Lutheran Church & School, and the

Lord is leading us in some exciting

directions. Remember, it’s all

about “Sharing God’s Love with All

His Children, While Growing Togeth-

er in Christ!”

CHRIST CHRONICLE

From the Principal

Mark von Soosten

May was a busy month at Christ

Lutheran School!

• We hosted our seventeenth annual

Albuquerque Lutheran Schools Field Day.

• The music department hosted a concert

with:

• fourth graders playing recorders,

• the band playing selections from

composer John Williams,

• the choir presenting the musical,

“What’s Up, Zak?”

• We held our annual sports banquet.

• We celebrated graduation ceremonies for

Pre-Kindergarteners, Kindergarteners, and

eighth graders.

Our students also accomplished many things

worth celebrating. They performed very well in

competitions such as:

• National Geographic Bee (state finalist),

• Regional Science and Engineering Challenge

(a 2nd place in math and a 3rd place in engi-

neering from this area of the state, including

all of Albuquerque),

• Lutheran School Spelling Bee (two 1st places)

• Track and Field Championships for the Albu-

querque Christian Athletic Association and

Albuquerque Charter School League (Junior

Varsity girls placed 1st and Varsity girls

placed 2nd from ten teams combined.)

None of this would be possible without the pray-

ers and support of the members of Christ Lu-

theran Church. I know that all of the teachers

and staff appreciate the support you have

shown the school through all the years. You

make this ministry possible!

POWER OF PRAYER…and THE

HOLY SPIRIT

Today I reflect as we close out our Christ Lutheran

School year with Pre-School, Kindergarten, and our

8th Grade graduations in celebration as each of

these children and youth take their next steps in

life. I am content.

I also can’t help but reflect back to nine months

ago when I was, to put it mildly, anxious. Our K-8

school was hovering around 100 students after

declining for a number of years in enrollment. Our

pre-school, which had for many years helped sup-

port our K-8, had declined as well.

The direction we were going was not sustainable

on a long term basis. I was worried. We engaged

Graceworks, a Christian education consulting firm

to assist us. We asked a number of our church

members, teachers, and school parents to engage

and work hard toward finding a solution.

Most importantly though we asked for prayer …

and oh so many of you prayed. I am not sure

many of us knew what we were praying for. I know

we were praying for our school. I know we were

praying for growth and sustainability. We were

praying for each other, our staff, and God’s guid-

ance.

We were directed to make some out of the box

moves. We changed our tuition model to one not

built on discounts but one that was built on show-

ing the true value of a Christian education while

offering need where there was need.

We, in fact, increased our tuition when our enroll-

ment was declining, showing the true cost of the

education, but also going against conventional

economics of supply and demand pricing.

Together with the Grace of God, we can meet

the challenge which He has placed before us to

further His Mission here at Christ Lutheran

Church and School.

Registration numbers are continuing to in-

crease and we praise God for that answer to

prayer. Lots of hard work on the part of

many people went into making that happen.

Thanks be to God!

While regular classes take a break for sum-

mer vacation, Summer Camp begins June 6

Our feast days of the church year are done now

until the new year begins with Advent! This long

Pentecost season is called the Time of the

Church. We worship together with our brothers

and sisters in Christ in song and prayer. We re-

joice that we are the body of Christ! We were

joined to Jesus’ death and resurrection when we

received the Holy Spirit at our baptism. We con-

tinue to receive the blessings of the Holy Spirit in

His Word and Sacrament. We share the love of

Jesus with those around us in order to bring them

to know His love and peace. We want everyone to

know the power of God’s love that sent His only

Son to die for our sakes that we are forgiven of

all our sins, and because of His resurrection we

look forward to eternal life in heaven when our

time on this earth is done. Thanks be to God for

our church family at Christ Lutheran!

The choirs have taken a break for the summer. If

you have a musical gift you’d like to share in wor-

ship, let me know.

Now you are the body of Christ, and individual-ly members of it. 1 Corinthians 12:27 ESV

From [Christ] the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. Ephesians 4:16 ESV

June Activities – God Willing

Hire a 2nd new middle school teacher More Referrals and Leads Increased Enrollment Summer Marketing Plan implemented

A Final Thought: Last November we hired GraceWorks to help us grow our school. We began a very intense process of “change”. We changed our marketing, tuition structure, financial management process and website. We are making other changes. We are seeing the results. By God’s grace our enrollment has increased. Whoever said Lutherans won’t or can’t change doesn’t know us. God’s blessings on your month, Al Koschmann 271-1287 -- [email protected]

CHRIST CHRONICLE Page 7

At the same time we did not follow our consult-

ant’s recommendation of just marketing to Chris-

tians, as we believed (and believe) that not only is

our school a great academic school, but it is a mis-

sion field of our church in spreading the Good

News of Jesus Christ.

We did some crazy things. We worked hard at it,

but more importantly we prayed and I could not be

more optimistic in the results. Right now we are

already at enrollment levels that we were at with

the start of the school year.

We have another 10-12 students that have indi-

cated or we anticipate enrolling for next year. We

have another 13 new students that have ex-

pressed interest in our school and are now in the

decision making mode.

We should start the school year with a 15-20% in-

crease in enrollment while also increasing Pre-

school, Pre-K enrollment, and adding a 2 year old

program. This is all happening in an economy that

says it shouldn’t happen and more competition

than ever from charter schools and “free” educa-

tion.

How is this happening? There is no doubt in my

mind how it is happening. I believe it is our Prayer.

I believe it is truly seeking God’s Will. I believe

that it is The Holy Spirit at work. There simply is

God Cares About You A ministry of Christ Lutheran Church

Matthew 25:35-36: “For I was hungry and you gave me some-

thing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I

was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you

clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison

and you came to visit me.”

DEAR PARTNERS IN CHRIST: Some truly shocking reli-

gious facts are: 1.) There are nearly as many Lutherans

in Ethiopia as there are in the U.S; 2.) There are now

more Baptists in Nagaland (an eastern state in India)

than there are in the southern U.S. states. 3.) There

were more Christians worshipping last Sunday in China

than there were in the U.S. or in all of Europe.

So, what does this mean for us in the U.S.? It means

that in addition to witnessing to foreign countries, we also

must not forget about witnessing to our own neighbors.

Jesus’s second most important commandment was:

“Love your neighbor as yourself,” Matthew 22:39.

GCAY Mission is a neighborhood-based evangelism effort.

What exactly does this mission do? The evangelism mis-

sion partners walk up and down Central Ave. as well as

door to door in the neighborhood of Central Ave. and 126

Pennsylvania Ave. (The Mission’s headquarters), sharing

God’s Word. If you want to learn more about The Mission,

we’d love to have you visit us at 126 Pennsylvania Ave.,

one block north of Central Ave. Our schedule is handed

out to the public on flyers (as below):

Every Tuesday at 11:00 AM: Bible teaching, Back to

Work Program; giving out food & clothing.

Every 4th Wednesday of the month at 11:00 AM: Giving

out food from Roadrunner Food Bank to 180+ people.

Every Thursday at 11:30 AM: English class to Spanish

speakers; 12:30 PM: Two Bible study classes -one to Eng-

lish speakers and one to Spanish speakers; counselling;

serving a home-cooked meal; giving out food & clothing.

Last Thursday of the month at 2:15 PM: Holy Commun-

ion given by Pastor Neal Groeling.

Every 2nd and 4th Friday at 4:30 PM: Kid’s Bible Club;

Adult Bible Study; serving a home-cooked meal; giving

out food.

Thank you for your prayers, goods, volunteers, and

checks (payable to Christ Lutheran Church, 7701 Cande-

laria Rd., NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110, phone no: 505-

884-3876, with a notation for GCAY.) Twice this month,

volunteers’ Thrivent donations are helping GCAY. On

April 28th, a Thrivent donation of $250 enabled volun-

teers and staff to host a community barbeque, and a sec-

ond Thrivent donation of $250 (May 20th) will purchase

Biblical supplies for the Friday after school children’s min-

istry, organized and taught by long time Mission staff

member Genevieve; more info and photos of her inspira-

tional “Kid’s Bible Club” will be in June’s Newsletter. By

the way, if you need help in applying for a Thrivent Action

Team donation, please contact Christ Lutheran Church.

GCAY is flourishing because of the combined efforts of

volunteers and staff. *NEWSFLASH - This news just in:

On May 9th, the LCMS Rocky Mt. District Board of Direc-

tors approved a $9,800, “Gospel Gap Grant” for GCAY!

PRAYER: Dear God, please help us to fill in the “Gospel

gap” by remembering our own U.S. neighbors. These con-

cerns are as important as those of people in foreign mis-

sion lands. Help us to lovingly listen to our neighbor’s

voice, expressing his joys and sorrows, as Jesus’s voice

commanded us to do. In Jesus’s name, we pray, Amen.

CHRIST CHRONICLE Page 8

Why Attend Church – A Unique Perspective Rev. Peter Speckhard -- St. Paul – Munster, Indiana.

The New Testament tells Christians not to stop meeting together.

Apparently some of the earliest Christians had already begun

skipping regular worship under the mistaken impression that

“going to church” didn’t matter for them as long as they had faith.

But that misses most of the point about attendance. The key word

is “together,” which means that you not only benefit from the

presence of other people as you sing, pray, and hear the Word, but

your presence also benefits them.

So when you decide to skip church, you aren’t only deciding for

yourself that you can do without Word and Sacrament ministry and the mutual consolation of the brethren.

You’re also unilaterally declaring that everyone else can do just fine without you there. And you are wrong.

The indelible impression on young minds of seeing widows and newlyweds, trouble-makers and respectable

folk, black and white, rich and poor, young and old all singing and praying together can never happen if most

of those people don’t show up.

When you stay home because your toddler is such a hassle, you aren’t only making your morning more man-

ageable. You’re also declaring that the 90 year old who sometimes sits behind you shall not have your toddler

to smile at and thereby have his faith in the future of God’s promises reinforced.

When you as a twenty-something stay home from church because Sunday is the day you sleep in and you don’t

feel like you get much out of church anyway because you already learned it all in Sunday school, you’re not

only getting extra sleep for yourself. You’re also depriving some other twenty-something visitor who never

did learn it all in Sunday school and who is nervous and uncomfortable in church of the assurance your pres-

ence might have given that this strange place is a place for them, too.

When you as a middle-aged man skip church, you’re not only (mistakenly) reasoning that you have more im-

portant places to be, but you are robbing some fatherless teenage boy whose mom made him go to church that

morning of the example your presence in worship might have given.

When you stay home because you’re too embarrassed to use the wheelchair, you are robbing your church fami-

ly of the comfort of seeing that growing old gracefully is possible, and that should the day ever come from

them to be a wheelchair, their church would welcome them as it welcomes you.

No matter who you are or what your situation is, when it says in Hebrews not to stop meeting together, God

isn’t just telling you that you will be blessed if you go to church. He is telling you that you are a blessing to the

others there whether you know it or not. Don’t selfishly rob everyone else of the blessing God wants to give

them through your voice, your problems, your prayers, and your presence with them in worship.

This is FREE money and we only have 49 families supporting this program. We have over 300 members at

church and 150 families at the school, just think if everyone got on board to earn money for our different funds!

Or if even one-half (or 225 people) started earning 'FREE' money to support the Building Fund or the Playground

Fund. If you are buying gas, groceries, clothes, and eating out, just buy a gift card and use it instead of cash,

credit, or debit cards.

If you have questions on how the program works or how to make purchases on line, see Karen Kolke

or call her at 206-0906.

no other explanation that I see plausible.

Today if you ask me about our school I will tell you this from

the bottom of my heart:

Nine months ago there was a mindset of trying to do anything

possible to reverse the trend and make the school sustaina-

ble. Today I see and believe that The Holy Spirit has great

plans for our school as a mission field for many, many years to

come, baptizing and teaching

about our Lord and Savior

Jesus Christ while equipping

our children academically and

Spiritually to succeed in an

increasingly dysfunctional

world around us.

This is what I believe. Now I

ask you to keep praying!!!

God’s Peace,

Jerry

(Continued from page 7) Pres. Article China Bound

We are headed for China this sum-

mer to teach English. We need your

prayers. We will be teaching Chinese

English teachers and sharing our cul-

ture with them. If you would like to

June 5, 2016 – Luke 7:11-17

“Has God Visited You?” by Rev. Dr. Thomas R. Ahlersmeyer,

Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, IN

The reaction to Jesus when he brings back to life the son of

the widow of Nain is one of fear and adoration because God

has visited His people (Luke 7:16). We who have not seen

Jesus physically are blessed by the life-giving/reviving Word

that brings Him into our hearts and lives.

June 12, 2016 – 2 Samuel 11:26-12:10, 13-14

“Learn From David’s Life” by Rev. Dr. Walter A. Maier III, Con-

cordia Theological Seminary~Fort Wayne, IN

We learn from David’s life about temptation; sin; confession;

forgiveness; and the life of repentance, which could in part

involve discipline from the Lord. The fundamental truth is

God’s amazing grace and steadfast love.

June 19, 2016 – Luke 8:26-39

“Freedom Through Christ!” by Rev. James L. Elsner, Prince of

Peace Lutheran Church~Stroh, IN

Despite the truth and joy of God’s love in Jesus, it’s a dark

world we live in. Where can relief be found for struggles and

conflicts? Even for spiritual uncertainty? In Jesus.

June 26, 2016 – Galatians 5:1, 13-25

“Truly Free” by Rev. Paul E. Shoemaker, Emanuel Lutheran

Church~New Haven, IN

We live in the “land of the free and the home of the brave.”

True freedom is to be found in being a slave of Christ. This is

a great paradox. Some try to find freedom apart from Christ

and are enslaved to sin while others find true freedom in

Christ. The true land of the free is where Christ rules our

hearts.

We have made a reservation

again at Weck's on Osuna for

our June meeting---the last

for the summer.

We will meet at 12 noon on

Thursday, June 2nd.

We had 8 friendly ladies in May, but surely

have room and Bible Study books for more. Just a

reminder that you do NOT have to bring your Bible

as all the readings we need are in he booklet. We

will continue our short study of Ephesians after

lunch.

Call Eunice at 889-9705 or Marcia at 271-1287 if

you have questions or need a ride.
